Chapter Text
Back in high school you weren’t just smart, but pretty. You didn’t think you were the prettiest girl in class but you didn’t take yourself to be particularly ugly either. And that you weren’t wrong about. There was this one guy in most of your classes, he wasn’t popular or particularly attractive but he was pretty smart. He always managed to get above average on tests but nothing that would draw a ton of attention to him. But you managed to notice him. He was strange. You couldn’t bring it to yourself to remember his name. But he knew yours. You’d catch him staring every so often but it was the “I’m going to find you and kill you” type of stare nor was it “I’m overly obsessed and in love with you”. It reminded you of a longing that knew it wouldn’t reach. You never bothered to talk to him and he never did to you however.
When prom was coming up, you were bombarded with several requests. You didn’t even want to go to prom with a date, hell, your family didn’t like most of the people at your school. They barely liked your friends when you brought them over or hung out with them. You’d walk to class, day after day politely rejecting anyone who asked you to prom with a simple “Sorry, I’m not interested” or “No thank you”. But that didn’t stop them. They continued to ask until you had to literally had to wait until the halls were almost stuffed full to make it to your next class.

After a while all the over confident boys had stopped asking. You hadn’t really planned to go to prom but your parents were nice enough to still get you a dress you’d like, just in case. It was a pretty color, but you doubted if you’d wear it. It was a week before prom, you didn’t have a date but all your friends did. Gee, what great friends I have. The thought wondered on your mind as you stopped in the hall to your locker. You planned to grab the books you needed for your next class and head to the library for lunch. But the halls had other plans. Instead of stopping at your locker, you somehow managed to get stuck in a crowd and made it to your locker 5 minutes before lunch was over. No library time for you.
You grabbed your books quickly and hall tailed it to class. When you made it to class, the teacher wasn’t there yet. Most likely on their break as usual but you still sat at your seat. Not long after, another student join you in the empty classroom. It was that guy from before. You felt bad immediately since you couldn’t think of his name.
“Oh hello Y/N.”
He had some sort of Accent but you couldn’t tell where from. Maybe something from Europe.
“Uh, Hello.”
You felt your conscious yelling at yourself for forgetting his name.
With that short greeting he went and sat down in his seat somewhere behind you. It wasn’t long after before other students made their way in and then the teacher. Class was boring, you understood the lesson more than enough so you let yourself wonder your mind. You couldn’t let go of the thought of the guy you spoke with before class started. He was mysterious but intriguing. Class felt short once you heard the bell ring. You packed up the rest of your stuff, making you one of the first to leave class but you stopped when you heard someone behind you call your name. It sounded like the same as before.
“Y/N! Can you slow down, cavolo..”
When you turned around you saw him. The guy from before.
Huh? What does he want? Did I leave something again.?
“Yea?”
“I’m sorry if this abrupt, but..”
He took a pause to catch his breath. You didn’t think you’d walk that fast to your next class.
“Would you make me a really happy man and let me take you to prom? Or at least a date?”
That, wasn’t what you were expecting.
He seemed, less desperate than the other guys. Something more genuine than just wanting to go out with a pretty girl. You weren’t sure about going on a date, especially with all the studying you definitely planned to pick up on, but going to prom with him wouldn’t be too bad. Right?
“I- uhm, yea. Yes, I’love go to prom with you.”
You weren’t prepared to answer anyone with some form of yes from all the declining you did.
He looked happy. His face was well-built and you never really saw any form of emotion from him so this was a first. He even had a slight blush, and a stupid grin on his face. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think he’d been expecting you to say yes a long while ago.
“Oh okay! Could I get your number? So I know when to pick you up.”

The night of prom, you were getting ready having almost forgotten about it until one of the teachers reminded the class. You hadn’t told your parents about your new-found prom date since you couldn’t even remember his name. So you made sure to get your stuff and head over to one of your friend’s house where all the girls would get ready together. You texted your date the place you’d meet him at for you to be picked up. Prom started at 7 and it was currently 5:30. As you were getting ready you told your friends you had a date and they’d pick you up by 6pm. Most of them were shocked, little ol’ you having a date? Wouldn’t believe it.
When 6pm rolled around, you were finished getting ready. The dress your parents picked out looked good on you, your hair was done, and the jewelry you had picked out looked good together with the dress. You sat out on the porch of the house. You checked your phone to see if maybe you were crazy. Maybe he wouldn’t come. But after a while, a really nice, jet black car rolled up. You walked to the pavement before the driver got out and opened the backseat door. You saw your date sitting in the backseat with flowers. They were your favorite color. You got in and sat with him.
“Sei così bella.. Uh, you took so pretty”

Prom was good from what you remembered. You managed to have a good time, even getting to give your date a kiss before the night ended. But that was years ago. You still can’t seem to remember the guy’s name and even not long after prom he switched schools. You were sad, even when you called the number you saved for him had gone out of service. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be.
You hadn’t been paying attention as you stood at the cashier of the grocery store you worked at before realizing someone was waiting.
“I’m so sorry, hello how can I help you?”
You had gone nervous but the man laughed.
“Well if it isn’t Y/N, do you remember me?”
His accent was thick. With age, you could tell it might’ve been Italian.
“Oh? Who are you again, sorry I don’t remember.”
You didn’t want to lie to him and pretend to remember someone you don’t.
“It’s me, Mafioso. From high school, I took you to prom junior year”
That name. It didn’t match the face you were looking at now. But that was his name. The guy in almost all your classes, Mr. Practically Invisible but interesting. The guy who took you to prom before disappearing.
Looking at him, he had grown so much. He was tall, muscular and massive. He wore what looked like business clothes. His stature was easy to tell he wasn’t a man to deal with the nonsense or mess with. He really had a massive glow up since high school and that’s the one thing that shocked you most. Him? You went to prom with him?
“Mafioso..”
You played with the name as you said it before realizing you were staring.
“Ah! Sorry, what can I help you with today?”
You said with a slight blush and nervous tone.
