Work Text:

"Ugh, when is it my turn?" You sigh dramatically at the couple slow dancing across your computer screen. Being a hunter already sucked, but being a hunter and a hopeless romantic was even worse.
The job left no room for romance, no time to meet people. Sure you lived with two guys, but neither one of them was an option. Dean was... Well, Dean. You just never saw him that way. He was more like an older brother. And maybe you used to have a little crush on Sam, but that was in the past.

You'd tried making your move, and he always seemed to reject your advances. Like the time you told him he looked really good in his fake FBI getup, even daring to brush your hand over his arm, and all he did was reply with a polite smile and a 'thanks' before stepping out of the room. "I'm tellin ya, sweetheart. Sam's a smart one, but he's clueless when it comes to girls," Dean had told you, "Don't take it personally. He just has no idea you're hittin on him." He gave you a pitiful pat on the back before following his brother outside.

Maybe it was the lingering sting of rejection, or maybe you were scared of ruining your friendship, but you stopped trying after that. He isn't interested, and you need to get over it, you told yourself.

But your constant proximity to the guy was not helping. Whether the two of you were huddled into a salt circle or laughing over drinks while Dean flirted across the bar, you couldn't help but feel drawn to him. Especially now, as he sat next to you on your motel bed, Dean fast asleep in the other room. You watched the way the computer screen illuminated his face, highlighting his lips so perfectly as he spoke.

"Really? You wanna do this kind of stuff?"

"Um, of course. This is like- peak romance." You gesture to the pair on screen. The guy held the woman by her waist, twirling her through the rain. She looped her arms around his neck, kissing him sweetly as the movie's soundtrack crescendoed.

"Isn't it kind of...cheesy?" He leans back onto the pillows, resting his head on his palm. The two of you already struggled to fit into the small bed, Sam's tall frame taking up most of the space, and he only seemed to get impossibly closer every time he moved. Not that you minded.

"Definitely, but I dunno." You shrug. "I think doing corny stuff can be nice when you're with the right person." At least, that's how you always imagined it would be. You hadn't dated much, and the relationships you had been in weren't exactly dreamy like the movies.

"The right person, huh?"

He smiles that pretty smile of his, and the softness in his eyes is enough to make you melt. "Yeah," you agree, voice barely above a whisper.

The man on screen continues his melodramatic love confession, pulling your attention back to your laptop. The dim lighting of the motel room slowly lulls you to sleep, and eventually you're fighting to keep your eyes open. Having Sam next to you, sitting under the same blanket, that look in his eyes— it was all so nice. Your vision starts to blur, head falling to the side until it lands on something solid, but comfortable. You felt so warm, so safe. But you didn't want to fall asleep yet. You wanted to stay in that moment, forever if you could. Just wait until the end of the movie, you tell yourself...

You wake to a tap on your shoulder, Sam's voice gently rousing you from your slumber. "Hey, sleepyhead." Your eyes flutter open as you take in your surroundings. Right, you were watching a movie together...Had it ended? What was he still doing here? "Man, you must have been exhausted. You were out like a light."

Oh. Oh no.

You had totally fallen asleep. On Sam's shoulder.

"Sorry, I didn't realize—" You frantically pull away from him, cheeks burning. God, how long had you been out?

"It's fine," he cuts you off. He seemed so relaxed, as if you passing out on top of him was the most normal thing in the world. "Why didn't you just wake me up?"

He shrugs. "You needed the rest."

Running a hand over your face, you rub the sleep from your eyes. Oh Sam. Sweet, attentive, Sam. Why did he have to be so nice to you all the time?

"Look," he says, "it's raining." You follow his gaze to the window and squint, just barely able to make out the lines of rain pouring onto the motel parking lot. You heard it now too, the faint pitter-patter as the droplets danced across the roof.

"What, you think it's an omen or something?" You sigh. "Damn, I thought we were done with this town..." Curse Sam and his brain, always picking up on the things you missed.

He laughs. "No, just- come on." He takes your hand in his own, and even though you have no idea what's going on and you definitely do not want to work right now, you let him pull you out of bed. He probably could've taken you anywhere as long as he kept holding your hand.

"Shouldn't we get Dean?" you question as he hurries you down the hall.

