Work Text:

It was a peaceful evening in the city of smiling heights, and Dogday was hard at work in his room.
He had a poster board, markers, glitter glue, and spray paint, and was busy making a promposal sign.

It was nearing the end of the school year, and thus, prom was just around the corner.

Many students were hyped, planning or wondering who they would ask to be their date, or their friend group, or just planning to skip it and stay in and order pizza, either by themselves or with friends.

Dogday of course already knew who he was gonna ask to be his prom date.

He and his amazing boyfriend had been dating for almost a whole year now, and he knew that this was the perfect way for them to take things to the next level.

After working on it for almost three hours, the sign was finally finished.
Dogday gets up, wiping the sweat off his forehead and admiring his work.

He smiles, looking at it.
It was a big, lavender colored sign that says:

“Will you go to prom with me…?”
In big glittery purple and orange letters.

He just hoped Catnap would like it.

~The next evening~

Catnap was chilling in his bedroom, doing his homework and listening to some lo-fi beats, when he heard his phone beep.

He picks it up to see he has a new message from his sweet boyfriend.
He smiles, tapping on it.

Bestboi031: Hey
Bestboi031: Look out your window

Catnap gets up, pausing his music and taking off his headphones, walking over to his window.
He opens it, looking outside, and sure enough, there’s Dogday, smiling and waving from the ground.

Catnap waves back.

“Hey honey.”
He calls down. “What are you doing here?”

Dogday’s tail wags.
“I made something for you!”
He says. “You wanna see?”

Catnap smirks.
“Sure,” he says.

Dogday nods, taking a deep breath.
He then pulls out the sign, smiling like a dork.

Catnap’s eyes sparkle after he reads it.

He was silent for a moment, making Dogday nervous.

But then, Catnap beams, slowly nodding.

“Of course I will!”
He says, moving away from the window.

Dogday smiles, sighing softly in relief.

A few moments later, Catnap comes out the front door, going over to hug him.
“Thank you, my Sun!”
He says. “It’s beautiful!”

Dogday puts the sign down, hugging back.
“You’re welcome!”
He says, his tail wagging.

He holds him close.
“I’m so glad you said yes…”
He nuzzles his cheek. “For a second, I thought you were gonna say no.”

Catnap giggles, kissing his cheek.
“Now why on earth would I say no?”

Dogday giggles. “I don’t know, babe.”

~a few days later~

At the end of the week, it was finally time for prom, and Dogday was in his room, getting ready for the big night.

He was wearing a dapper 3 piece suit, with a light orange dress shirt, dark orange overcoat, black pants, and a dark purple bowtie to compliment his moon.

Admiring himself for a minute or two in the mirror, he looked downright dashing.

After pinning a pretty sunflower to his coat, he says goodbye to his parents and siblings and goes to get in his car to pick up Catnap, since by now he’s finally got his driver’s license.
(But he will not be recreating the Olivia Rodrigo song)

When he finally arrives at the cat family’s house, he walks up and knocks politely on the door.
Catnap’s bee mom answers, smiling when she sees him.

“Oh hello, Dogday.”
She says gently. “What are you doing here?”

Dogday smiles, gesturing to his outfit.
“It’s time for prom.” He says. “I’m here to pick up Catnap!”

Bee nods, smiling. “Oh, of course.”
She says.

She turns around, calling “Nappy, your prom date is here!” Up the stairs.

“Okay! I’m almost ready!”
Catnap calls back.

Bee giggles, turning back to Dogday.
“You can sit on the sofa while Nappy takes his sweet time.”
She says, walking back to the kitchen.

“Haha, okay.”
Dogday says, then goes to sit on the sofa like Mrs. Bee said, while he waited for his kitty.

A few minutes later, he hears Catnap’s voice.
“Okay, I'm ready to go!”
He says, making Dogday look to the top of the stairs.

Catnap was wearing a long, sparkly dark blue dress with a slit, that made him look like he was dressed in the night sky itself.

Dogday’s face turns red, and his eyes sparkle.

“Wow…”
He says. “You look mesmerizing…”

Catnap giggles. “Thanks sweetie.”
He says as he walks down the stairs.

Dogday offers his arm. “Are you ready to go?”

Catnap nods, smiling and taking it.

“Bye mom!”
He calls to the kitchen.

“Bye sweetie!”
Bee calls back. “Have fun, and don’t stay out too late!”

Catnap giggles. “We won’t!”

After he and Catnap get in the car, Dogday drives off, heading towards school.

“So, are you excited?”
He asks.

Catnap nods. “Very.” He says.
“I’m so happy I finally get to wear my new dress.”

Dogday giggles. “Well you look stunning in it, babe.”

Catnap blushes. “Hehe, thanks.”

Dogday smiles softly. “You’re welcome hun.”

When they arrived at school, Dogday parked the car and they both got out, Dogday gently helping Catnap get out.

Arm in arm, they walked towards the school, seeing lots of other students had come as well, all dressed in fancy suits and pretty dresses.

Everyone makes their way to the gym, where there’s music, food, punch and a fun atmosphere, perfect for the prom.

Dogday looks at his boyfriend.
“So, what do you wanna do first?”

Catnap thinks.
“Hmmm…”

He looks around.
“Wanna hit the snack bar first?” he says. “I'm kinda hungry.”

Dogday smiles. “Sure.”

After going to the snack bar and getting little plates of food and glasses of punch, they sat down on the bleachers to eat their snacks.

