Work Text:
The sun was setting behind the hills.
There were hardly any people left on the beach at that hour. Just a few gathering up their things, and the fishermen tying up their boats, ready to head home after a long and exhausting day.
Wave was quietly admiring the sea, which rested in an intermittently calm state, when he sensed a figure approaching him from behind and then sitting beside him.
Wave didn’t need to turn around to know it was Lava.
He sat next to him in silence, and for a few moments, neither of them spoke. They simply looked out at the sea together.
They had shared many moments of silence like this one before, but this time, it felt different. They both knew that summer was coming to an end — and with it, the moment when they would have to leave behind the peaceful life they had built on the island and return to the harsh reality of their lives in the city.
Wave had a life waiting for him outside — one full of responsibilities he had been avoiding during these past months. But the time had come; his time was up.
He turned to look at Lava sitting by his side.
The older boy was already looking at him. Wave had always liked these moments — when no words were necessary, and he could find the answer to every question buried somewhere in Lava’s gaze.
But this time, what he saw there didn’t bring him comfort.
He knew Lava was thinking the same thing he was. Their time had run out. The beach, the sunshine, the life they had created together here — all of it was over.
But their love wasn’t.
And that, that was what hurt the most.
That part they couldn’t just leave behind. It would follow them — into the life that awaited them beyond this place. And most likely, even if they didn’t want to admit it, it would follow them forever.
A romance like this wasn’t something that could be forgotten easily.
Lava smiled gently and raised a hand to rest it on Wave’s cheek, stroking it softly.
- “What are you thinking about, my love?”
Wave’s eyes started to sting, and he turned his gaze away from Lava, letting it fall once more on the calm sea in front of them.
- “Nothing… I was just thinking.”
He didn’t want to cry. These were the last moments he had with Lava, and he didn’t want to remember them as a sad scene where all he did was cry. No — he wanted to remember every second with him as something beautiful.
Because he knew that’s what he would hold on to once Lava was no longer around.
Lava lifted his other hand and cupped Wave’s other cheek, gently guiding his head until their eyes met again.
- “Thinking about what?”
Wave bit his lip and shut his eyes tightly.
- “Maybe it sounds selfish. Maybe I should tell you that once we leave this place, I want you to forget me, to move on, to meet someone new and be happy. Maybe that’s what I’m supposed to say — what’s right. But…”
A few sobs escaped Wave’s throat, breaking his words, and he realized tears had begun to fall from his eyes just as Lava reached up to wipe them away with his thumbs.
- “Lava, please. Tell me you’re going to remember these moments we’ve shared here. That you’ll keep them close to your heart the same way I will. Please, tell me you won’t forget me.”
Lava’s eyes began to well up too, and Wave could see the tears threatening to spill over. When Lava opened his mouth, Wave thought his voice would sound broken — but instead, he spoke with steady conviction.
- “Wave, I love you. You’re the person I love the most right now, the one I’ve loved more than anyone else in this life — and the only one I’ll ever love. Nothing could ever compare to you or replace you, and I’ll never be able to forget you. Never, baby.”
Wave let out a breath of relief and rested his forehead against Lava’s.
- “I love you too, Lava. I love you so much.”
Lava gently pulled back just enough to place a soft kiss on Wave’s forehead, then looked back into his eyes.
- “If fate doesn’t let me see you again, I swear I’ll fight it with my bare hands. We will meet again, Wave. And when we do, I won’t let anything ever separate us again.”
Wave let out a small laugh, even as tears continued to run down his face. He gave Lava a tender kiss on the lips, then rested his forehead against the older boy’s once more.
- “I’ll help you.”
Lava gave him a surprised look and leaned his head back with a laugh.
Wave had always been against violence.
But maybe, just maybe… it was time to throw a few punches — if it was all in the name of love.
