Chapter Text
The bell above the door jingled softly as Lorelai Gilmore stepped into Luke’s Diner, a quiet bubble in the usual hum of Stars Hollow’s busy Saturday morning. A somewhat tired looking teenager was sitting on her usual stool right beside her father. The teenager smiled widely as she saw Lorelai walking in.
-3... 2... 1... -The teenager whispered to herself as she saw Lorelai approach Luke, a cup on her hand
-Please, Luke -said Lorelai. As soon as she got to the counter, Luke heard her and rolled his eyes- Please, please, please
-How many cups have you have this morning? -Luke asked
-None -Lorelai answered quickly, too quickly
-Plus? -Luke asked
-Five, but yours is better -Lorelai said, and the teenager laughed
-You have a problem -Luke said
-Yes, I do -Lorelai said and extended the cup to Luke, who took the cup and served her some coffee
-And you already know that -the teenager told her father, who just rolled his eyes
-She's a Junkie -Luke said to his daughter, as he gave Lorelai her cup of coffee
-Angel, you've got wings, baby -Lorelai said to Luke as she walked away towards her table
-Break's over, kid -Luke told his daughter, the diner's phone rang, and Luke turned around to answer, Luci got up from the stool she was sitting on and went behind the counter to start serving costumers
A couple of minutes later, Luci saw Lorelai walking to the counter again, another cup on her hands
-Dad -Luci said and pointed to Lorelai, Luke rolled his eyes and went to Lorelai, a serious expression on his face
-What? It's not for me. It's for Rory, I swear -Lorelai told Luke
-You're shameless -Luke deadpanned
-Look, Officer Krupke. She's right at that table, right over there- Lorelai said as she put the cup on the counter and turned around to show the table to Luke, but all they could see was a man talking to Rory, same man that had tried to hit on her not less than 2 minutes ago- Ah. He's got quite a pair, this guy -Lorelai said as she shook her head, Luke poured the coffee into the mug- Thanks -she told him before walking back to the table
-Yeah, I've never been through here before -the man was telling Rory, Lorelai put herself in between Lorelai and the man
-Oh, you have, too -Lorelai said
-Oh, hi -the guy said as he saw Lorelai
-Oh, hi -she copied him- you really like my table, don't you? -Lorelai ask him, in that moment Luci sat by Rory
-I was just, uh... -the guy started to say
-Getting to know my daughters -Lorelai cut him
-Your...
-Are you our new daddy? -Rory and Luci asked, at the same time
-Wow. You do not look old enough to have a daughter -the guy said to Lorelai- No, I mean it. And you do not look like a daughter -he said now to Rory- or you -he added looking at Luci
-That's possibly very sweet of you. Thanks. -Lorelai said, begging to feel annoyed
-So... Daughters -the guy said pointing at Rory and Luci, Lorelai just nodded- You know, I am traveling with my friends -he said pointing to a couple of guys sitting by the counter
In that moment, Luci saw Luke looking at them, raised eyebrows and folded arms, he was ready to kick someone out the diner
-They're fifteen -Lorelai smiled at the guy, now completely annoyed
-By... -the guy began to panic but Luke interrupted
-Out! The three of you! -Luke yelled as he kicked the three men out of the diner
-Drive safe! -Lorelai yelled as the three men ran out of the diner. Rory, Luci and Lorelai burst out laughing

As Lorelai was working -at the independence inn- both Rory and Luci walked in, smile on their faces and big backpacks on their shoulders, both girls approached the front desk as Lorelai was speaking on the phone, Michel by her side, going through some papers
-Hi, Marco, Lorelai. Talk to me about room four- she spoke to the phone- what was wrong with it? -both girls approached Lorelai and kissed each one of her cheeks- uh-huh? I thought you replaced that already -Lorelai keep talking, Rory walked behind the desk and looked for something, Luci by her side- Well, because you told me you did and I never forget anything. So this one's on you, right? -Michel looked at the teenage girls and stopped looking at the papers- Pleasure doing business with you -Lorelai cut the call
