Work Text:
It was a beautiful summer day in a smiling valley, and Dogday was happily standing by the shore of the ruby river, getting ready for his date with Catnap.
(Babe wake up, new made-up smiling critters location just dropped)
A few days ago, he’d casually asked him if he wanted to go on a date, and to his surprise, he’d said yes.
The two then agreed that a little boat picnic outing sounded like fun, even though Catnap doesn’t like water.
So now Dogday was just waiting for him to arrive, making sure everything was fine.
The boat was structurally sound, the picnic basket was full, his fur was manageable, and he even brought a bouquet of pink and red tulips to give him.
“Dogday!”
And there he was.
Dogday smiles, turning around.
And there was a Catnap, just as lovely as ever, holding a moon-themed parasol and wearing a sun hat.
“Hi Naps!”
He says sweetly. “You look beautiful.”
Catnap blushes and giggles. “Oh stop.”
He says softly, swatting the air.
Dogday smiles and gets into the boat. “So, are you ready to set off?”
He says, offering his hand.
Catnap smiles back and nods, taking his hand and getting into the boat as well.
As soon as they were safely seated, Dogday started the motor on the boat, and away they floated.
They look at each other lovingly, Catnap slowly twirling his parasol.
“You’re so cute…”
Dogday says softly, gently taking Catnap’s free hand.
“So are you, dear…”
Catnap says softly.
Dogday sighs softly.
“Your fur is softer than clouds, and shines like amethysts…”
Catnap giggles. “Aww, really?”
Dogday nods, reaching down and getting the bouquet.
“These are for you…”
He says, offering them.
Catnap blushes. “Dogdayyyyy!”
He says, happily accepting them. “You didn’t have to.”
Dogday giggles. “Well, I thought it’d be nice.”
“Well thank you.”
Catnap whispers, sniffing them. “They’re beautiful.”
Dogday smirks.
“Just like you.”
Catnap blushes and hides his face in the flowers while purring, making Dogday giggle.
A few miles down the river later, Dogday feels a bit hungry, picking up the basket.
“So, are you ready to eat?”
Dogday asks, opening it up.
Catnap nods, closing and putting down his parasol.
Dogday pulls out two bento boxes, one wrapped in a purple handkerchief and the other in an orange handkerchief.
“I made your favorite!”
He says, smiling.
Catnap’s eyes sparkle.
“Aww, you shouldn’t have.” He says softly.
Dogday giggles, gently handing Catnap the purple box. “Well, I know you love them.”
Catnap smiles and unwraps him. “You’re the best, sunshine.”
Dogday blushes and swats the air. “Oh stop.”
He says, unwrapping his own.
They both start to eat their sushi with the chopsticks Dogday had brought, chatting about everything and nothing.
“So, how’s your life going?”
Dogday asked, eating a bite of his sushi.
Catnap shrugs. “Same as usual.”
He whispered, eating some fried shrimp.
Dogday smiles. “Cool.”
Catnap smiles. “This sushi is really delicious.”
Dogday’s tail wags. “Well thanks,” he says. “I wanted to make it extra tasty for you.”
Catnap giggles. “You succeeded.”
The two continued to float down the river as they ate, looking deeply into each other’s eyes.
When they got to the widest part of the river, they had finished their food, and put everything back into the basket.
Then, Dogday suddenly got a bold idea, blushing a bit.
“H-hey Catnap…?”
Catnap looked at him. “Hmm?”
Dogday nervously scratches his neck. “I-I know this might be a bit much… but…”
He looks into his eyes again.
“Can we…. Can we kiss?”
Catnap immediately goes red. “Wha- really…?”
He whispers.
“You want to kiss me?”
Dogday smiles and nods.
“I, I don’t know why, I just feel like it’s the right moment.”
Catnap smiles, nodding.
‘Okay, sure…’
He signs, putting down his parasol.
Dogday giggles.
“Alright then…”
He leans forward a bit. “C’mere kitty~”
Catnap laughs, scooting forward in his seat to reach him better.
He then leans forward, kissing Dogday passionately on the lips.
Dogday, of course, kisses him back, wrapping his arms around his waist and pulling him closer.
The two lovers happily made out for a little while, just indulging in their love and emotions for one another.
Unfortunately, the motion and intensity of their love rocked the boat so much that it tipped over, causing both the critters to yell and tumble right into the river.
When they both resurfaced, they continued breathing, looking at each other.
Dogday looked at Catnap nervously, worried that he was upset.
But then, the kitty started to laugh.
That beautiful, snow crystal-like laugh that made Dogday’s heart happy.
Dogday smiles, starting to laugh as well.
The two laughed for a few minutes or so, happiness filling both their hearts as they turned the boat back over, collecting their things and making their way to the bank of the river.
“Well, that could have gone better…”
Dogday says as he pulls the boat up into the shore, tying it to a nearby tree.
Catnap giggles.
“Don’t worry, I had a lovely time before the little accident.” He whispers.
Dogday’s tail wags. “Good!”
He says, picking up his stuff. “Well, I just wanted it to be a special day for you, kitty…”
Catnap giggles, purring as he leans over to kiss Dogday on the cheek.
“It was…” He whispers.
Dogday blushes and smiles, giggling. “Thanks Moonlight.”
As the two soaked critters made their way home, they were just happy to be together.
