Project Halfblood

Summary:

n a realm where humans were oppressed and forced to serve those in power, Jisung lived a double life— a line in between– something never heard of before. He had been living with both vampire and werewolf blood flowing through his veins.

Chapter 1: His Bleak Past

Chapter Text

When Jisung was born, it had been forced upon the world. He was nothing more than a mere lab rat, a successful experiment done by scientists. He had met his father a few times when he could barely walk, his mother died at his birth due to the unnatural mix of the two kinds. He had remembered that his dad had always been kind to him, choosing to protect his own son– the murderer of the love of his life– even when it caused him pain he did not need to endure.

“If you choose to be kind to the right people, the world will be kinder to you too.” Those were his fathers last words before Jisung never saw him again, he had only heard a few years later that he had been tortured to death after he had rebelled against strict orders from the superiors. Their facility was run by the government, and most superiors were scientists, and they never revealed their true nature. There were those under the superiors too, but they still held power against their hostages.

He had also learned that his mom was a wealthy vampire from a long line of conglomerates, his dad on the other hand was a werewolf, his family owned acres of land, supplying agriculture to different parts of the nation. They had met in a meeting, their families often traded with one another, it wasn’t rare for vampires and werewolves to exchange goods, but to live a peaceful life together was a different story. Many folk tales of vampires betraying werewolves using their magic for personal gain or how werewolves could tear them apart in their sleep were often told to children as a warning to never keep a kind of a different species close to you. Jisung never heard of those stories from his dad, he had always told Jisung that his mom was the most beautiful person inside and out, and he was always glad that Jisung also held the same rich dark purple shine she had. But Jisung never saw the purple shine he had always talked about, sometimes he would see it when the light reflected on his eyes, but he would always assume he was just imagining it.

The apparent year that his father died was the same year he had to begin training, from then on he was never called Jisung– but rather– the halfblood. After years of experimenting, Jisung had been their only successful subject, scientists weren’t so sure as to why he was the only one who had managed to receive a perfect mix of both parents, some had wondered if it was because his parents were truly in love, or if there was something unique in his genepool that had made it possible. They tried to gather as much data as possible from Jisung’s data, but they were never able to draw a proper conclusion. Another one of their assumptions was that his mother had given Jisung some sort of strength the moment he was born, which was why she had died the way she did. Nonetheless, nothing was confirmed so it still remained a mystery.  Since experimenting with others had drained too much of their resources, they decided to stop trying to make another hybrid but rather focus their remaining funds on Jisung’s assets.

From his mother alone, Jisung inherited an advanced form of her telekinesis, not only was he able to manipulate objects, he was also able to summon any object from imagination alone. However, he never shared the pride of every vampire, he wasn’t immortal, nor did he need blood to survive. He had a heart, and his honey skin was not cold to the touch, which gave away the most obvious physical signs of being a vampire. From his father on the other hand, he inherited the power to shapeshift into a wolf, his physique however was much smaller than regular wolves, much less those dominant in the pack. They weren’t sure if Jisung had the ability to be in a pack, or to mate with another wolf for that matter. But since he was the only successful and living experiment in their hands, they had to make do with what they had.

Their main focus in training was drawing out his magical ability, often leading him to faint due to magic exhaustion, and it always left him with a gruelling amount of nausea and fatigue. To add onto his nightmares, they had also injected him with chemicals often, but he never always knew what they were for. Sometimes he would come across the words of heightening his senses or enhancing his magic capacity, even if the chemicals were to work or not, it would always leave him feeling like his veins were on fire, and he hated every moment of it.

“Here’s your meal for the day.” He recognized that voice– it was one of the few kind people that had cared for him, she was exceptionally sweet when no one was around, and Jisung was thankful that she had never abused her power. She placed the tray down softly, approaching Jisung with all the warmth she could muster.

He looked up, a small kind smile plastered on his face . He could smell the other item she was holding, and he always loved the little surprises she had for him.

“This set sucks, here’s a little treat I got from the facility.” She smiled once again, handing him a pretty large brownie.

“Thanks.” Jisung received it gratefully, offering her the other half while she refused.

