George is not expecting any visitors.
The clock has chimed well past midnight, and the quietness of his London flat has settled around him. He is cuddled on the sofa, wearing joggers and a hoodie, half-watching a repeat of the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix, the volume turned low, with his mug of lukewarm tea perched precariously on the armrest.
When the knock comes, urgent, uneven, his heart stutters.
He creeps barefoot to the door, frowning as he peers through the peephole.
Alex.
Soaked to the bone. Slouched shoulders, hoodie clinging to him by the continuous rain. His hair is wet and slicked back, and he looks like he is barely holding it together.
George opens the door in an instant.
First, Alex doesn't say anything, he just stands there as he blinks rain from his eyelashes. Red-rimmed, his eyes convey an aura of something broken in the way he carries himself.
"I didn't know where else to go," he finally admits. "She.. she cheated.".
George's chest tightens, the words cutting him more brutally than he anticipates. Not that he is surprised, he never did like her. There was something in the way she'd answer for Alex in interviews, or in the way she'd treat him like a trophy and not a person. But the real hurt is watching Alex stand in front of him, devastated, because there is nothing George despises more than to see his pain.
"Please, come in," he says softly, moving aside.
Alex hesitates for a moment, then nods and steps across the threshold. The door is closed by George, the sound of the rain now muted, yet still thundering.
He assists Alex in removing his saturated hoodie, draping it over a hook near the radiator, and silently hands him a towel. As their fingers touch each other, Alex looks down, blinks vigorously.
"I didn't want to believe it," Alex murmurs, clinging to the towel like a lifeline. "I mean, I guess I knew. Deep down. She's been cold for months. Distant. I was just. trying to make it work."
George leads him to the couch. "You don't have to talk about it right now."
"No, I, I have to," Alex says, his voice trembling. "I caught her. With someone else. I don't even know him. And she just looked at me like I was the one who'd done something wrong."
He pushed the heel of his hand against his eyes, as though he were struggling against tears. "I left. I got in the car and drove. I didn't know where to go, George. I didn't know who else to call."
"You don't have to explain," George whispers. "You're welcome here, always."
He hands Alex one of his own hoodies, enormous, fuzzy, and clean, while he goes get some tea. He vanishes into the kitchen, only to return in a moment with steaming mugs and softly says, "Chamomile. It calms the nerves."
Alex manages a weak smile, taking it with shaking hands.
The silence between them is comfortable in that heavy way grief often is. George doesn’t ask more questions. He doesn’t press. He just sits beside Alex and listens to the rain tapping softly against the windows.
Alex leans on him, a tentative move at first, but then more fully, his head on George's shoulder as it had been previously in Formula 2, when jet lag and night time racing had made the world feel mind-shatteringly loud. George automatically puts an arm around him.
"I hate that it hurts," Alex whispers. "I didn't even love her anymore. I think I just didn't want to be alone."
George doesn't say anything, he doesn't say Alex never has to be alone, especially when he’s around. Instead, he presses his cheek to Alex's head and shuts his eyes, maybe hoping his heartbeat can say what his words can't.
Finally, George helps him into the guest room, drawing the spare duvet gently up to his shoulders. He stands in the doorway a fraction longer than he needs to.
"Thanks," Alex speaks softly, as George switches off the light.
George nodded. "Anytime.".
He lies awake long after the apartment has quieted, staring up at the ceiling.
In the next room, Alex is sleeping at last.
But George is lying awake, his heart hurting in the silence. Because he's loved Alex for so long it's like breathing, and now Alex is here. Broken. Vulnerable. And so close.
But not his.
--
Alex does not leave after a day. Nor two. Not even a week.
The suitcase he had taken from his ex-girlfriend's home remained for months in George's spare bedroom, unopened. Initially, there was a subdued melancholy between them, Alex was guarded and polite, always thanking him, always tidying up after himself, and keeping the door shut when he slept. As though he did not want to impose.
George doesn’t push.
He continues to appear in the small but significant ways that truly count. Preparing tea as the night starts to draw in. Choosing takeout on those evenings when Alex is too exhausted to prepare dinner. Handing him a PlayStation controller, and they fall into their practiced routines, fingers brushing as they both reach for the same packet of crisps.
