Work Text:
Dana had a feeling that the new man Heather was seeing was, in fact, Robby. Heather would not confirm nor deny. But, Dana saw it in the way they looked at each other. They had always been painfully obvious about the fact that there had once been something between them. Robby had a tendency to watch Heather longingly, whether it be charting at the hub or in the middle of examining a patient. He was quite pathetic, if you asked Dana. Heather, in contrast, seemed determined to act like all was fine.
"Why not now?" Dana would ask Heather, one day, at the topic of her and Robby's previous relationship.
Heather pursed her lips. "I don't feel like he's changed." She shook her head. Opened her mouth to say something, but never did. Dana changed the topic.
The past months since the Pittfest MCI, Dana learned that Robby had actually begun seeing Abbot's therapist. Saw that he was doing better, even. She commended him for taking a hobby outside of work when he first came in with a motorcycle helmet and explained why. She hadn't actually seen him so steady in years. Maybe ever.
Dana saw that Heather noticed this too. There was a subtle shift in the way they interacted with one another. Heather cautiously took down walls she had put around herself when it came to Robby. She would let him reach out to her, and she would start reaching back. Dana noticed that, especially recently, Heather was in a better mood. It was possible to chalk it up to her residency soon coming to an end and officially taking up the title of an attending physician at PTMC, but there seemed to be more to it. Dana wouldn't continue prodding if Heather didn't want to talk just yet. But, she glowed with Robby. They were so, painfully obvious.
It was a day that Heather was working the night shift that the confirmation of their relationship came. Dana had come in a tad early, as always, to work on confirming and transferring information from the night to day shift. Heather looked about ready to pass out at her work station. Dana decided she would deal with dragging her out later, if Heather hadn't already wrapped up herself. Robby beat her to the punch.
Robby gave Dana and Lena a pleasant but brisk hello as he made a bee-line for Heather. Dana and Lena continued working, but both were the same type of quiet and nosy. They slowed a bit and attempted to subtly watch the interaction. Robby coaxed Heather out of her work station and led her to the locker room. The lockers were partially visble from the hub, so Dana and Lena could full well see when Heather leaned up on her tip-toes to kiss Robby. They saw that it wasn't a surprise. Robby leaned into her comfortably. It was painfully domestic.
Dana had to avert her eyes, feeling like she was intruding on a private moment. She was grinning, though, when she caught Lena's approving nod. "Proud of 'em." Lena stated with finality, going back to work.
"Yeah. Finally." Dana agreed, buzzing with happiness for the both of them. And, perhaps, for herself not having to deal with as pathetic a Robby.
