Chapter Text
The elevator doors hissed open, revealing a figure drangend in crimson. Not the bold, flashy red of Tony Stark’s armor, nor the patriotic red woven into Steve Rogers’ uniform, but something subtler.
Daredevil stepped into the Avengers Tower briefing room without fanfare, his gait smooth, assured. No hesitation in his steps. No flourish or dramatic entrance. Just the precise confidence of someone who had been invited and didn’t care if you forgot.
Tony Stark looked up from his digital display. “Huh,” he muttered, nudging Steve with an elbow. “He actually came. I owe Bruce twenty bucks.”
From the corner, Clint gave a two-fingered salute and signed something with a lazy grin. Tony signed back, mostly understandable if a bit messy.
Daredevil didn’t react.
Clint tilted his head slightly.
Natasha Romanoff was the one who finally spoke. “Thanks for coming. This is more of a strategic consultation than a formal invite, but Stark insisted.”
Tony swiveled toward them. “There’s a new gang running smuggling routes through the old sewer grids under Harlem. You know the area, you know the layout. Figured we could use a little Devil’s insight.”
Daredevil inclined his head politely. “Glad to help. Though I’d prefer to skip the PR teams.”
“You and me both,” Bruce muttered from the corner, not looking up from his notes.
Steve stepped forward, clipboard in hand. “Daredevil, this is a full Avengers briefing. Mission prep, live deployment, and debrief protocols are in effect. I’m assuming you’re okay with that?”
“Sure,” Daredevil said. “I’ve read your field structure. It’s not... unfamiliar.”
He turned toward Clint, who had just signed again, something simple, like "What's your plan?"
Still, Daredevil gave no response.
Clint’s hand dropped slightly. His brow furrowed, just a bit. His mouth twitched in a confused frown.
Natasha narrowed her eyes.
Steve cleared his throat. “Clint asked—”
“I heard him,” Daredevil said evenly, voice pleasant. “I was about to answer.”
Tony's eyebrow twitched. “Wait, so… you saw him signing?”
Daredevil paused for the briefest second, then said, “I knew what he asked.”
Bruce glanced up. “So you do read ASL?”
Daredevil turned toward him. “No. But I’ve gotten good at educated guesses.”
An uncomfortable silence lapsed. Clint looked like someone had just handed him a shoe and told him it was cake.
Tony broke it with a cough. “So... you don’t sign?”
“I haven’t learned it. Yet,” Daredevil replied. “I haven’t had many teammates who use it.”
Clint's jaw tightened, just a bit. Natasha, still watching quietly, noticed.
Steve, ever the diplomat, shifted forward. “It’s not a huge deal, but… Clint prefers when people try.”
“Got it,” Daredevil said. “Noted.”
He offered nothing else.
The silence stretched again, awkward and humming with unspoken tension.
Natasha caught it first, the way his face tilted minutely toward each speaker when they moved, how his body subtly angled toward the hum of the air vent, the way his head twitched half a second before someone entered the room.
He was tracking the room. With sound. Not eyes.
But no one else noticed.
“Well,” Tony said brightly, clapping his hands. “Now that we’ve addressed the unspoken, let’s jump into criminal logistics and sewer plans. Very sexy.”
Daredevil didn’t smile. But he also didn’t explain himself.
Natasha stared at him, quiet realization beginning to dawn in her eyes.