-What are your offspring and the diner's man offspring doing? -Michel asked
-We need stamps. Can we have theses? -Rory said as she and Luci found some stamps
-No -Michel said but was completely ignored by the three women
-Take them -Lorelai smiled at the girls- what's with the muumuu? -Lorelai asked Rory, pointing at her daughter's outfit
-Stop it -Rory said, as Luci had already been giving her a hard time about the sweater she was wearing
-Im just saying, you couldn't find one made of metal in case anyone one has X-ray eyes? -Lorelai continued
-And now we say goodbye -Rory said, and started to walk away
-Hey, have Michel look at your French paper before you go -Lorelai told the girls
-Excuse me? -Michel murmured
-That's be great -Rory said
-No -Michel deadpanned
-Come on, Michel -Luci said
-We'll tell all the ladies what a stud you are -Rory said
-Hm. I believe that memo has already been sent -Michel told Rory
-Oh, please, Michel -Lorelai started, with a fake french accent- Pretty please with sucre on top. I will stop talking like this
-Leave them. I'll look at them if I get a chance -Michel finally caved
-It's due tomorrow. And pay special attention to the grammar -Rory said, smiling
-Same, thanks Michel! Owe you a Celine Dion CD! -Luci said as she walked away with Rory. Lorelai smiled at the girls and then looked at Michel, smile still on her face
-I despise you -Michel said
-Hm -Lorelai laughed

-When are you going to let your parents know that you listen to the evil rock music? -Luci asked Lane as they +Rory walked towards the school- You're an American teenager, for God's sake
-Luci, if my parents still get upset over the obscene portion size of American food, I seriously doubt I'm gonna make any inroads with Eminem -Lane said as she finished to put on an extra shirt and accepted her jacket for Rory- I have to go to that -Lane added as they stop in front of an add
-The hayride? -Rory asked- You're kidding
-My parents set me up with the son of a business associate -Lane said as she took her backpack from Luci's hands- He's gonna be a doctor
-How old is he? -Luci asked
-Sixteen -Lane replied
-So he's gonna be a doctor in a hundred years -Rory said
-Well, my parents like to plan ahead -Lane said
-God, you have to go to the hayride with him? -Rory asked
-and his older brother -Lane added
-Oh, now you're kidding -Luci said, wanting to laugh
-Koreans never joke about future doctors -Lane said, seriously
-So, I guess you're not going, huh? -Lane asked the girls
-No, I'm still fuzzy on what's fun about sitting in the cold for two hours with some sticks
up your butt -Rory said and Luci nodded along
-Don't expect me to clear it up for you -Lane told them as they walked into the school

After school, Rory, Luci and Lane walked together to Lane's house
-Was it a good color at least? -Lane asked Rory, as the Gilmore girl had told them about some girl painting their nails in the middle of class
-It had sparklers in it -Rory said
-Wow -Luci mumbled
-And it smelled like bubble gum when it dried -Rory added, as they walked passed the 'Kim's Antiques' sign in Lane's front jard
-Oh, well, there's no way Mark Twain can compete with that -Lane said as she opened the door to her house- Mom, we're home! -they waited for a second- Did you hear something? -Lane asked Rory and Luci
-I'm not sure -Luci said as they walked inside
-Mom? Are you here? -Lane asked
-We're open. Everything's half off! -was heard in the distance, Mrs. Kim was home
-We have contact -Rory said
-Mom?
-Lane?
-Mom?
-Lane?
-Mom, where are you? -Lane asked as the three girl walked around the endless and confusing halls of the house, full of furniture and clutter
-Lane, where are you? -Mrs Kim's asked
-Back here! -Lane answered
-Over here! -Mrs Kim's said
-I think she's that way -Rory pointed towards another room and they all walk towards it
-Are we closer? -Lane asked
-I'm by the table! -Mrs Kim's said, Luci looked around, she could see at least 6 tables in that room alone
-She's kidding, right? -Luci asked
-Look, we'll meet you in the kitchen! -Lane yelled so her mother could hear
-What? -Mrs Kim asked
-The Kitchen! -Rory yelled
-Who's that?
