Summary
A muffled moan made its way past the ringing in Babe’s ears. He froze. Moving his arms away from the sides of his head, he stopped breathing to make sure he hadn’t misheard.
Another grunt and sharp gasp affirmed he hadn’t just imagined anything. His head throbbed with how hard his heart was slamming in his chest with a strength that threatened to crack ribs. Trembling hands lifted up to grip the edge of the foxhole. Using the leverage to pull himself up just high enough to see the snow covered forest floor.
“Please no please no please no please please no no no no,” came a whispered litany of begging prayers to anyone who was still listening to him. He almost choked on his own heart flying up into his throat at what was just a few yards from his foxhole.
