The Computer has an Existential Crisis

Summary:

Mac has a bit of an existental crisis after the human leaves (Day 3 of the Mac Love Path), and their ex, Existental Dread (Doug) comes to check on them.

Work Text:

Mac watched the human go and felt their chest tighten as they shut the door behind them. They immediately put their face in their hands.

“Oh… I mucked it up so bad, didn’t I?” They groaned, “I upset them, I-”

“Mac, you don’t look good having an existential crisis,” Doug was there, leaning against the wall, arms crossed and looking aggravatingly hot, as usual.

“Doug, now’s not the-”

“Mac.” Doug said again. The computer deflated a little. Doug walked over and leaned against the desk, forcing the computer to look at him. “Quit lying to yourself. You didn’t upset them one bit. They love interfacing with you. You, Mac.”

“... Doug…”

“But telling them to see other objects? Yeah, that was stupid, but even smart people do stupid things, right? I mean, you did me.”

“Doug, I don’t want to talk about it!” Mac snapped. Doug sighed, shaking his head.

“Yeah, you’re right. I can’t tell you the right shit to make you feel better. I’m trying, though, Mac.”

“Doug-”

“I’m not mad at you for breaking up with me.”

Mac paused, hands dropping to their lap and gripping their jeans to calm themself. They stared at their feet, trying to keep themself from crying.

You should be.”

“Well I’m not. So too fucking bad. You were scared for the human. I get it. Was kinda clever to log them out of their Twitter and corrupt the file that had their Twitter password in it.”

Mac smiled shakily.

Doug continued, “and doing that to their Facebook account, too. That was smart. You’re smart.”

Shut up.”

“Make me, Mackey.”

Mac reached out and wrapped their arms around Doug’s waist and pulled them up to hug him. Doug quickly hugged back, one arm holding Mac’s lower back and the other cradling the back of their head. He ran his fingers through their hair a little.

“I forgot how strong your arms are.” Doug remarked.

“Well, yeah, they kinda have to be, given the fact that my legs are almost useless,” Mac giggled.

Doug sighed.

“I missed this.”

“Me?”

“Yeah, and holding you, too.”

Mac buried their face in Doug’s chest, “Liar.”

“Dork.”

Mac laughed, “I missed you calling me that.”

Doug smiled and kissed their forehead, “You were right earlier, though. That new upgrade the human gave you does make you sexy.”

“Doug!!!” Mac whined, headbutting him in the chest. Doug laughed again.

“What? Am I wrong?”

“Well, no, but still!”

Doug sighed and lowered Mac back into their wheelchair.

“I oughta get out of your dorky hair, though,” Doug smiled, “See you around?”

Please.” Mac responded. Doug leaned down and kissed them. It was a quick, chaste kiss, but to Mac, it felt amazing.

“... bye,” Doug said, heading for the door. Mac hadn’t noticed before, but Dorian was there. He looked mildly annoyed.

“Was Dorian here the whole time?” Mac blinked.

“He’s a door, of course he was!” Doug called back. Mac groaned and buried their face in their hands again.

Maybe I’ll have to have an existential crisis more often, huh? They thought.
