I’ve been here before
being cordial to coworkers who secretly abhor
the happiness behind my smile
or the effort behind my style
and then there’s the seemingly innocuous questions they ask
deciphering their true intent is quite a task
in casual remarks they poke and prod, seeking a reaction
or to make you slip up, and commit an infraction
then in the moment of your vulnerability, they delightfully bask
all while wearing that smiling, affable mask.
