Work Text:

Sky closed his eyes as the wind blew through his hair, pulling at his clothing as he flew through the sky as fast as his loftwing would take him. After so long of being stuck on the ground, he felt like a huge weight had been lifted from his shoulders. The tether keeping him tied down had snapped and he was finally free. He was finally home.

He let out a laugh as Crimson tipped to the side, taking a sharp turn around a floating rock. There was truly nothing that measured up to this feeling, and he was so happy he could cry about it. He’d been stuck on the ground for far too long, he'd almost managed to forget how flying felt.

He’d left the others on Skyloft, they’d be fine on their own. Except Warriors, maybe… His poor friend was not the biggest fan of heights, but there was nothing Sky could do to bring him to the surface because the captain simply wouldn’t step off the island, he’d gone terribly pale after he found out how people got on loftwings and very politely refused any offer to take him down. Some of the others weren’t the biggest fan of the edge either, like Legend and Twilight who refused to step too close and Wind just didn’t like the loftwings, although Wild seemed to have no issue with anything. In fact, he had to be convinced to not jump over. Sky should’ve been able to guess that the champion would love to fly through the air as well; maybe he should take him some time if he could convince the others that it was fine and they’d both return in one piece. He wished he could take all of his friends, but he’d settle for just getting to share the joy of flying with one.

He understood their fear, he knew how terrifying it felt to just free fall through the air, but as terrifying as it was it was also exhilarating and he knew Crimson would always catch him. The only time she hadn’t was when she’d been locked away, and that was hardly her fault. Sky had probably given the others a heart attack with the way he’d thrown himself over the edge but in his defense he had warned them he was going for a short trip, and they did know he had a tendency for jumping off cliffs. He’d just needed to be back in the sky, he’d needed it so badly his heart had been aching for it for months.

It was just so peaceful, having nothing around him but open air, and it was so beautiful watching everything pass below. It was the most incredible thing in the world and he couldn’t understand how the others lived their whole lives without ever feeling what it was like to soar above the clouds, or feeling the air kiss their skin as they basked in the warmth of the sun.

Sky heard a shout over the roaring winds and he looked to some other loftwings as he passed a couple of people he knew. They waved at him, and he made an attempt to wave back, but he was going so fast all he really saw of them was a blur of yellow and green feathers. Oh well, he’d be able to talk with them later when he came back home. He’d get a chance to see all his friends and say hello to everyone.

It’d be nice to see them all, even better with him no longer being the center of attention since he’d brought home with him so many ‘interesting new people’ that the other Skyloftians were sure to want to question. It wasn’t too often they saw new people up in the sky, new people were found more on the surface as they established a community down there.

A little island started to come into view and he smiled, slowing down so that when he passed over it he was able to safely jump down. Crimson kept soaring overhead, doing a little loop in the air before turning back and landing on the ground beside him. He’d found this little place years ago, just big enough for one person and a loftwing to sit comfortably, and he’d found himself coming back whenever he felt overwhelmed and needed a break. It was a beautiful little spot to just catch his breath and relax, a peaceful little place to just breathe the fresh air and watch the sun set.

He wasn’t so overwhelmed right now, not like he used to be when he’d come here so often, but that didn’t mean he hadn’t missed his little spot. It’d come to just be a place that felt relaxing to him.

Sky leaned his back against his loftwing, smiling when Crimson wrapped her body around him and laid her head down at his side. He rested a hand on top of her head and let out a happy sigh. He’d missed her a lot too, after so many years of having her as a faithful companion it was hard to be away from her for so long. Tired from his travels he decided to close his eyes and rest, feeling safe with his old friend to guard him.