-It's Rory, Mom -Lane said
-Oh -Mrs Kim said, obvious disappointed in her voice
-Wow, I could hear the disappointment from here -Rory said
-Come on. Stop it.-Lane said looking at Rory
-It sucks that after all these years your mom still hates me
-She doesn't hate you
-She hates my mother -Rory said, matter-of-factly
-And my dad -Luci added
-She doesn't trust unmarried women, or single fathers -Lane told them
-You're unmarried -Rory said
-I'm hay riding with a future proctologist. I have potential -Lane told Rory
-Go upstairs. Tea is ready -Mrs Kim said as soon as she saw the girl on the kitchen door- I have muffins with no dairy, no sugar, no wheat. Have to soak them in tea to make the soft to bite but they're very healthy -Mrs Kim said, Luci just looked at her and thought "and people think my dad is a health nut" but kept quiet- So, how was school? None of the girls get pregnant, drop out?
-Not that we know of -Lane said, Luci nodded
-Come to think of it, Joanna Posner was glowing a little -Rory joked
-What? -Mrs Kim asked quickly
-Nothing! She's just kidding! -Lane and Luci said
-Boys don't like funny girls -Mrs Kim told Rory, but was quickly distracted by someone entering the house
-So... We eating or what? -Luci asked the girls

Lorelai ran into the kitchen of the Inn, two letters in her hands
-Sookie! -she said with a big smile on her face- they're here! It happened! They did it!
-Okay, I'm gonna need a little big longer sentences -Sookie said, a smile on her face too
-The Chilton school, Rory and Luci got in!
-Oh my God! Oh my God!
-I know! Look! "Dear Ms. Gilmore. We're happy to inform you that we have a vacancy at Chilton Preparatory starting immediately due to your daughter's excellent credentials and your enthusiasm pursuit of her enrollment. We'll be happy to accept her. Once the first semester's tuition has been received" -Lorelai read Rory's acceptance letter first, then change to the second one- "Dear Mr. Danes. We're happy to inform you that we have a vacancy at Chilton Preparatory starting immediately due to your daughter's excellent credentials and your enthusiasm pursuit of her enrollment. We'll be happy to accept her. Once the first semester's tuition has been received"
-This is very exciting! -Sookie clapped as she and Lorelai hugged, really excited
-This is it! Rory can finally go to Harvard, like she always wanted, and get the education I couldn't, get to do all the things I never got to do, and then I can resent her for it and we can finally have a normal mother-daughter relationship -Lorelai laughed along with Sookie
-Mom? -Rory asked as she walked into the kitchen, seen her mother and Sookie chuckling like crazy- you're happy
-Yeah -Lorelai said, a big smile on her face
-Did you do something slutty?
-I'm not that happy -Lorelai replied, still chuckling with Sookie- Here -she said as she have a gift bag to Rory
-What's going on? -Rory asked, genuinely confused at her mother's actitud
-Open it! -Lorelai said pointing to the bag
-I'm gonna be in a Britney Spears vídeo? -Rory asked as soon as she saw the blue plaid skirt that Lorelai had given her
-You're going to Chilton! -Sookie burst, not even giving Lorelai the opportunity to say it- oh, sorry
-Mom? -Rory asked Lorelai, not really believing what Sookie was saying
-You did it, babe. You got in -Lorelai told Rory, pride all over her face
-How did this happen? -Rory asked, still amazed- You didn't, with the principal, did you?
-No, honey, that was a joke. They have two open spots. You're gonna start on Monday -Lorelai explained
-Really?
-Really!
-I don't believe this. Oh my God, I'm going to Chilton! -Rory said, starting to realize that she really was going to attend Chilton, she hugged Lorelai- Sookie, I'm going to Chilton! -Rory said as she hugged Sookie- wait, mom, what about Luci?! -Rory panicked
Rory and Luci had dreamed about attending Chilton together since they were 12 years old, around the same time they decide they wanted to go to Harvard
Lorelai smiled at Rory and waved both letters in front of her daughter's face
-She got in! I'll call Luke right now, sweets, but you and Luci are going to Chilton!
-WE'RE GOING TO CHILTON! -Rory screamed as she jumped
-I'm making cookies! -Sookie said
-I have to call Lane! -Rory said as she run out of the kitchen, but she stopped for a moment, turned around and hugged Lorelai- I love you, mom
-I love you too, sweets!

The ring of the Diner's phone was loud enough to wake up the dead, specially in the rare lull the diner was experiencing on a Monday afternoon. Luke sighs, sets down a carton of eggs, and grabs the phone from behind the diner counter.
