When we’re finished saying nothing…

Summary:

When a misplaced object finally leads to something else than a fight.

Notes:

First fic ever published and this is intimidating. Be gentle with her, please.

Based on this prompt:
“Can we agree a whispered “fuck it” right before a kiss is superior?
Enemies in the middle of a confrontation?”

Thank you A for pushing me to write this, reading it and then convincing me to post!

Work Text:

It’s not even 7am and Harry is already annoyed at Louis. The guy is not up yet and Harry is cross at him. That’s a real talent!

There’s a very clear rule in the flat since he‘s had roommates: objects used by everyone need to be placed back where they belong. His flatmates usually didn’t need reminders. They just managed to follow this rule. All of them, except Louis, his newish flatmate. When they met, Louis seemed to be a nice guy, organized and tidy. And Harry was quite charmed in general. But after 3 months of sharing a flat, his roommate still misplaces things daily, despite Harry’s reminders. Worse. He’s not assigning a permanent new place to the items. He changes their place nearly every time, as though he does it on purpose to annoy Harry. (it works)

For the last few weeks, Harry has decided to keep his peace in the mornings and not say anything before noon. But he can’t help his face, which  probably gives his annoyance away. He is already grumpy before he drinks his morning tea and looking for the pan or the butter knife for several minutes doesn’t help him to get in a better mood. He is also annoyed because Louis is really friendly, ridiculously attractive, and devastatingly funny. He’s sure they could be friends, but his focusing on being annoyed at Louis stops him from giving it more than a fleeting thought.

Today, Harry is searching  around the kitchen for the kettle. He finally finds it BEHIND the toaster. He starts preparing his breakfast rye same way as every morning. He sets his bowl of granola and yogurt on the counter, next to his spoon, he puts the tea bag in his mug, and his mug near the kettle. Exactly where it should be.

Right when the kettle starts whistling, Louis enters the kitchen. He still looks really sleepy. Eyes barely opened, hair disheveled, wearing his usual t-shirt and sweatpants. Harry glances at him and goes back to fixing his tea, grinding his teeth to avoid saying something about the kettle. He empties the remaining water in the sink and puts the kettle back in its right place. Maybe he’s being petty. And so what? When he turns back to go to the breakfast counter, he’s faced with a somber looking Louis. Close. Very close. He tries to walk around his flatmate but the other man moves at the same time and blocks Harry from passing past him.

Louis’ eyes are usually a beautiful clear blue, sometimes a bit greener or greyer depending on what he wears (not that Harry really pays attention, of course). But this morning, they are dark blue and Harry is not sure what emotion is behind that particular color (but he still finds it really pretty). Not that he really wants to look, but his roommate is in front of him, less than a foot away, backing Harry to the countertop. He can’t avoid looking at his beautiful eyes. Louis, for his part, is focused on Harry’s face, unwavering. Harry has no clue what’s gotten into his flatmate this morning. Why is he being such a pain, preventing him from going ahead with his routine? He is getting uncomfortable under Louis’ gaze. And more and more angry as the seconds pass. He clears his throat, which is what seems to get Louis out of whatever trance he was in.

“I need to eat my breakfast and go to work. Can you move the other way, please?” Harry says.

Louis shakes his head a bit and moves to the kettle, glaring at him. “You could’ve left the water in the kettle. Now I have to boil it again and I’m already late.”

Harry tries to stifle a smug smile. “Well, it compensates for the time I lost looking for the kettle that was not in the correct place. Call it karma or something.”

He finally sits and starts eating his breakfast, ostensibly ignoring Louis and enjoying his cup of freshly boiled tea and his breakfast bowl. Louis huffs and goes to fill the kettle and put it to boil. He stays with his back to Harry, his hands set on the counter and staring blankly out the window. When the kettle finally whistles, he pours water in his cup and fixes his tea with a bit of sugar. He sits next to Harry at the counter and sips his cup quietly. Harry can’t concentrate on the news article he is trying to read because Louis constantly turns his spoon in his mug, making a very annoying noise. He just needs to have breakfast as fast as possible and get out of the kitchen before exploding. None of them wants to cut through the silence but they’re acutely aware of the other’s presence on the next stool. They’ve grown used to living in the same flat. Even if it’s big enough for both, they often end up in each other’s spaces. But this morning, the closeness feels a bit more heavy. Less comfortable.

Harry is about to get up and leave when Louis suddenly stands up. Harry doesn’t move, his eyes following every one of Louis’ movements. He empties his tea in the sink, rinses his mug and sets it on the drying rack. He then turns around to face Harry. He now sees how Louis’ face is not just the one he has when he wakes up on the wrong foot. Something is bothering Louis. More than usual, that is. He is more tense, like a storm is brewing. Harry searches his memory to find what could have upset his flatmate more than any other morning. He can’t find anything.

“What is it that has you in this mood today?” He asks with a hint of irritation in his tone.

Louis stares at him for a second before rounding the counter to stand next to him. Their eyes are at the same level, with Harry perched on the stool. He turns his head completely towards the other man to try and understand what’s happening. Louis is still staring at him without blinking. He suddenly gets closer, turns Harry’s stool so he can place himself between Harry’s legs, forcing them open. He grips Harry’s upper arms and pulls even closer. Harry has to grab Louis’ waist to avoid falling from the stool.

Louis mutters “Fuck it”.

“Hey! What- “ Harry is interrupted by Louis’ lips crashing on his. It’s unexpected and weirdly hot.

He freezes for a fraction of a second before kissing back. Louis’ hands quickly go up his neck. He cups his face and presses closer. Harry’s hands go to the small of Louis’ back, pulling him even closer, their chests nearly touching. Louis’ tongue is teasing at his lips. He opens his mouth and lets Louis lead the kiss. He’s quickly turning into a hot mess. They lose themselves in the moment for a few more seconds.

Louis pulls back to catch some air and Harry blinks at him. Louis’ eyes are the same dark blue they were when he entered the kitchen. But his face is more relaxed, nearly ecstatic. Harry is mute. He can’t bring himself to say anything.

Louis finally speaks. “You’re so fucking cute when you’re angry at me for misplacing things. Especially in the morning. And this smug grin when you’re being petty about it. It’s just so hot. Irresistible.”

Then, instead of coming back closer to Harry, Louis sighs and takes another step back. Harry’s brow furrows. He wonders if Louis didn’t like kissing him or if he regrets it already. Because Harry doesn’t regret anything at all. He would even say that he wants more.

Louis starts apologizing: “I’m sorry if I’ve crossed boundaries. I should have asked you before.”

“Well, yes. You should have thought that through better, Lou. Because, now I- .”

“I’m really sorry, Haz. I don’t know what came over-.”

“No, wait. I wasn't saying that you should have thought it through because I didn't want it. Was saying that because now I want more but I have to leave for work.” Harry says with a shy smile.

Louis' smile comes back and his face lights up at the words. He gets close again.

“Really? Well, I promise I’ll misplace the cutting board after my lunch so you can be your usual angry kitten tonight. And I can kiss it better again.”

Harry groans. “Oh no! I won’t wait until tonight, Lou!” He grabs Louis’ waistband to bring him back as close as possible and lunges at his lips. Louis goes willingly and if they both call in sick that day, that’s for them to know.
