Rilla’s diary
I haven’t felt this way since Carter Flagg told me he’d pre-ordered The Dark for me and Mums said I could stay home from Aunt Mary Maria’s funeral to play it. I know Dad wasn’t thrilled about that, but there is only so much you can say when you have a family of 8 (not counting Susan!) and 1 working car.
So, 3 of us got out of going.
Jem, because he got all bruised up when he totalled his car (not that missing the funeral was a huge punishment, but don’t let Dad catch me saying that).
Shirley, because he said he had a debate club thing (I swear, I didn’t even know he was in the debate club—and I’m not sure Dad knew either, going by his expression when Shirley said he couldn’t go).
And me.
And Susan, of course. But she’d once said she’d pray for the demons in hell after Aunt Mary Maria’s death, so I don’t think Mums would have risked asking her even if there was room in the car.
Anyway, coming back to the point, I just overheard Walter tell Mums that Ken would be coming to Christmas dinner after all!!! (Persis too!)
Mrs. Ford had originally told Mums that Ken and Persis wouldn’t be able to make it because they were going to see some Ford cousins.
Turns out, that plan’s been scrapped and all the Fords are coming.
I’m going to wear the new emerald green skirt Di got me, with my light sage sweater, and the combat boots Mrs. Ford gave me for my 15th birthday.
(I must conclude I’m her favourite, based on the presents she gives me.)
Fuck, I think I have a ladder in my nice black stockings. I don’t think I repaired or replaced them after Jen’s party.

Ken came to dinner last night! And he looked so good omg. His jeans do incredible things for his butt.
And I know I looked cute too. Mrs. Ford said so!
Jem said I looked like a leprechaun, but I know he said it on purpose because I ate the last monkey-face cookie.
Walter invited me to come along when everyone went for a midnight walk to our favourite late-night hot chocolate spot.
I would’ve argued if they’d tried to leave me behind with the parents, but I didn’t have to. I love Walter.
Anyway, I walked with Ken and Walter part of the way.
Obviously, I didn’t want to cover up my outfit with my old jacket and Mums left me to face “natural consequences.”
Now, I hate natural consequences, but for once, my dumb decisions worked out.
I started freezing like 15 minutes in, but I didn’t want to say anything, and Ken noticed!
He shook his head and gave me his varsity jacket for the walk.
He did take it back later, but that’s got to mean something, right?
(His jacket smelled amazing btw!)
I don’t care what Di says about guys who wear their varsity jackets everywhere, Ken looks hot in his.
Di doesn’t know everything.
Ken laughs every time she says it, so clearly, he doesn’t take himself that seriously!
He also gave me an origami jumping spider.
Well…more like scared the crap out of me with one.
It’s so annoying, but also so sweet that he’s kept up the tradition.
I low-key hate the nickname, though.
