and joseph knows he should be insulted — he catches the signal to buzz off, but caesar’s legs are still tangled with his, and joseph doesn’t know if he’s ever had such extended eye contact with him. joseph doesn’t know what to make of it, but clearly there’s no opposition despite the harshness of his words. and maybe his ego should be bruised, but it’s a confession so raw from caesar’s lips that he has to begin to chip at it.
“what, like anyone would fire you? c’mom, caesar.” joseph challenges. “i know it’s your job, but you don’t have to deflect every little thing onto others.” he grins, close enough to see the way caesar grits his teeth. or maybe drunk enough to imagine it, but he takes another sip anyway. he’s got this under control, this is just — fun, a delighted hum chirping from him as he considers putting match to gasoline. it’s barely a question, addicted to the scorch on his hands. “you’re free to call me what you want, then.”
