Moongazing|Back when I had a heart

Summary:

Sea Fairy finds herself staring at the sky one night only to be met with a unlikely friend. Despite all the armor they seem quite nice, and both end up talking till sunrise.
"Oh… I like that thought a lot."

Aka: A AU I came up with where are the Guardians know the Virtues (past beasts) long before they got sealed, seeing as they're all immortal, and Wind Archer and Shadow Milk talked like they knew each other.

Or: Two introverts have a conversation about the stars and moon way in the past.

Notes:

I had thoughts, and my neurodivergent head got very excited, I do not apologize. I might make more about this au as I have so many more thoughts, but no promises. Also I have no idea how punctuation works, so be warned TwT

[Switching POV]

[Made before Silent Salt (Serene Salt as i'm calling them for the past) was released]

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

[Even if history is not recorded, there will still be those who remember. There are things even Elder Faerie can't remember about the beings now known as the beasts. This is one of those tales, one never shared and only known to a select few]

Sea Fairy stands in the water next to the coastline, where her body starts and the water ends unclear as usual, her eyes focused on the sky, or more specifically the moon, her love's symbol. Oh how she wishes she could see that kingdom of dreams, see the woman she loves more than anyone else, Moonlight Cookie, the Lady of Dreams.

Wwrapped up in her own thoughts Sea Fairy doesn't notice the armored figure approaching until they're sitting beside the water. Sea Fairy looks over a bit startled, before noticing who's sitting next to her, the Virtue of Solidarity, Serene Salt. Wearing armor as white as their namesake, helmet covering their appearance –Sea Fairy doesn't think she's ever seen their face, it doesn't really matter though, at least not to her– they also seem to be looking at the sky but more so than the stars then the moon.

"Hello Solidarity. I didn't see you there, also here to enjoy the night sky?" Sea Fairy asks after a moment of silence, she doesn't really mind the quiet, but it's polite to say hello. Glancing between them and the sky Sea Fairy doesn't really mind the Virtue's presence, strangely enough.

"Indeed, it's beautiful tonight, not a cloud in the sky, and full moon. The perfect night to stargaze." The knight answers calm and polite as ever, pausing before asking. "What draws you to the sky rather than the realm of dreams?"

Sea Fairy has to pause for a moment, looking at the night sky in comfortable silence, contemplating her answer before speaking. "Elementals like me don't dream, so this is as close as I can get to seeing her. What about you?"

Serene Salt nods, contemplating their answer as well before talking. "I don't dream either, perhaps it's something about being immortal that takes that away. But to answer your question, I find solace in the stars." Glancing at the sky above, expression hidden behind their helmet, but they seem calm.

"If you don't mind my asking. Why? What about the stars specifically?" The question comes out of Sea Fairy's mouth before she has any time to think it through. It might be rude to ask, but she's genuinely curious.

"I like to think they're the souls of the fallen, watching over the world away from all the mundane troubles that plague mortals here." Serene Salt answers not looking away from the sky, watching the twinkling lights of the stars move across a inky background.

"Oh… I like that thought too. If they're up there I wonder if they get to see her whatever they want..." Sea Fairy replies quietly after a moment, the second part more to herself then them. She really does like that thought, Solidarity has such an interesting way of thinking.

"Her? As in the Lady of Dreams?" The Virtue asks ocean, based on the way Sea Fairy is focused on the moon that's who they think she's referring to. They haven't met Moonligh in person but from what they've heard she's pretty nice, Shenning Sugar seems to like the guardian in question at least.

Sea Fairy nods. "Yes, I want to see her so bad, I hope one day I get to see her kingdom of sleep, but it just feel so far away." She reaches up as if to the moon above, moonlight streaming through the waterfall that is her hair. Caught between the want in her heart and the reality of her fate.

"Maybe for now, but you never know what is possible, perhaps one day you two will be together, love is a odd and fickle thing." Serene Salt comments after a pause, letting the statement hang in the air, the silence stretching on but not uncomfortably so. They stay like that for who knows how long, just staring at the stars and moon as the night sky moves. How unusual it is two basically gods just spending their night watching the stars together, who knows what's going on in either of their heads. But the ocean is calm tonight, oddly enough.

Sea Fairy really does hope they're right, maybe one day she'll be able to see the City of Wizards and Moonlight, but for now this is okay. Is this what the cookies call friendship is? If so she's not complaining, Salt seems to understand being drawn to the night sky after all.

Notes:

And by sunrise, they both had their separate ways, never mentioning tonight to anyone.

Hi thank you for reaching the end of this one shot!
Thank you for reading! This was just a idea I've had for a few days. My first complete work! I did my best TwT

As to why I'm using they/them for Salt, I'm just more familiar writing Silent Salt with these pronouns, I'll maybe change it when they're released though. I'm not going to assume, and I might forget about this.
Object permanence with ADHD is the bane of my existence lol

Also I use a lot of titles and similar as interchangeable with names, that's just how I write, and don't mind the random card suits I just thought they looked cool :P

(Crossed Out's note at the beginning is cannon to the au)
