    The stranger shifts slightly. Phainon’s gaze is drawn upward again, back to his face.

    His eyes remain the most striking part, watching him now with something sharp and assessing.

    He clears his throat, flustered. “I, um. Really am sorry. I wasn’t paying attention.”

    The stranger tilts his head. “Clearly,” he says again, but his tone this time lacks the sting. It’s dry now, perhaps even amused.

    Phainon laughs.

    Phainon had always thought himself immune to first impressions.

    Instead, he found himself distracted by an academic with an unfortunate habit of showing up in his thoughts.

    Dinner arrives, introductions are made, and suddenly nothing feels quite as simple as it did in that hallway.
