Work Text:
Once upon a time, in the vast darkness of space, the sun and moon were looked after by two guardian deities.
The sun was looked after by King Dogday, a strong, sunny orange and yellow dog who made sure the sun always burned brightly and kept the planet earth bathed in light, which prevented it from freezing.
The moon was ruled by Lord Catnap, a calm, gentle purple cat who spent most of his time sleeping on the dark side of the moon.
But every night, he would wake up, and make sure that the moon, when it was changing phases, reflected the sun’s light onto the earth.
For many millennia, the two were at odds, for every night that wasn’t a new moon, Dogday was under the assumption that the moon deity was stealing his sunlight.
How else could the moon glow so brightly at night?
And so he instructed the keepers of the clouds to cover the earth in them, which blocked out the moonlight, and caused the earth to become very cold.
This irritated the cat, for the moon was simply reflecting the sunlight onto earth to keep it from freezing.
And so every night he would work harder to make the moon shine brighter.
This continued for many years, the rivalry between the sun and moon getting deeper and more tense with every full moon that passed.
Then, one October day, there was an event neither of them had predicted.
The moon had gotten in between the sun and the earth, causing the first ever solar eclipse.
Both of them saw this as an opportunity to finally see each other in person, for the very first time, so they could discuss what to do about this.
When the moon was fully in front of the sun, Dogday bravely leapt from the sun to the moon, landing on it with a soft thud.
The moon’s soldiers spotted him, and quickly let their leader know that he was here. The moon’s leader was excited, and quickly prepared himself for their meeting.
When they met, within the moon’s largest crater, the two finally locked eyes.
And when the two first saw each other, they both felt something that neither of them had felt before.
It was a warm, fuzzy feeling that made their insides feel like they were whole.
Both of them thought that the other was the most beautiful thing they had ever seen.
Regardless, the sun king clears his throat, snapping the moon lord out of his stupor.
“Good day, ruler of the moon.”
He says.
The moon’s leader nods. “And to you, leader of the sun.”
Dogday walks closer.
“I have a question for you.”
He says.
Catnap nods.
“Which is…?”
Dogday gets a stern look on his face.
“Why are you stealing the sunlight?”
Catnap’s eyes widened.
“Stealing the sunlight…?”
Dogday nods.
“Every night, when the moon is out, it glows with the light that you have stolen from the sun.”
He says.
“So again, I ask why you’re stealing it.”
Catnap was aghast.
“Oh no, your brightness.”
He says. “I’m not stealing the sunlight.”
Dogday raises an eyebrow.
“Then why does the moon glow at night?”
Catnap gives him a soft smile.
“I am simply REFLECTING your beautiful sunlight.”
Now it was Dogday’s turn to be aghast.
“What…?”
Catnap walks closer.
“Sun…” he says. “The earth gets even colder at night without your sunlight…”
He smiles a bit. “So I reflect the light onto the earth when you are sleeping.”
Dogday feels ashamed.
“Oh my… this has been a big misunderstanding…”
He looks down.
“I’m terribly sorry, moon…”
Catnap smiles softly.
“I forgive you.”
He says. “I can understand how you thought I was stealing the light.”
Dogday smiles back.
“Friends?”
He asked, extending his hand.
Catnap nods, taking it.
“Friends.”
The two remained like that for a moment, gently gazing into each other’s eyes.
Then, as if from nowhere, soft music suddenly began to play.
Dogday smiles.
“Well, while we’re both here…”
He offers his other hand.
“Would you care to dance?”
Catnap smiles softly, taking it.
“It would be my pleasure.”
The sun then sweeps the moon off his feet, waltzing him into a dreamlike stupor.
As they danced, their hearts swirled, and their spirits soared.
They both felt happier than they had been in a very long time.
When the song ends, Dogday gently takes Catnap by the waist, dipping him, so the two could look deeply into each other’s eyes.
Catnap’s eyes were full of hope, love, and wonder.
“Moon…”
Dogday says gently.
“You’re the most beautiful being I've ever laid eyes on…”
Catnap smiles, his eyes sparkling.
“And you are the same, sun…”
Dogday pulls Catnap in, kissing him softly on the lips.
Catnap reciprocates, wrapping his arms around Dogday’s neck.
It was a magical moment, both souls drowning and swimming in the deep, rich waves of their love.
When it was over, they looked into each other’s eyes, falling deeper and deeper in love with each other every second.
But unfortunately, the eclipse was almost over.
Their hearts sank, as they knew that they’d have to go back to their own celestial bodies once that happened.
Dogday looks deeply into Catnap’s eyes.
“My moon…”
He says… “I promise, that the next time a solar eclipse happens…”
He says as he softly kisses his cheek.
“I am going to marry you.”
Catnap purrs softly, smiling.
“I would love that, sweetheart.”
And then, in a flare of sunlight, Dogday was back on his celestial body, leaving Catnap alone.
Sighing sadly, he makes his way back to his own kingdom.
For the next 50 years, every waking moment was spent thinking of each other.
Dogday looked at the moon every night, and Catnap wanted to look at the sun, but was afraid of blinding himself.
They drew one another, wrote letters for each other, and waited patiently until the day where they would be reunited.
Finally, the second eclipse ever happened, exactly 50 years after the first, when the moon got in between the sun and the planet earth.
Excited as could be, Dogday once again hops from the sun to the moon…
…where his beloved lord was waiting for him.
As soon as they saw each other, they both smiled more brightly than the sun and moon combined.
They both ran towards each other in slow motion, meeting each other in a loving embrace.
Dogday picks Catnap up, spinning him around happily. While the two laugh in pure jubilation, savoring the feeling of finally being in one another’s arms again.
When he finally puts him down, the two pull back, looking deeply into each other’s eyes.
“I’m keeping my promise…”
Dogday says.
“I’m taking you to the altar right now.”
Catnap blushes, his whole face turning red.
“Right now?”
Dogday giggles. “Yes, right now.”
He leans down, gently picking Catnap up bridal style, and carrying him off to the altar.
And so, during that very same eclipse, the king of the sun and lord of the moon were wed, officially linking their hearts and souls together for eternity.
After their wedding, the two new husbands were softly cuddling, in the very same crater where they had first met.
Even though they were now married, they were both sorrowful, for they knew that they’d have to go back to their homes soon.
But, the moon lord had thought of a way to connect them physically, and not just emotionally.
After talking it through, the two decided to combine their solar and lunar energies, creating an entirely new being…
A prince of the stars.
The young pup was light mauve in color, with maroon coloring on his left eye, ears that were shaped like the sun kings, paws and feet. The rest of him was mauve, including his tail, that was alike to the moon lords.
And thus, the link between the two was materialized, in the form of their son.
And they loved him immediately.
They promised to watch over and guide him, and care for him for as long as they could.
During the day, the young prince would stay with his father on the sun, and during the night, he would stay with his other father on the moon.
When he was old enough, he started to act as a kind of a messenger, bringing words of love from one of his parents to the other.
And during every eclipse, the happy family would be reunited, all spending as much time together as they could.
One eclipse, all three of them were sitting together, looking at the sun and the stars.
The sun king, however, was looking at his loved ones instead, and he couldn’t be happier.
He knew that his love for the moon deity and his star child would only die out with him, and with the sun itself.
