when you're in my arms (i hold you so tight)

Summary:

"Why did you drink that much tonight?" Satoru mindlessly asks as she stops Suguru from planting her face on the ground for the third time in their short walk.

Suguru lifts her head up to look at her and only smiles dopyly before she chuckles. "I've always loved how beautiful you are," she mumbles, the words coming out a bit slurred but Satoru hears them clear as day anyway.

And then Suguru has the audacity to chuckle amusedly again and nudge her face closer against Satoru's chest, as if she didn't just send her into cardiac arrest.

note: satoru and suguru are the only characters genderbent, everyone else has their canon gender.

Work Text:

Tonight is nice. The weather is warm–not too hot nor too cold, and the sky is cloudless, offering them a nice starry view. Satoru is out at a bar with her small group of university classmates and friends– Suguru, Shoko, Nanami and Haibara.

They decided on going out today to celebrate the end of their school year as they’re all finally done with their finals. Only one more year before they can all graduate, Satoru can’t wait for the moment she’ll be finally free of her family and able to work the job she’s always wanted.

They’re drinking, everyone feeling light and comfortable as they share some stories and reminisce moments from the past school year. Suguru seems to have been drinking a bit more than the others though, if the way she levitates towards Satoru’s body more and more as the minutes pass is anything to go by.

They’ve always been comfortable and tactile with each other, so Satoru isn’t really surprised ; but Suguru is usually never that much into physical contact when they are in the presence of other people. It’s usually something reserved when it’s just the two of them. Not that Satoru is complaining —in fact, she’s very much not.

The longer the evening goes on, the closer Suguru gets to her until the moment when she ends up simply laying her head on Satoru’s shoulder. No one in the room reacts, as if that was just the usual and, well, maybe it is. They’ve always had this… weird relationship — both of them being so close, closer than with anyone else, and yet they haven’t actually jumped into an official relationship.

Satoru is in love with Suguru. That’s not a sudden revelation—she realized it a little while ago on a random Tuesday after class and it didn’t surprise her in the slightest. She didn’t have this famous 'oh' moment following a shocking, groundbreaking revelation. Instead, it felt completely normal, as if it was simply the natural course of things. As if it was meant to be, like she was never meant to be able to resist Suguru’s pull so she should just accept it. Embrace it.

She doesn’t want to sound overconfident –not about this, at least– but she’s pretty sure her feelings are reciprocated. Although she doesn’t know exactly why they never took the plunge. Nothing is stopping them, but nothing is forcing them to do something either. They’re comfortable like this. Maybe they simply don’t need a label? Though Satoru can’t lie, she’d love to be able to call Suguru her girlfriend and brag about that status forever.

“Can’t you be disgustingly gay somewhere else?” Nanami’s bored voice suddenly takes her out of her thoughts.

Satoru scoffs, though she makes sure her body doesn’t jolt too much so as to not wake Suguru up. She doesn’t even remember seeing her falling asleep. Mmh. Maybe she’s been watching her for a bit too long —not that she’ll ever give reason to Nanami.

“You know you aren’t allowed to talk about lesbians as a man, right?”

“I am, and he’s right,” Shoko deadpans then.

Satoru gasps and places one of her hands dramatically to her chest as she turns to her friend. “Girl?”

Shoko just shrugs but otherwise ignores her as she lights herself up yet another cigarette.

Satoru rolls her eyes obnoxiously but otherwise doesn’t make any move to remove Suguru from her. She’d find a way to turn herself into a bed if that’s what Suguru wanted to sleep in at the moment. For now, she seems satisfied with Satoru’s shoulder, though — if the way she buries her face deeper and deeper against her neck is anything to go by.

(The way that simple action results in goosebumps erupting on Satoru’s skin along with a fire lightning inside of her is irrelevant.)

She then spots Haibara coming back from his trip to the restroom, the latter immediately sits down on the booth, as close to Nanami as he physically can. Satoru rolls her eyes all the way to the back of her head.

“What did I miss?” He asks, tone both cheerful and oblivious.

Satoru chuckles. “Nothing important.Suguru’s tired,” she says, nodding in the sleeping woman’s direction. “I’ll take her home.”

“Aw, already?”

Satoru smiles, a real one this time, and looks back down at Suguru’s face. “Yeah,” she says, her tone sounding more fond than she’d expected.

Haibara genuinely looks sad but he still shrugs and smiles widely. “Kay, drive safe and text us when you’re home!”

Satoru smiles again and she nods. “Will do!”

She then gently shakes Suguru’s body awake and can’t help the fond chuckle she lets out when the other woman groans endearingly and tries to bury herself deeper in Satoru’s neck, as if trying to merge with her skin. “C’mon sleepy-beauty, let’s get you home.”

