Work Text:

Apollo let out a long sigh. He'd been discussing his current case with Mr. Wright for the past hour, or at least trying to. His boss kept getting sidetracked with one thing or another and it was starting to get on his nerves. They were sitting opposite from each other on the two couches in the office, Apollo sitting normally while Mr. Wright was sprawled out on his couch.

"Can we get back on track, please?" Apollo dropped the case file on the table in front of him with a huff. "I would like to leave and get home at a somewhat reasonable time."

Mr. Wright snorted and pushed his beanie out of his eyes. "Yeah, I'm sure your cat would appreciate it." He idly scratched at his stubbly cheek. "I guess I do keep getting off track though, huh? Sorry. Gotta love ADHD."

Apollo glared at him, which only made him chuckle. The two thankfully got back on subject, in fact they were so deep in conversation Apollo barely noticed when the door opened behind him. He caught burgundy out the corner of his eye but didn't bother to look over. Mr Wright, however, glanced over and smiled at the newcomer.

"Hey, you. What's a pretty guy like you doing in a place like this?"

What? Apollo blinked and finally looked over. Standing next to the couch he was sitting on was a very tired, very annoyed looking Prosecutor Edgeworth. Apollo suddenly sat up straighter.

"M-Mr. Edgeworth! I didn't hear you come in. Um, hiya!"

The prosecutor responded with a quiet "hmph" before he wandered behind the desk in the corner. Mr. Wright chuckled.

"Don't take it personally, that's his way of saying hello. At least after a long day of dealing with dumbasses at work."

How would he know that? Apollo thought. He narrowed his eyes at Mr. Wright before shaking his head. They continued their discussion, though Mr. Wright was a bit distracted by the sounds of drawers opening and closing. Apollo cleared his throat, which made his boss look up at him.

"Huh? Oh, sorry. Hang on." He turned around to look at Mr. Edgeworth, who seemed to be looking for something behind the desk. "Tea's in the bottom drawer on the left, Miles. I even got you the fancy shit in a tin box."

It took Apollo a second to realize who Mr. Wright was calling Miles. Mostly because he didn't really know Mr. Edgeworth's first name. Since when are they on a first name basis with each other? Sure, they've been friends for years, everyone knew that. But as far as Apollo knew they never called each other anything but their surnames. Weird.

Apollo watched Mr. Edgeworth work the electric kettle for a moment before he went back to talking about the case. Though at that point he was beginning to suspect the conversation was a lost cause. The suspicion was only confirmed by Mr Edgeworth walking behind the couch Mr. Wright was sitting on and settling a hand on his shoulder. Mr. Wright smiled and set his hand on top of Mr. Edgeworth's.

"Hey. Tired?"

Mr. Edgeworth nodded with a sigh. "There is a lot on my plate right now, and a lot of people who need me to do a lot of things very urgently."

Mr. Wright gave him a sympathetic look. "Aw, I'm sorry. But hey, at least once this is over you'll be promoted, yeah? That's pretty exciting."

If Mr. Edgeworth was excited, Apollo couldn't tell. Then again, he wasn't entirely sure Mr. Edgeworth was capable of any other emotion other than annoyance. "Yes, I suppose it is. But I fear it will increase my workflow as well. Not to mention, it will pull me away from the courtroom."

"Well, yeah. I know that's a big deal for you." Mr. Wright turned around fully so he could face Mr. Edgeworth better. "But look on the bright side, you're gonna be guiding a new generation of prosecutors out of the dark ages. That's nothing to sneeze at, Miles."

A smile crossed Mr. Edgeworth's face. Apollo couldn't remember ever seeing him smile before. He found it off-putting. "I never really considered that before. Yes, you're right, Phoenix."

"Well, duh." A smirk crossed Mr. Wright's face. "I'm always-"

He was cut off by both Apollo and Mr. Edgeworth groaning loud enough to drown him out.

"Give it a rest, boss. That joke stopped being funny months ago."

"Years, even. I vaguely recall he used to make that terrible joke in school."