"No. I told you," — He smiles, shaking his head like you were the one acting weird — "this isn't about the case."

He leads you outside, the cool night air threatening to swallow you whole if it weren't for the warmth of his hand around yours. You draw the line at following him blindly into the rain, planting your feet firmly under the porch awning. "What are we doing out here?"

He smiles.

"We're going to dance in the rain."

He says it like it's the most natural course of action- like those weren't the most romantic words anyone had ever said to you.

"You're kidding."

He shrugs, nervously running a hand over the back of his neck. "I acknowledge I'm no romcom star, but I like to think I've got a few good moves." He shimmies his shoulders with an awkward flair, and your lips quirk into a smile.

"I'm really sorry to be the one to tell you this Sam, but you have no good moves."

"Why don't you teach me some then?" He grins, stepping off the porch and into the rain.

How could you say no to those puppy dog eyes?

Squealing as the rain nips at your skin, you throw your hands up in the air and follow him down the porch steps. A single street lamp illuminates the parking lot, and maybe two cars were there besides the Impala.

You turn to Sam, a smirk playing at the corner of your lips. "Alright, you want me to school you? C'mere."

He steps closer, allowing you to loop an arm around his neck. "And then you do this..." Tentatively, you guide his hands to your waist before interlocking your fingers behind his head. You step to the right. Then the left.

"There we go," he says, looking down at you with a playful grin. You smile back. "There we go."

The two of you keep a steady rhythm as you step through the parking lot. Right, left, turn. Right, left, turn. The rain sticks your hair to the back of your neck and soaks through your t-shirt, but you don't care. You just keep stepping. Right, left, turn. Right, left-

"Alright, that's enough of that." He stops suddenly, and you frown. He wanted to go inside already? You should've known it was too good to be true. His hands slip from your waist, one moving up your back and the other sliding down your legs. "What are you—?" But before you can get out another word, he scoops you up into his arms bridal style.

"Sam!" you shriek over the rain, and he laughs. "Relax, I'm just speeding things up a little." He lightly tosses you into the air, drawing another yelp from your lips. "Oh my god, I swear if you drop me and I split my head open on the pavement, I’ll- well, I won’t do anything ‘cause I’ll be dead," you dramatize, clinging to his chest like your life depended on it.

He shakes his head. "I would never drop you."

And you're not sure if it's the soft reassurence in his voice, or maybe the way he cradled you in his arms so easily, but you relax against him. He takes that as an invitation to start spinning you through the parking lot, and you throw your head back, enjoying the cool air as it hits your face. A giggle escapes your lips. Then another one. And before you know it you're laughing like an idiot, and so is he. Smiling through your delirium, you can't help but wonder if you were really still asleep, alone in your motel room. The whole thing felt like a dream.

Eventually your cheeks start to hurt from all the smiling, and — as strong as he was — Sam's biceps get tired. He carefully lowers you onto the pavement, and you immediately miss the feeling of his arms around your body. "You're right, you know," he says.

You cock your head to side, the exhilaration of the moment still wearing off. "About what?"

He takes a step closer and slips a hand around your waist. Not hesitant. Not rushed. But sure. Like he knew exactly what he wanted to do from the minute you followed him outside- he had just been waiting. Because he wanted to give you everything you wanted first.

"With the right person, the corny stuff is nice," he breathes, tucking a loose strand of hair behind your ear.

"And for me, that person is you."

Without another word, he leans in and kisses you slow, deep. He tastes like rain and pent up emotions and everything you've ever wanted in a man, and you practically melt at the feeling of his lips on yours. After what felt like — well you weren't exactly sure how long, but it definitely hadn't been long enough — he breaks the kiss, cradling the better half of your face with one hand.

"So," he says, voice barely above a whisper, "was that as good as it looks in the movies?"

You shake your head, a soft smile tugging at the corners of your lips.

"No." He presses his forehead against yours, and you plant another tender kiss to his mouth- a silent thank you for the most romantic night of your life. "Better."

Notes:

I lovee the idea of dancing in the rain and I rly hope I did it justice. Also I didn’t write it in, but I can just picture Dean waking up to you guys screaming and watching from the window like “I freakin knew this would happen” lol