They don't talk about the breakup, anymore. But sometimes George will catch Alex staring into space for long minutes, eyes glazed. And sometimes George will come into the living room to find Alex curled up on the couch in one of George's hoodies, watching old races of the two of them in Formula 2.
"Do you miss it?" George asked, taking a seat beside him.
Alex smiled, though it was faint and distant. “I miss… being that happy.”
In his soft-spoken voice, George had answered, "You will be again."
They settle into an unspoken routine. Races come and go. They go, return, and fall into step like they're meant to walk together. Alex stops checking his phone every five minutes. He laughs more. Sleeps a little longer. Calls George's apartment "home" without even realising it.
Yet George still holds on to his secret like a bruise beneath his ribcage.
He keeps it hidden, tucked inside. His passion for Alex burns and engulfs him. It is seen in the manner in which he carefully recalls the shape of Alex's face. It's there in the fact that he never makes the effort to remind anyone that they have a connection beyond friendship. It's there every morning he wakes up and automatically makes two coffees rather than one.
It is in the pain of not being able to reach out to Alex in the manner that he wants.
George would have continued to keep it all concealed, his silent grief, the endless hoping, if it hadn't been for Lando.
A rainy weekend envelops Silverstone when it finally spills out.
George is sitting in the McLaren motorhome with Lando, both of them with energy drinks and watching the rain lash against the paddock windows. Alex is conducting media, and George's frequent time-checking starts.
"You've been weird lately," Lando says, offhandedly. "Like, weirder than normal."
George exhales. "Thanks, mate."
"I'm not kidding. You're unsettled. And don't try to say it's just the weather."
George falls silent for a beat too long, and Lando's eyebrow goes up. "Is this about Alex?"
That name cuts through George's composure. "It's nothing.".
Lando cocks his head, his perceptive gaze unyielding. "Let me get this straight: Alex moved in with you after his messy breakup, he's been living with you for months, and the way you both look at each other is like you've patented the concept of longing. But you say it's 'nothing'?"
George slumps forward, his elbows on knees, gazing at the floor. "A year, Lando. A whole year of seeing him drift off on my couch. Seeing him smile again. Seeing him get better. And all I've done is… remain silent."
Lando's frown is gentler now. "Why?"
"Because he was hurting," George echoes, his voice tight with emotion. "Because I didn't wish to be selfish. I didn't want to be the rebound or have him feel owed me. I wanted to be the one he could lean on, not the one who made him hurt more."
Lando reclines, his voice steady. “You’re not selfish for loving him.”
George turns in surprise.
"You've always loved him, haven't you?" Lando asks, his voice gentle this time.
George says nothing, his answer not needed.
Lando offers a calming, knowing smile. "Perhaps it's time you told him that."
But George merely shakes his head. "If he ever feels the same… he'll come to me."
And Lando waits. Perhaps he knows that sometimes love requires waiting, even if it pains.

It begins on a Sunday night, deep into the season. The evenings are cool, and the days are slowly getting shorter.
George is barefoot and sleep-eyed in the kitchen, making tea after an overnight flight from Japan. He is a little jet-lagged still, his hair messy and his hoodie draped casually over him. Soft music hums in the background, an old Arctic Monkeys playlist that Alex had left on the speaker.
Alex follows closely behind him.
He just stands there at first, not saying anything, just standing, propped against the doorframe in one of George's sweaters, looking at him.
George does not notice until he returns with two mugs in his hand and nearly drops one at the look on Alex's face.
"What?" George says, smiling involuntarily. "Do I have toothpaste on me or something?"
Alex doesn’t smile back.
He takes a step forward instead.
And then another.
"Alex?" George says again, less sure.
"I've been trying to pinpoint the moment it happened," Alex whispers, his gaze locked on George as if he were the only object in the room. "When I began to look at you and see.. well everything."
George gulps, his heart in his throat. "You—what are you saying?"
