“How bizarre it is at all but… I want you to have this,” her Mother said to Miyu and she offered the most unbelievable token of forgiveness, “for your upcoming engagement to Aoi.”
Miyu could believe neither her ears nor eyes.
“I mean it.” her Mother insisted. “I want you to have it because Aoi has always made you so happy, so strong. You have my blessing, Miyu, I want you to give this to Aoi when you propose to her.”
The ring in her mother’s fingers had always been so untouchable since the incident, so sleek with guilt but now, Miyu saw it anew. Shiny silver without flaw, a priceless orb of emerald flanked by diamonds. She accepted it, with tears in her eyes. She closed the ring against the palm of her hand. It would be perfect for an engagement.
“Thank you… Thank you, Mother.” Miyu sputtered through her grateful tears.
Her Mother beckoned her closer and they hugged tightly, and Miyu was so glad, so relieved. Aoi had been such a taboo topic since the Incident but everything was true. Aoi had always been the strength that Miyu had drawn upon in her darkest time: even though they had been separated by fate.
It was crazy. Miyu hadn’t even said a word to her Mother or to Aoi but it was something she was thinking about. She and Aoi had been together again for so long and Miyu didn’t want Aoi to slip through her fingers again.
