When Haymitch sees Lenore Dove after coming back from winning The Hunger Games, he sees nothing but freedom. He knows deep down that he should run. That if they could kill Ma and Sid with the instant of a fire, Lenore Dove is no luckier. They would come for her. They would find her so long as she still loves Haymitch. So long as the Capitol still knows about them. He should run. Leave Lenore Dove and head for the woods. Not let Snow take more than he already has. But he can't help it. Lenore Dove is his girl. He loves her, and a few stolen moments, a few stolen kisses, before his departure can't hurt anyone, right? Until It does.
OR: Haymitch has the gumballs before Lenore Dove, and Lenore Dove is so lost in talking to him and admiring her boy after all this time that she forgets to have any. Basically, if Haymitch died instead of Lenore Dove, also, pretend Snow didn't feed Haymitch bread and milk for weeks before this, and he can't throw it up.
