Work Text:
They had been walking down the beach in silence when Nicolò took a handful of sand and let it sift through his fingers.
Nicolò: "Yusuf? Do you think that we will get to leave at the same time?"
Yusuf: "What do you mean?"
Nicolò: "We were reborn on the same day at the same minute. So, do you think that we will get to leave together?"
Yusuf: "Where does that thought come from?"
Nicolò: "Don't deny it. You have also had the same thoughts."
Yusuf: "How do you know that?"
Nicolò: "Because I know you very well. Because we are the same in thoughts and actions."
Yusuf: "True, but Nicolò, I prefer not to think about the day when we will die."
Nicolò: "Why?"
Yusuf: "Because I fear that one day I will face a morning without you at my side."
Nicolò: "I also fear that morning. That is why I hope we get to die together on the same day in the same minute."
Yusuf: "So, do I, Nicolò, but you didn't answer my question, where did that thought about us dying come from?"
Nicolò: "A feeling that if we go to England, one of us might not make it back to Malta."
Yusuf knew he should listen whenever Nicolò had a feeling, but to Yusuf, the prospect of dying because of a mission in England was a far-fetched thought.
Yusuf: "My Love. I promise you that we have all the mornings left we want and more than we can dream of. Forget that feeling you have, because I promise we will all make it back from England alive. Remember, our sisters aren't done making fun of us."
Nicolò: "Yes, you are right. When are we leaving Malta?"
Yusuf: "In two days, which means we have plenty of time to kiss and spend a day in bed with each other."
Nicolò smiled.
Nicolò: "I like the sound of that."
As they kissed, they didn't have any idea that within the next four months, one of their sisters would be lost at sea, and it wouldn't be them who would find her, five hundred years later.
