Office Hours

Summary:

Rather than her usual updo, Judy's hair cascades down her back, the ends sitting in perfect voluminous curls.

Violet swallows, looking back down at her desk in an attempt to bring herself back to the present, lest someone catch her staring, or worse, blushing. But she just can’t stop herself from recalling the last time she saw Judy with her hair down like this.

Notes:

i just want to point out that every time i write a new little fluffy snippet about these two part of me worries that i've already written this exact situation literally 6 years ago but to the people who enjoy having endless fics about the same situations in a slightly different font, this is for you. and me, this is very much also for me. i will never stop loving these two.

Work Text:

Violet’s head perks right up when she hears Judy’s voice enter the office on Monday morning. She’s missed that voice. She’s had to go the entire weekend without hearing it and she can’t stop her smile from widening when she realises how usual that is now.

When Judy finally enters her view, it feels like her heart stops momentarily. She can just about hear the conversation from her office– Judy thanking Maria for the compliment on how her hair looks today. Rather than her usual updo, her hair cascades down her back, the ends sitting in perfect voluminous curls.

Violet swallows, looking back down at her desk in an attempt to bring herself back to the present, lest someone catch her staring, or worse, blushing. But she just can’t stop herself from recalling the last time she saw Judy with her hair down like this. Recalling how, just this past Friday night, Judy had allowed Violet to slide each carefully placed pin from her hair. How she’d watched, between kisses and playful conversation, as it fell free from its restraints like a perfect, silky waterfall. And suddenly she misses the warmth of having Judy so close. Misses even more so the weight of her in her lap, as she’d straddled Violet’s thighs. Misses, perhaps most of all, the pink in Judy’s cheeks as Violet had commented how beautiful she looked.

When Violet finally looks up from her desk again, she’s immediately met with Judy’s eyes on her and she feels herself crumble all over again. Allowing an almost silent chuckle to fall from her lips, knowing it’s only Judy who can see her, and Judy simply smiles, just a hint of mischief visible in it when she says, “Good morning, Violet.”

“Morning.” Violet replies, watching as she sits down at her desk, throwing one last smile in her direction before getting on with the morning’s work.

When Violet tries to do the same, she finds it’s a little more difficult than she first anticipated.

-

When 12pm rolls around, Violet hears the gentle sound of knocking on her already-open door and looks up to see Judy standing there holding a document folder. Of course she already knew it would be Judy since she noticed her the moment she stood up from her desk. It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact she’s thought of nothing but Judy and her curls all morning.

“Hey.” Violet smiles.

“I got the report done.” Judy says, holding up the folder.

“Oh, great, thanks. Hey,” She repeats, this time more like a question. “Do you mind closing the door for a sec?”

“Of course.” Judy replies, and Violet thinks she catches the corner of her mouth lifting, as she steps further into her office, closing the door behind her and placing the report on her desk.

“Thank you.” She says softly, now noticing her heart rate begin to pick up, even still after three months of secret glances across the office and closed-door conversations. “You look pretty today.”

“I do?” She replies, half like she means it, half like she was waiting for Violet to say just that.

“Very.”  Violet sits back in her chair, turning out from her desk just slightly, before reaching out a hand to the other woman, beckoning her closer.

“Well thank you.” Judy takes her outstretched hand, before taking the other one too, stepping into the space between Violet’s thighs.

“So, what’d you do this weekend?” She asks, unfurling her fingers so that their palms lie flat against each other, before her hands begin to slide up Judy’s forearms and back down again.

“Nothing of great importance.”

“Well, I don’t believe that for a second. Come on, you gotta give me something, anything would sound better to me than spending the entire weekend at a conference surrounded by rich old guys who think it’s absurd that I should even get to be in the same room as them.”

“Okay,” Judy gives a nod, elongating the word as she tries to come up with something, anything that she did this weekend. “I cleaned. I shopped for groceries. I called my mom.” She lists, and Violet nods along with each one. “I baked.”

“What’d you bake?”

“Cinnamon rolls, I brought us some to have with lunch.”

“Amazing, go on.”

“I thought about work.”

“Yeah?”

“Yes.”

“Anything or… Anyone you thought about in particular?”

“Well, there was the report.” Judy says, as though oblivious to Violet’s efforts. “Because I really wanted to get that done today.”

“Right.”

“And there was the ink delivery I knew we were getting, so that’s been on my mind quite a bit. Oh, and we ran out of coffee on Friday, so I knew I wanted to make sure I grabbed some when I was getting groceries–”

“You wanna know what I’ve been thinking about?” Violet finally asks, noticing Judy’s attempt to hold back a smile, as their fingers become entangled once more.”Or rather, who.”

“Sure.”

“I’ve been thinking about you.” She tells her, hands gently tugging on Judy’s, until the other woman willingly sinks down onto her lap and Violet’s hand comes to rest on her lower back.

“Oh really?”

“Mm.”

“And what have you been thinking about me? Specifically?” Judy asks, lifting her chin just slightly as she waits for the other woman to answer and Violet’s hand sinks further down her back, until it’s no longer on her back at all.

“I’m not sure it would be proper for me to say in a work setting.”

“Oh, well, in that case I should really just–” Judy begins, as though she’s about to stand back up, but Violet is already pulling her back in.

“Wait, wait, wait, screw propriety.” She says, making Judy throw her head back, as she attempts to stifle a laugh. “Does this answer your question?”

Judy smiles into the kiss and when they part, she looks at her more thoughtfully before saying, “I think I might need you to expand on that.” And then Violet is the one smiling into the second, longer kiss.

“Come by tonight?”

“On a school night?” Judy asks, eyebrows raised in exaggerated surprise.

“Yeah.” Violet replies softly. “Come have dinner with Josh and I.”

“He’d be okay with that?”

“Of course.”

“Then I’d love to.” Judy tells her with the smallest of shrugs, not trying to hide the elation on her face.

“Maybe one day soon you could maybe even stay the night?”

Judy feels her heart lift inside her chest when she realises Violet is talking about staying over on a week night too, not just a weekend, and the thought of getting ready for work together in the morning fills her with so much warmth she’s not sure how to contain it.

“Okay.” She nods. “Yes.”

“Okay.” Violet echoes, before kissing her again. Her hand cups Judy’s cheek, before sliding around the back of her head, stroking her hair. “I love your hair like this.”

Judy’s cheeks become visibly warm again, memories of Friday night flooding her mind. The breath she lets out is far too shaky for office hours and when Violet just grins at her, her eyes filled with a mix of affection and desire, Judy lets out a laugh.

“Lunch.” She blurts, in an attempt to bring them both back to reality, as she finally stands, their hands still linked, and then, “Cinnamon rolls.” She says it more like a statement, followed by, “Want one?”

“God, yes.”

Judy giggles, squeezing her hand before dropping it and heading towards the door, Violet following closely behind her.