Looking around the gym, he could see many of their other friends were here.

Hoppy was wearing a fancy dark green suit, and she was dancing with the student council president, Bobby, who was dressed in a gorgeous sparkly red knee-length dress that accented her fur nicely, and a matching hairbow.

Crafty was wearing a pretty teal dress that matched her mane and a hair clip that matched her pendant. She was talking to Picky who also wore a suit, which was a dark pink.

Bubba and Kickin were each other’s dates, and they wore matching suits, in each other’s colors. Kickin had dark blue while Bubba had yellow.
Kickin was trying his hardest to keep up with the rhythm, and Bubba was looking at him endearingly.

The nightmares were there too.
Icky was sitting with Allister, who were both wearing suits in each other’s colors, and they were sharing some punch.

Rae was wandering around, presumably fishing for gossip with her giant bat ears, while wearing a sparkly pink dress that matched her neck fur.

Maggie was wearing a light blue dress and talking with Simon, who was all decked out in a gold and silver colored suit, while looking like she wanted to raid the snack bar.

And Babs and Poe were seemingly absent, but that was no surprise. They usually weren’t ones for crowded parties.

Catnap leans his head on Dogday’s shoulder.
“I’m so glad you asked me to come with you…”
He says. “I’d be so lonely if I had to come by myself…”

Dogday giggles, wrapping an arm around him. “Well who else would I ask?”

Catnap giggles. “I don’t know.”

~Mini timeskip~

It was nearing the end of the night, and it was time for prom royalty to be announced.

Everyone gathered around the stage while Bobby walked up the stairs, and went over to the microphone.

“Hi everyone!”
She says, waving to them. “I’m so glad you all could make it tonight!”

They all clap for her.

Bobby smiles.
“The time has come to announce this year's Huggyvale high school’s prom king and queen!” She says. “Is everyone ready?”

Everyone cheers.

Bobby claps. “Good!” She says.

She gets the ballot ready, looking down at it.

“Without further ado, this year’s prom king is…”

She pauses for dramatic effect.

“SIMON SMOKES!”

The spotlight shines onto the dragon, who smiles proudly as the others cheer for him, as he walks up onstage.

Simon bows royally as they place the golden crown upon his head, and the sash around his neck, then smiles charmingly to the crowd, who was cheering for him, with many girls swooning.

Bobby then looks back down at her ballet card.

“And following, this year’s prom queen is…”

Another pause for dramatic effect.

“CRAFTYCORN!”

The unicorn gasps, tearing up.

The other students tear for her as she shyly walks up onto the stage, a bright smile on her face.
Crafty cries as they place the beautiful silver tiara on her head, accepting the sash and scepter happily.

Her and Simon then happily join hands, waving to the cheering crowd.

“Congratulations to our wonderful prom king and queen!”
Bobby says, clapping for them.

“Darn…”
Dogday says quietly, looking down.
“I was kinda hoping we’d be prom king and queen…”

Catnap giggles.
“Well, they weren’t gonna elect a guy as prom queen.”
He says. “That’s against the rules.”

Dogday looks away. “I guess that’s true…”

Bobby then smiles. “But that’s not all.”
She says. “We actually have a new category this year.”

Everyone lets out gasps and murmurs.

She looks down at the papers again.

“This year’s cutest couple, with over 99% of votes goes to…”

One more pause for dramatic effect.

“CATNAP AND DOGDAY!”

The two gasp as the spotlight shines onto them, then look at each other, smiling.

Catnap gently takes Dogday’s hand, leading him up onstage, where they got matching silver and gold crowns placed on their heads.

“Congratulations, guys!”
Bobby says, clapping for them.

Dogday smiles, pulling Catnap in for a kiss as the crowd cheered for the happy couple.

The two embrace, happily crying.

They knew that they would stay together forever, at least in high school land immortality.

Once the royalty announcement ceremony was over, everyone went back onto the dance floor, going to find their dates for the last dance of the night.

Then, the last song of the night started to play, an 80s style cover of “Closer” by the Chainsmokers.

Dogday giggles. “Care to dance, honey?”
He says, offering a hand.

Catnap smiles and takes it. “You know I do.”

He gently places his hands around Dogday’s waist, while his boyfriend drapes his arms around his shoulders as they start to slowly sway from side to side, looking deeply into each other’s eyes.

As the song progressed, the two danced as gracefully as the night wind itself, not stepping on each other’s feet even once.

Dogday was having so much fun, spinning with Catnap, twirling him, dancing around with him…
The two of them looked like the happiest couple on the dance floor.

As the song reaches the key change, Dogday pulls Catnap in even closer.

“You know something, Naps?”
He says softly.

Catnap giggles. “What?”

Dogday leans in to nose nuzzle him.

“I love you, my angel.”

Catnap’s eyes sparkle.

He smiles brightly as he dips Dogday, kissing him passionately on the lips.

Dogday was startled but kissed back just as passionately, hearing the other people around them go “Awww.”

When the song ended, and everyone else started to leave, the two lovers decided to sit on the bleachers together, snuggling.

Then it was just them.

Sitting here all alone with his soulmate in his arms, Dogday remembers the first day he and Catnap had hung out in that alley.

Ever since that day… Their love was perfect.

They were perfect.

And he knew that they always will be.

Notes:

I figured it’d be a fitting conclusion to this high school arc to have the two bfs going to prom together ehehe

I never went to prom so I can live vicariously through them :’)
