Lessons Beyond Training

Summary:

Maybe it was the first time they fought side by side—Sukjoo couldn’t take his eyes off Ijin. His bated breaths of anticipation watching Ijin fight controlled and seamlessly arose new feelings in him. Jealousy became respect became…admiration? And now, Sukjoo can’t pinpoint the new feeling growing in his heart. What could get it to beat so fast?
Sukjoo wishes he didn’t realize his feelings. Ijin doesn’t want to realize his feelings.

Chapter Text

“Have you ever slept with someone before?”

“What?” Sukjoo asks, startled—his shirt pulled halfway over his head. Sukjoo couldn’t believe his ears. Him and Ijin had just finished training for the day, and as per usual, they were last in the locker room.

Ijin glances over at Sukjoo’s messy appearance, disinterested, before looking back to change himself, “We were talking about it at school today. I told them how busy I was in my hometown—too busy for even a girlfriend.”

“Oh…” Sukjoo pauses, responding honestly, “Well, no. Of course I haven’t either. You already know, I’ve spent all my time training as an aide and bodyguard to Yuna.”

“Right.” Ijin responds.

“-But, of course I’d want to. It’s normal to want to.” Sukjoo sighs, slipping on his shoes. “I can only imagine what those three said. But I’d probably agree with them. Don’t you want to?”

Ijin looks up pensively with knit eyebrows, as if Sukjoo asked a stupid question, before looking back down again–no response.

“...You don’t even want a girlfriend, man?” Sukjoo asks, glimpsing at Ijin to gauge his reaction. Ijin buttons up his shirt, leaving Sukjoo in suspenseful wake. Surely Ijin has thought about it before; how much more obvious could Yuna be in her crush? Damn . Ijin is really built. Way more built than him.

Ijin opens his mouth then purses his lips, reluctant to reply. His eyes skim past Sukjoo’s before returning to the weathered flooring. “I don’t know if I deserve to like someone.” Ijin admits. Oh. Sukjoo regrets pushing this subject, but Ijin’s eyes are far too deep, too dark to attribute it to a simple joke. Ijin was being honest—he was confiding in Sukjoo.

Sukjoo swallows, he doesn’t know how to navigate this situation. Yet, he feels a bit proud that he got Ijin of all people to confide in him. Sukjoo composes a small smile, patting Ijin on the shoulder, causing Ijin to slightly jump in surprise. Ijin turns his head and finally locks eyes with Sukjoo.

“We all do, no matter what we’ve done.” Sukjoo explains, “Well, not like we’d have the time to date with our bodyguarding work. Just find some release, yeah?” He pats Ijin one last time on his shoulder, continuing as he makes his way towards the exit. Sukjoo hopes his half-hearted words didn’t somehow hurt him.

As he walks, Sukjoo still feels Ijin’s intense gaze on the back of his neck. Looking back, Ijin’s crawling gaze finally meets Sukjoo’s eyes, his lips curling into a small smile. He gives a little nod, picking up his bag and heading to join Sukjoo at the door.

“Wanna go to the convenience store?”