Suguru groans again. “Will you stay with me?” She mumbles.

Satoru chuckles. It’s not as if they're roommates already or anything. Still– “If you want me to,” she replies, because it’s always nice to hear her say it.

Suguru hums and smiles sleepily, “I want you to.”

Satoru blinks down at her as her heart misses a beat. “‘Kay. Let’s go then.”

Suguru hums and reluctantly gets up from the comfortable booth. She vaguely bids her goodnight to their friends and then Satoru helps her standing up as they make their way outside the bar and to her car.

“Why did you drink that much tonight?” Satoru mindlessly asks as she stops Suguru from planting her face on the ground for the third time in their short walk.

Suguru lifts her head up to look at her and only smiles dopyly before she chuckles. Satoru’s heart is in her throat and she can’t swallow it down. She’s not even entirely sure she didn’t die already and reached Heaven. She’s sure that’s what Heaven must feel like.

“I’ve always loved how beautiful you are,” Suguru mumbles, the words coming out a bit slurred but Satoru hears them clear as day anyway. And then Suguru has the audacity to chuckle amusedly and nudge her face closer against Satoru’s chest, as if she didn’t just send her into cardiac arrest.

Satoru gulps and, thankfully, they reach her car before she has the chance to reply. She isn’t sure she wouldn’t have professed her undying love for her best friend in the middle of that parking lot otherwise. But she wouldn’t forgive herself if she were to confess to Suguru when the other is so drunk she wouldn’t even remember it.

She chuckles fondly as she tries to get her heart in check and opens the car door to help Suguru sit on the passenger seat. “Coming from you, that’s something.” She isn’t able to control the way her voice sounds oh so tender, and she hopes Suguru doesn’t say anything about it. She probably doesn’t even notice it. Or maybe she’s just used to it.

Now that she thinks of it, Satoru doesn’t think there’s ever been a day when she did not talk to Suguru in that same soft voice. Even when she purposely tries to annoy her, there’s always that unmistakable fondness to her words.

Suguru’s eyes drop again as soon as her body hits the car seat and Satoru snorts, both  amused and endeared. She stands there for a few moments just admiring the other woman and how utterly beautiful she looks. She stops herself when she comes back to the present and realizes that she must look like a total creep and straightens up.

She carefully closes the car door, walks to the other side of it and plops down onto the driver’s seat before she takes off in the direction of their shared apartment.

They arrive at the apartment about fifteen minutes later and, once again, Satoru shakes gently Suguru awake. Again, she groans cutely and slowly blinks her eyes open. “We’re home?” She mumbles sleepily, rubbing her eyes and effectively destroying her makeup.

Satoru chuckles at the sight and hums. “We’re home,” she confirms. Home. She feels her heart burst inside of her chest.

Suguru only smiles at her in response before she unlocks her seatbelt. Satoru quickly does the same and she’s out of the car before the other has time to even open her door. Satoru does open the door for her and Suguru giggles cheekily.

Satoru offers her hand and she happily takes it. Then she locks the car and they walk to the building. Thankfully they live on the third floor and the elevator is available right away, so they make it in no time. Satoru manages to unlock their front door while at the same time holding Suguru up with an arm around her waist and a hand secure on her hip.

(If she’s exploding on the inside, that’s no one’s business but hers.)

“C’mon, let’s get you to bed.” She says, tone fond as she pulls Suguru into the apartment. Suguru only hums but doesn’t say anything, happily letting Satoru lead her wherever she wants.

Satoru makes Suguru sit on the toilet lid and proceeds to carefully remove her makeup, because she knows that Suguru will complain about it tomorrow if she doesn’t. Then she washes her face quickly —she doesn’t go through the woman’s entire skin care routine though. But as she finishes applying the hydrating cream, she thinks she does an okay job anyway. She’s watched Suguru enough times to know the basics.

Suguru hums and smiles satisfyingly. “I really, really like you, you know.”

Satoru’s breath hitches audibly. Their faces are so close she can count Suguru’s eyelashes. “You know I do too.”

Suguru shakes her head. “No– I mean, I think I love you.”

Satoru gulps. Her heart feels like it’s about to burst out of her chest. She looks down and oh– Suguru is staring up at her and it would be so, so easy to lean in just a tiny bit for their mouths to collide. But she doesn’t, because Suguru is drunk and there’s no way she’ll let their first kiss be that.

So Satoru just smiles and leans in to drop a kiss on Suguru’s forehead instead. “If you can tell me that again tomorrow when you’re sober, I’ll take you out. I think it’s about time.” She grins and feels butterflies in her stomach at Suguru’s wide smile and pink cheeks in response.

