Work Text:
He was on the other side of the subway stairs.
For a brief moment, their eyes met—almost like time had stopped. She was going up, he was going down. No words, no smile. But the feeling stayed with her, like a thread tied too tight around a finger.
He lingered in her thoughts all day. His face kept flashing in her mind, like a camera stuck on focus, the background fading into blur. He didn’t know why, but her eyes stayed with him too—like a half-remembered song.
They kept seeing each other—same place, different times. Just passing by, exchanging glances. But it felt deliberate, like the world was trying to say something without speaking.
They never said a word, but both began shifting their routines. A minute earlier. A stop later. Hoping, quietly, to catch the other in that familiar space again.
One rainy night, she turned a corner and bumped into him. Face to face. No umbrella. Just them, and the silence filled with the sound of rain gently hitting the ground. They looked at each other like they already knew.
The red string didn’t pull anymore. The tug was gone. It simply shortened, and shortened—until they met each other’s end.