“Listen, they’re going to advance your training, and your next mentor is far harsher than this one. Just behave the same as you are, just a little tougher. This guy is notorious for not tolerating any type of struggle or emotion, and the consequences are quite..” She stilled, not wanting to continue further. “If you find an opening or a way to escape, don’t hesitate. I’ll help you, and so will some others.”

“What if it involves destruction?” Jisung asked, brownie stuffed in his cheeks.

“Then so be it, don’t you think we’re more than capable of escaping?” She chuckled, wiping the crumbs off his face. “My name’s Jihyo, and if you do manage to escape, in the far west where the sun sets, there should be a few packs of wolves, one of which I am acquainted with. His name is Chan, and he will take care of you much better than I can. Tell him I sent you, and he won’t hesitate to help.” She was whispering all the information, and Jisung made sure to remember every word she mentioned. “I’ve got to go. Take care, Jisung.” She smiled, patting his head and making her way out of his room.

Jisung finished his brownie quickly, afraid someone on patrol might take it away. In all honesty, he had actually been trying to formulate a plan to escape, it was obvious the facility somehow trusted him, they didn't even bother to lock his room’s door anymore. He didn’t want to abuse their trust just yet, so before all hell breaks loose, he wants to be the best he could be for them. He fell asleep trying to formulate his plan, and the next thing he knew the same alarm that had been blaring in his ears for the past 17 years had woken him up again. He immediately sensed another unfamiliar presence in the room and sat up right, eyeing the entire space before him. A shift in the air to his right and he managed to catch the small blade thrown at him.

“Quite alert, huh.” The man revealed himself, he had to be another vampire. “Not a lot of others can sense my stealth.” He smiled, walking towards the front of the room, eyeing Jisung from head to toe.

“I’ve been trained quite well in this facility, sir.” He bowed, maintaining his composure.

“I expect no less. However, you’re still part werewolf, and do you know what’s always been the main weakness of a werewolf?” The man asked, shaking his head in disapproval.

“Their stubbornness?” Jisung asked innocently, he hadn’t been well informed in this area of his studies.

“Good one, but you’re half wrong. It’s their bonds. They’re always looking for a mate– a pack, without one they’re useless. They say their bond strengthens them, but once you learn how to manipulate it, they’re nothing but rabid mutts.” The man tsked, walking closer towards Jisung. “From what I’ve heard, the facility isn’t quite sure if you’re able to be part of these packs or bonds, but I say you should never try, for you, it’s nothing but a weakness– an opening.” The man grabbed his chin, looking into his eyes. “If my sister didn’t fall for that disgusting mutt of a father, she would be alive to this day. But we wouldn’t have such a spectacular subject like you.” He leaned in, seemingly trying to inspect and smell some parts of his body. Jisung remained deathly still, a little bewildered at his sudden actions. “I believe their assumptions are right, you’re an omega, somehow.”

“Is that possible?” Jisung wondered, he believed that he didn’t really possess a subgender, but how could a vampire like him be so sure?

“Of course, you’re still 50%.” He stated, his cold hands feeling Jisung’s abdomen. “No womb though, truly 50% after all.” The man rose to his feet, walking away in long strides and signalled Jisung to follow him.

He was leading him to the training facility, and Jisung was glad it wasn’t the laboratory. He wondered what more training he had to do with his magical ability, they hadn’t covered much of his werewolf side yet.

“I believe, with your power, we can enter the realm of teleportation. Treat your mind as a chamber of possibility, you are the living embodiment of making the impossible possible with just a bit of practice.” The man halted abruptly and turned around, facing Jisung. “Close your eyes, relax and spread out, and imagine yourself in the training room. Focus your energy there and i a sudden burst of power, you should be able to teleport just fine.”

Jisung sighed as he obeyed his orders, envisioning the training room in his mind and concentrating his energy…

When he felt the ground beneath his feet he opened his eyes, and there he was in the training room alongside his mentor.

“You’re lucky you inherited my sister's amazing gifts.” He smirked, pacing beside him. “However, you can only teleport to the areas you’re very familiar with, for now. I believe you were born in this facility so..” Don’t even think about teleporting your way out goes unsaid, but nonetheless both heard it anyway.