Suguru pouts slightly but hums nonetheless. Satoru brushes a strand of hair from her face to place it behind her ear and then she leaves the bathroom so as to let Suguru brush her teeth and change into her pjs. The whole time, she feels as if her heart is about to explode. She’ll never survive dating Suguru if it goes like that. But then again, there really is no better way to die, she thinks.

Before long, Suguru is done with the bathroom and settles herself in bed. Satoru can’t help herself and goes to tuck her in and make sure she’s okay. She leaves a glass of water and painkillers on the nightstand as she’s sure Suguru will need them in the morning. She stands up and is about to leave when she feels Suguru’s fingers wrap around her wrist.

“Can you stay with me tonight?” She asks, her voice already sounding sleepy again.

Satoru blinks down at her and gulps. It’s not as if they never slept in the same bed before, but after what has been said in the bathroom just a few minutes ago, it feels different in Satoru’s mind. Although it’s not like she’s able to refuse Suguru anything, so really it doesn’t matter.

“Yeah, I can,” she replies softly. “Let me get ready for bed and I’ll join you.”

Suguru hums and smiles satisfyingly as she lets go of Satoru’s wrist. The latter smiles down at her and leans in to drop another kiss on the sleepy woman’s forehead. Suguru smiles.

Satoru then leaves the bedroom and goes to the bathroom to brush her own teeth and quickly wash her face. She doesn’t leave herself a single moment to overthink the situation or talk herself out of it; so she hurries herself into a pair of boxers and an oversized shirt and, soon enough, she’s back in Suguru’s bedroom.

Suguru is already asleep and she smiles at the sight. She closes the door and walks quietly to the bed, settling on the side of the bed that Suguru left empty. She doesn’t even have time to fully settle down before Suguru’s body levitates towards hers like a magnet. Suguru snuggles comfortably into her side and drapes one of her legs above Satoru’s waist before she sighs happily and falls into deeper sleep.

Satoru’s entire body freezes. She doesn’t know where to place her hands and her heart is beating so fast that she’s scared it’ll wake Suguru up. Suguru doesn’t look bothered in the slightest, though. She’s sleeping peacefully and looking oh so ethereal.

The more she thinks of it, the more Satoru is sure she has actually died for real.

She doesn’t know how long it takes her but eventually, Satoru starts dozing off. She falls asleep a few moments later with the delicious smell of Suguru’s shampoo in her nose, one of her hands around the woman’s waist, keeping her close to her, and the other resting on her bare thigh.

Satoru wakes up the next morning to Suguru groaning, surely due to the massive headache she must be having. She wants to tease her about it but she finds herself unable to as her brain slowly but surely catches up with the current situation and comes to the realization that everything that happened last night is very much real and not one of her (many) dreams with that exact same scene.

For good measure, she squeezes her hands and– yeah. That’s definitely Suguru’s thigh and waist. Good Lord. Suguru chuckles against her, as if she knows exactly what thoughts are going through Satoru’s mind right now and isn’t bothered by it in the slightest. Satoru feels the back of her neck heat up.

“Hey there,” Suguru says, resting her head on her chin on Satoru’s chest.

Satoru looks down at her and blinks. Damn— it’s so unfair how gorgeous she looks even when she just woke up. Suguru’s eyes widen a bit before she blushes and chuckles, averting Satoru’s intense gaze. Only then does Satoru realize how she voiced her thoughts aloud.

Suguru takes that opportunity to sit up and swallow the medicine Satoru left for her the night  before and quickly resettles against Satoru the next moment. She smiles mischievously, “I meant what I said yesterday night by the way, so you better keep your words and take me out.”

Satoru’s eyes widen in positive surprise and she can’t help the way her smile breaks into a huge grin. Before she can think about what she’s doing, she expertly flips them over and ends up caging Suguru against the mattress.

The latter’s eyes widen in surprise and she gasps. Satoru grins down at her and leans in. Suguru’s hands find home at the back of her head, threading in her hair naturally, as their mouths finally collide together. Both women sigh happily in the kiss, their entire bodies immediately relaxing in each other’s hold.

They have no idea how long they stay like that, lazily making out in Suguru’s bedroom, lighted up by the appeasing morning sun. Though neither of them cares about time. They’re kissing each other both reverently and desperately, the evidence of how long they’ve been wanting –yearning– to do so present in every single one of their actions.

They part a few minutes later, both out of breath and laughing freely. “C’mon,” Satoru says as she slowly gets up from the bed. “I have a date to take you to!” She exclaims and winks obnoxiously down at Suguru who only rolls her eyes in response, although she’s unable to hide the wide smile plastered on her face.