Alex reaches out and takes the mug out of George's hand, placing it gently on the counter between them. Then, with deliberate caution, he cups George's jaw in one hand, gentle, as if he were holding something breakable and irreplaceable.
"I believe I was in love with you before I knew what that truly was," Alex confesses. "But, in being so focused on the notion of what I thought I wanted, who I thought I needed to be."
George is motionless, barely breathing.
"I never intended to fall for you like this," Alex whispers. "But here I am. I have."
George's voice trembles as he speaks. "Alex—"
But he doesn't get to complete the sentence, since Alex leans in and kisses him.
It's slow. Tentative. The type of kiss that shakes with months of tension finally breaking. George melts into it, his hands clenching on Alex's shirt as if he's worried this is all just a dream.
It's real.
It's everything he's been waiting for.
When they separate, foreheads still touching, George laughs, soft and winded.
"I've loved you since we were kids," he says to her, his voice filled with disbelief. "I would imagine this moment, but I never thought that it would ever really be here."
Alex grins, face flushed. "Guess we're both better at secrets than we thought."
There is a long pause before George ventures, "What happens now?"
Alex grasped George's hand, intertwining their fingers. "Now? You're taking me on a real date."
George grins. "Yeah?"
"Mmm," Alex whispers quietly. "Somewhere peaceful. Just you, me, and maybe a bottle of champagne."
George leaned in again for a kiss. "You're not getting rid of me now, you know."
Alex drew him nearer. "I never wanted to."
--
It has been almost a year now since that evening in George's kitchen.
A year of late-night takeout, soft kisses exchanged behind motorhomes, late-night FaceTimes, and slow, tender intertwining of their worlds. They've not issued any public statements, per se. Only their closest friends know, Lando, Logan, and even Charles has shared a sly wink or two with Alex, but to the rest of the world, they're just George Russell and Alex Albon. Old teammates, but lifelong friends.
Until now.
Until the day Alex finally takes the leap.
It's Spa, and it's raining, of course it is, but somehow, someway, Alex puts in the drive of his life. Aggressive strategy, calm execution, a thrilling final-lap defence. Third place. His first podium since Red Bull, but this time it feels like more.
This time, he's not asking who's watching or whether he'll be dropped.
This time, he is well aware of who awaits him at the stairs' bottom.
He climbs the podium, soaked to the bone, with champagne already fizzing in his hands. Out of sight just a little way back from the FIA crew, George is standing hiding behind it, a Mercedes lanyard around his neck, grinning so hard it hurts.
Alex's eyes snap to him immediately.
Later, after the anthem, the champagne, and the hats of ceremony, Alex stands in front of a line of microphones, prepared for the post-race interviews.
He's electric, his skin wet with rain and perspiration, his hair a messy knot under his cap. The reporter asks the usual questions, about the tires, the strategy, and what it's like to be back in the limelight.
And then she says, "Anyone you'd like to dedicate this to?"
Alex’s smile softens.
"Yeah," he responds, his voice steadier than it has any right to be. "This one's for someone who's stood by me through it all, all the hard races, all the good races… and the heartbreaks in between."
He pauses and breathes. Does not look at the PR men, does not glance over his shoulder.
"Honestly, he's over there," Alex goes on, waving to the paddock rim, where George now stands statue-still, his eyes enormous.
"George Russell. My boyfriend."
There’s a beat of stunned silence. Then the room erupts, shouts from the journalists, a few camera flashes, someone gasping loudly in the back.
George's jaw drops, but he does not look embarrassed. He appears as if he would cry.
"I just wanted to thank you," Alex goes on, his voice now soft, but the mic still capturing each word.
"For believing in me when I couldn't believe in me. For loving me even in those moments when I was too afraid to love back."
And, with a wry smile, he said, "You also owe me dinner."
The clip goes viral in seconds.
The viral photo is taken just minutes later, George sprinting across the media barrier to envelop Alex in a massive hug, foreheads pressed together, both laughing like idiots.
Someone even manages to get the shot when George kisses Alex on the cheek before whispering something that makes Alex's ears turn bright pink.
The headline on George's Instagram later in the day is simple.
