Work Text:
Shy. Timid. Scared. Quiet. Those were the words that people often used to describe Johnny Cade, your best friend. Though they’re not wrong, he’s also got a side that isn’t quiet or scared.
When you were alone with him he would ramble about his dreams to leave Oklahoma in the future and run away from the harsh society of Tulsa, or whatever stupid act Two-Bit had pulled at the Nightly Double, or what Dally had done that day at the Dingo or at Buck’s.
Sure, he’s quiet and shy, but it makes him all the more thoughtful and caring. He notices stuff that other people in the gang don’t pay attention to and it only makes your feelings for him grow stronger. Afraid of ruining what you guys already have, and your lack of courage, you’ve never told him.
You awoke from the sound of quiet knocking on your window, after moving the curtain aside you see that it’s your best friend, Johnny.
“You alright?” You ask softly.
“Yeah, my old man just had too much to drink,” he brushed off the question but you could see the tears in his eyes, threatening to fall.
You lay down on your bed and you pat the spot beside you, signaling for him to do the same.
“You ain’t foolin’ nobody, Johnnycakes.”
And in the blink of any eye, you were hugging him as he let the tears flow freely.
“I-I just feel like..like ain’t nobody like me,” his voice cracks.
You pull away just enough to look him in the eyes, his beautiful black eyes, and before you could stop yourself your lips were already brushing against his in a chaste kiss.
“It don’t matter if you’re parents ain’t like you. I like you. I love you Johnny.”
When you finally come to your senses, you start to panic. No way had you just done that, right? God, this was going to ruin everything.
“I’m so sorry, I-,” you started to say, but you were stopped by a tender kiss pressed against your lips. You pull away moments later for air, cheeks flushed, lips wet. You bury your head into his chest to hide your crimson face.
“I love you too,” he mutters softly.
Silence falls over the room, you two both much too embarrassed to say anything. And although it takes far much longer than usual to fall asleep, due to your pounding heart, and anxiety from the situation, you eventually drift into a peaceful sleep.
