Chapter 1: He's Not A Saint, He's Not What You Think

Chapter Text

Yuuichirou Hyakuya isn’t one to observe people. However, he is well aware of the fact that you can tell a lot about someone just by looking at their hands. For example, the Principal Kureto’s hand is so steady and calm as he writes a memo to Yuu’s parents informing them that he’s expelling their son. Wait, what?

“Whoa whoa whoa. Expel!? Are you serious?! Isn’t that a little too fast?! Come on!” Yuu yells, jumping from his seat. He’s a little tempted to grab the memo and rip it into pieces but that’ll only cause him more trouble. “I swear I didn’t mean to punch someone this time!”

Kureto only raises an eyebrow and continues writing.

Yuu has been known as a troublemaker ever since he enrolled. He’s been going back and forth from the principal’s office too much that he knows this place like the back of his hand. That also explains why the principal isn’t even fazed by his screams.

“That’s what you always say every time you get in trouble. I didn’t mean to! They started it! I was just trying to help someone!” Kureto mimics Yuu in a tone that sounds like a whiny kid.

“Exactly! That’s why I don’t get why you’re calling my parents and expelling me now! What changed?!” Yuu argues. He’s always been punished, given a warning, suspension but now expelled? Really? All he did was punch a kid in his class. The kid was barely injured. Why does this feel like a bigger problem than the rest?

“Good question.” Kureto immediately grabs a clearbook and hands it to Yuu without missing a beat as if he practiced this moment already. “You used to be the number one ranking student in the school even though you’re a trouble maker. At the start of your second year, your grades dropped. There’s no point in keeping a trouble making student who doesn’t benefit the school.”

Yuu frowns, sitting down and examining the clearbook. It’s his file. He’s always known to pick fights but his grades were great. That’s why the principal went easy on him. He turns the page and grips the clearbook. The next file belongs to Mikaela Shindou.

Mikaela Shindou just transferred to this school this year and yet he already managed to get the number one rank in the school. He even gets perfect score on quizzes and exams despite having a different curriculum from his previous school. He’s brilliant and the reason for Yuu’s growing rage.

Mikaela may be smart but he’s no saint. He looks at life like it’s a party and he’s the only one on the list. He thinks he’s so much better than everyone else. He only acts all polite and nice in front of the teachers. One time he was partners with Yuu in a project and long story short he flew solo without telling his partner. Apparently he doesn’t need a partner to make a handwritten research project and presentation because it’s easy as taking candy from a baby. He’s so fucking arrogant.

Yuu hates him so much.

“I don’t intend to go to school just to pick fights! It’s the students’ faults for always getting on my nerves! My grades used to be great and you said you’ll help me maintain it! Do as you say and help me out instead of expelling me!” Yuu pleads, throwing the clearbook at the principal’s desk. Whoops.

Kureto sighs and looks back at Yuu’s records.

“I guess I did say that. Hmm…You only pick fights with bullies and your grades aren’t all failing. How about this…” Kureto glances at the box labeled ‘Student Council’. “The Student Council is a one way ticket to passing high school with flying grades and it looks good on an application for college. But it requires great responsibility that’s why no one plans to apply yet.”

It’s not like Yuu has any other choice.

“Okay, I’ll do it.” Yuu agrees, accepting the list of requirements that Kureto is handing him. It’s probably mostly just paper work. That couldn’t be hard to do. He looks at the lists and notes that all he needs is to pass a 1 x 1 and to fill the application form. After that, next semester, he’s officially the new Student Council President. See? Easy.

“There will be plenty of work since no one else is applying for the other positions. But I’m sure you can handle that.” Kureto waves off. Upon seeing Yuu read the requirements, he throws away the memo he wrote for Yuu’s parents. “You'll still get punished though. Clean the 2nd and 3rd floor bathrooms after classes. After that, you start on the requirements and - ”

The door opens and Yuu restrains himself from rolling his eyes at the sight.

“Oops. Miss Aoi said it was okay to enter. Sorry, I’ll just go and - ” Mikaela pauses when Principal Kureto gestures for him to take a seat. He casually makes his way towards the chair across Yuu.

Yuu hands the paper back to Kureto and notices that Mikaela is eyeing the requirement list. The two make eye contact and Mikaela gives him a condescending smirk. Damn it. He looks at Kureto waiting for the dismissal so he can finally leave but it seems the principal has other ideas and shakes his head.

“I’d like to apply for the position of Student Council President.” Mika smiles as he digs into his bag. He pulls out a folder and hands it to Kureto. “All the requirements are there and I even made my own applications and a few compilations of a few accomplishment and recognitions I’ve received in my previous school.”

Principal Kureto laughs as he accepts the folder.

“Well, well, well. You heard it too, Hyakuya?” Kureto says, flipping through the contents of Mikaela’s folder. From the looks of it, it seems Mikaela is thoroughly prepared.

How ridiculous. Yuu rolls his eyes.

“I’ll pass mine tomorrow.” Yuu assures, glaring at Mikaela’s folder. The arrogant blond just had to one up Yuu again. His only chance of boosting his grades and Mikaela came in here just to ruin it again.

“What?!” Mikaela stands from his seat. “With all due respect Sir, but you’re letting that apply for Student Council President?” he adds, making vague gestures at Yuu.

Yuu’s eye twitches at the way Mikaela is addressing him. Without thinking about his actions, he stands from his seat and grabs Mikaela by the collar of his uniform.

“YES THIS TROUBLEMAKER IS APPLYING! DO YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT?! DO YOU HATE COMPETITION OR DO YOU JUST HATE ME?” Yuu yells, tightening his grip.

Kureto immediately stands from his seat and separates the two boys.

“Competition? Are you kidding me?” Mikaela smirks, fixing his uniform. “You aren’t even a competition. I have grades better than yours. A clean record. Perfect exams. I’m a clear winner!”

Yuu grits his teeth in anger. He wants to punch that smirk off Mikaela’s pretty face.

“Boys!” Kureto yells, standing between the two. “There’s two of you. And when there’s two applicants for SC President, the principal isn’t suppose to choose. The students of this school do.”

Mikaela sits back in his seat and nods understandably.

“If I were any of you, I’d work on my posters and flyers for the start of campaigns next week.” Kureto orders. Seeing as the two aren’t looking at each other anymore, he walks back to his desk.

Everything is in my folder, Sir. I guess I’ll go now. Excuse me.” Mikaela politely pardons himself as he leaves. He ignores Yuu and continues to make his way out.

Once he left, Kureto takes hold of Mikaela’s folder.

“Polite even after showing how rude he can be. That’s my kind of student.” Kureto nods to himself, eyeing a certain item in Mikaela’s folder. “If I were you, Hyakuya, I’d start on my requirements.” he adds, handing a Yuu a paper from Mikaela’s folder.

Yuu looks at it for a moment until it dawns to him. He fights the urge to rip it into pieces and instead, gives it back to Kureto.

Vote Mikaela Shindou for Student Council President!

The arrogant bitch anticipated this thing to happen and already has campaign flyers. He’s really keen on staying on top and being better than everyone else.

Yuu swears he’s never hated someone so much.