The kettle went off by then. Mr. Edgeworth walked over to prepare his tea while Mr. Wright pouted.

"You both suck, you know that?"

Apollo snorted softly. "And yet somehow you still keep me around."

"Well, yeah. You looked too much like a kicked puppy for me not to."

Mr. Edgeworth snickered from the other side of the room. Since when does that guy laugh outside of a smug chuckle in court?

Apollo watched Mr. Edgeworth bring his tea over to the couch Mr. Wright was sitting on. He set the tea down on the table before taking Mr. Wright's hand.

"Darling." What the fuck? "I really have had a long day. Would you terribly mind if I. . . ?" Mr. Edgeworth trailed off. He ran his thumb over Mr. Wright's hand nervously.

"Yeah? Here?" Mr. Wright gave Mr. Edgeworth a reassuring smile. "I don't mind if you don't."

Dread filled Apollo's gut. What could they possibly be talking about? Should he leave? Did they even remember he was there? He was about to collect his things before he watched Mr. Wright lay back down on the couch. Apollo barely had time to scoop up the case file before Mr. Edgeworth climbed on top of Mr. Wright and plopped down on top of him with a content sigh. Then he tucked his face into the side of Mr. Wright's neck.

Oh.

Really? Right now? In front of my case file?

His annoyance must have been clear on his face because when Mr. Wright glanced over at him he burst out laughing. Which earned him an annoyed grumble from the man using him as a body pillow.

"Sorry, Apollo. Should've warned you that Miles is kind of a cuddler. Especially when he's tired."

Apollo pinched the bride of his nose. "That's. . . not even the part that's bugging me here. Why is he even laying on you to begin with? Aren't you two, like, rivals or something?"

"Oh, yeah we totally are." Mr. Wright settled his hand in Mr. Edgeworth's hair. "We're also dating."

Mr. Wright said it so casually, as if that wasn't the biggest piece of Boss Lore Apollo had ever heard. It took him several seconds to process what he'd said before he finally responded.

"You- huh?? SINCE WHEN?!"

Mr. Edgeworth let out a groan that was muffled by Mr. Wright's hoodie. He sat up to glare at Apollo, which sent a chill down his spine. Jeez, remind me to never stand across the courtroom from that guy.

"Why must you be so loud? You are going to give me a headache."

Apollo chuckled nervously. He reached up and rubbed his head, squishing his spikes in the process. "A-Ah, sorry Mr. Edgeworth. I'll try to be quiet."

Mr. Edgeworth huffed before laying back down. Mr. Wright chuckled softly.

"Easier said than done with him. But to answer your question, I'd say, oh. . . two months?"

"Three."

"Three months, yeah. After I got the jurist system figured out we decided, what the hell? We're not getting any younger, and we've kinda been circling each other for years. Why not make it official? Miles wanted to keep it under wraps but we're finally at a point where we wanna be a bit more. . . I dunno, public I guess?"

Mr. Edgeworth sat up a little to speak. "I was worried it would impact my work, or Phoenix's ability to get his badge back. But now that my promotion is a bit more set in stone, I don't have much to worry about now."

Apollo was quiet for a bit to process the information. He cleared his throat softly before speaking. "So, why me? Why am I the first to know? Well, aside from Trucy I'm assuming."

Mr. Edgeworth shrugged. "You were here. I thought you would be out of the office by now. But I considered it when I saw you and thought you wouldn't raise much of a fuss about it."

Well, he did have a point there. Apollo nodded, then finished gathering his things.

"I'm, um, honored. I think. I'll, uh, I'll leave you two be. I think I have what I need for my case, anyway."

He stood up and grabbed his bag. Mr. Wright waved at him.

"Alright. Glad I could help. Well, help as best I could, anyway."

"Stay safe, Mr. Justice."

Apollo reluctantly waved back. He turned and left the office, but not before catching Mr. Edgeworth beginning to curl up on top of Mr. Wright.

He really does have a weird job.
