Work Text:
Tim never thought he would be in this position. He never thought that he would be stupid enough to get dosed with truth serum without even realizing it. And the worse part, okay it wasn’t the worst part but Lucy is here with him. And she’s just as out of it as he feels. And this is the first time they have been alone together since Vegas and the whole fiasco.
She looks around the room that they are sitting in and then at Tim with a faraway look in her eyes.
“Hey.” Lucy says and she leans over in the chair he’s sitting in. “Watcha thinking about?” Tim freezes and looks at her.
“Nothing.” He lies and she furrows her brows together although he’s not sure she actually understands him. “What about you?”
“The sky.” She says. “I miss the sky. It’s so dark and cold in here.” Tim looks around the room and well she’s not wrong.
“True.” He says and he kicks out his foot. “What else are you thinking about?” But Lucy shakes her head and points a finger at him.
“Your turn.”
“My turn?” He questions her. Lucy nods and he slumps forward a little. “What do you want to know?”
“Were you really going to wash me out as a rookie?” She asks.
“Yes.” He says honestly and Lucy lets out a fake gasp. “But you had potential and I didn’t want to take that from you.”
“Wow.” Lucy says. “Okay. So you like me?” Tim freezes again and looks up at her hoping she doesn’t see the panic in his eyes. Because the truth is, he does like her. A lot. He knows what it’s like to kiss her now, he knows how her lips feel against his and he has spent far too many nights imagining his mouth on the rest of her body.
“What?” He asks. “No. I mean you are fine.” Lucy’s face falls a little and Tim’s heart drops.
“You were my rookie. I was training you.” He says but his voice falters a little. “I was making you into a better cop.”
“And you did.” She says but her voice is a little dry. “You did your job.” Tim swallows down the words he wants to say and scoots forward a little.he might not be good with words but he wants to get this out.
“You weren’t just a job Lucy. You are different than any other rookie I have ever trained. You have empathy, you are stubborn and strong. You survived a kidnapping and almost dying.” He says and he almost does too but he wants to continue. Just thinking about losing Lucy isn’t something he wants to think about. Lucy stiffens up a bit at his words and he reaches forward to grab her hands. “You were more than just a job. So yes Lucy, I like you.”
Lucy looks down at their intertwined hands and gives them a squeeze. “I like you too.” She says and those words are heavy. He knows there is more behind her words.
“Good to know.” She says trying to keep his voice light. “Good to know.”
“Your turn.” Tim says. Lucy looks at him curiously but he knows she knows what he is saying.
“My turn.” She repeats and then takes a deep breath. “Okay here we go.” She takes another deep breath and lets it out.
“Your turn.”
“When you were asking all those questions in Vegas.” Lucy starts and Tim nods softly but doesn’t say anything. “I lied.”
“You lied?” Tim questions. “About what?” Lucy swallows hard and looks away from him.
“You said it didn’t feel like pretend and I said basic biology.” She says. “But I was scared. And it was all happening so fast.”
“I didn’t mean to pressure you.” Tim says but Lucy shakes her head and squeezes his hand.
“No.” She says. “You had a right to question me. I just didn’t know what to say.”
“I get it.” Tim says and he leans forward at the same time Lucy does. “I surprised myself.” Lucy huffs out a laugh and gives him another smile.
“Really?”
“Yeah.” He says and takes another deep breath. “Another confession?”
“Sure.” Lucy says. “Might as well.” Tim nods but doesn’t move from where he is sitting, nor does he let go of her hands.
“I like you.” He says. “A lot. More than I even realized and it wasn’t pretend to me. It still isn’t.” Lucy’s mouth falls open a bit and then she leans forward even more so her forehead is pressing against his.
“Another confession?” She asks and then goes on before he can answer. Tim feels like he’s floating on air with how close they are.
“I like you too.” She says and a smile spreads across his face. “A lot.”
Tim breathes a sigh of relief, and then kisses her pulling her tightly against him. It feels like the last time they kissed on the plane but this one is more meaningful. Tim pulls back and pushes some hair back.
“Still like me?” He asks teasingly. Lucy rolls her eyes and nods her head. She has a glow about her he has a feeling has nothing to do with the truth serum. And everything to do with them. He can feel her heart beating against his. And he wants to stay in this moment forever.
“Yes.” She says and he can’t wait to tell her again how much he likes her when they are both off the truth serum.
Because he wants her to know. He wants to shout it from the rooftops but for now—
He just pulls her tighter against him and presses a kiss to the top of her head.
This was perfect.