The rest of the day goes on with grueling training, and the way he had taught Jisung was by duelling, and it gave Jisung his all. His mentor landed a lot of nasty bruises and gashes on his already scarred skin, he only managed to leave his coach with slightly heavier breaths. His coach complemented Jisung’s strength, and he knew he could grow far stronger than the vampire himself. Despite the recognition, the moment Jisung’s face fell in slight agony after a specifically harsh hit, he had hit him a dozen more times with the same strength until his face did not show any array of emotion.

And that’s how the rest of the week went, gruel training, more chemicals, and small sweet treats from Jihyo. Despite not really knowing what day of the year it is, he knew that tomorrow marked the day of their evacuation drills. Jisung had been learning more than his mentor thought, ever since the first session, even without his mentor there– he would explore the different ways he could use his magic, and even he was surprised by his own abilities. However, he also began to realize that using a lot of his magic involved more drawbacks, he knew the migraines were a thing, but he was still surprised when he had his first nose bleed. It had happened in the middle of the night, and Jisung was practicing to conjure different types of matters when he felt a sharp pain in the side of his head, causing him to flinch as he slowly started to feel the blood drip out of his nose. It took a while for it to go away, and the next thing he knew his vision was starting to darken around the edges. When he woke up, the sharp smell of disinfectant had clogged his nose while the bright lights had caused him to squint, and he immediately knew he was in the infirmary. He had an IV drip on and the only thing present in the room was the nurse, who was taking note of his condition.

“You passed out due to magic exhaustion, try these meds for the next month to see if your symptoms improve.” She noted in a monotone way, handing Jisung the small bottle of pills.

“What are they?” Jisung asked, opening the cap to see some golden capsules with an herbal smell.

“Well the list of ingredients are listed on the side, but that should work by slowly building your stamina in a magical sense, this caters only to your specific dna and it should be fine if you take it methodically– which is increasing the dosage every month. If you forget a lot of things very easily we can also just do the way we do it in the labs.” She shrugged, looking at the boy with a you know what look.

“I prefer these, thanks. Do I take them after breakfast?” Jisung asked simply.

“Yes, and be sure to never miss these. If you do, the drawbacks could be painful. If you don’t take them your lifestyle will be the same way, however it may be much worse if you keep pushing your boundaries like that.” She explained, walking away after observing Jisung’s silence.

In Jisung’s mind, he is certainly considering not taking these pills, it would be incredibly difficult to maintain these forever. Once Jisung is out of here, he will for sure not be using his magic as much anyway.

“Just rip it out and go if you feel fine already.” He heard her voice mumble from her desk.

Jisung decided to lie back and breathe in the antiseptics once again, taking this moment to take a breather.

Present Day

Today was the day of evacuation drills, and Jisung was starting to feel a little nervous. There were many things he did not know about this facility, and if his plan fails, who knew what they could do to him. Once the alarm rang, he drew in a long breath and concentrated his energy on teleporting to the highest floor, something he had only seen once in the past. When he heard the shuffling move past to the floor below him, he took it as a signal to finally teleport. Even though they were powerful beings, it did not exempt them from having some traditional rules which included this one, but he knew if an actual evacuation were to happen, it wouldn’t happen like this. Pleased to find the room empty, he quickly released gas from the tip of his finger, engulfing the entire floor with a layer of gas. Once he believed the gas had sufficed, he engulfed himself in some sort of water bubble and held his breath, silently praying that it was going to work. With a swift movement, he moved his hand out of the bubble and created sparks of energy in his palm, the gas reacting quickly and producing short bursts of fire. It was spreading quickly, and Jisung watched as a bright orange engulfed the floor. He watched as the edges of his bubble slowly began evaporating, and Jisung quickly moved his way to the wall, feeling the material and focusing his energy in making the wall burst, which did so a few seconds later. For a split second, he watched them panic below, watching the building be engulfed in flames. For a short moment, he smiled– feeling genuine relief. He created a small platform with broken cement and this time focused his energy on making himself invisible– a trick he had learned by himself. He was pleased to see that the cement was no longer visible as well, slowly lowering himself to the ground. He landed in the middle of Jihyo’s group, and Jihyo looked over her shoulder and nodded, acknowledging his presence despite not being seen. He was sure that some of them would be able to detect him anyway, so while her group shielded him, he made a run for it. He shifted to his wolf form and ran as fast as he could, breathing in the lush green forest and smiling as his eyes landed on the setting sun.

He was free, at last.