-Yeah? -Luke answers
-Luke! Hey! It’s me. Don’t hang up. -Luke could hear a extremely excited Lorelai at the other end of the phone
-Why would I— What did you do? -Luke questioned
-Nothing! Except call to share AMAZING, LIFE-CHANGING news! Prepare yourself -Lorelai said
-Please don’t say it’s another town meeting about the squirrel unionizing behind Taylor’s market -Luke said as he rolled his eyes, already imagining the situation
-Nope, this is bigger. Much bigger. Monumental. Gilmore-Danes history level -Lorelai said
-Okay… -Luke said, suspicious on how Lorelai was talking
-Luci and Rory got into Chilton! -Lorelai basically screamed
-They what? -Luke asked
-They got in! Our brilliant little overachievers are officially going to Chilton. Uniforms, blazers, private school, terrifying tuition and all! -Lorelai said
-Wait… Luci? My Luci? Chilton? -Luke asked, really surprised by the news
-Yes, your Luci. Though let’s be real, she’s like 50% mine in the emotional parenting department -Lorelai said, rambling a little
-She never even told me she applied -Luke said, a little hurt by the fact his daughter didn't told him she had applied to Chilton, but the pride of her actually her getting in quickly pushed that feeling aside
-She didn’t want to get your hopes up in case it didn’t happen. But it happened. She and Rory are going to be the coolest — and probably most exhausted — girls in that whole building -Lorelai said, smiling big, even if Luke couldn't see her
-She’s really doing this... -Luke murmured
-She is, Luke. She really is... And you should be proud, extremely -Lorelai said
-I am, Lorelai. Thank you -Luke said and cut the call

The diner was unusually quiet for a Monday night. The hum of the fridge and the soft clink of cutlery were the only sounds, blending with the turning of a page as Luci sat at the counter, nose buried in a book, her sneakers swinging lightly off the stool.
Luke stood behind the counter, nervously drying a mug that didn’t need drying — again. He kept glancing toward the back room, where something was hidden beneath his flannel jacket.
He cleared his throat.
-Hey… Kiddo? -Luke said
-Yeah? -Luci looked up, pen still in hand
-Can you come here for a sec? -Luke asked
-What's up? -She frowned, closing the book but leaving her notebook open, mid-sentence -You okay? -Luci asked
-Yeah, yeah, I’m fine- he said, a little too quickly -I just… got something for you
-Like... a surprise? -She blinked, confused.
-Kinda. More like... news. With fabric -He turned, disappeared into the back for a second, and came back holding something carefully folded — a navy blazer, with the Chilton crest embroidered on the front.
Luci’s breath caught.
-You're in -Luke placed it gently on the counter in front of her.
Luci stared at the blazer like it might disappear if she blinked too hard.
-What? -Luci asked
-Chilton, -he said, quieter this time- You got in. Lorelai got the letters today — one for Rory, and one for you. I got this for you.
She reached out, slowly, fingers brushing over the crest. It felt heavy — not just in weight, but in what it meant. In what it said about her future. Her potential. Her worth.
-I got in? -she whispered, not quite daring to believe it.
-You did -Luke’s voice was soft now- You and Rory. Together.
Luci looked up at him, eyes wide and shining.
-Are you serious? I mean... are you sure this isn’t a mistake or—? -Luci asked, still nor sure if this was real or a really horrifying prank her father was making
-Nope. No mistake. I saw the letter. Lorelai cried. Twice -Luke said, completely serious
-I thought I didn’t have a chance -Luci let out a breathy laugh, still stunned. Luke shook his head.
-You’re the smartest person I know, Luci. You earned this. -Luke said, pride on his voice
She picked up the blazer, holding it close like it was made of gold, her voice barely a whisper.
-This is real…-
-It's real! -Luke nodded, smiling faintly
And then, like a wave breaking, Luci launched across the counter and hugged him tightly. Luke stumbled for a second but held her back just as fiercely.
-I love you, -she said into his shoulder- Even when you make me eat salad.
-I love you too, Kiddo. Even when you steal all the pie -He chuckled, resting his chin lightly on the top of her head.
As the diner lights flickered gently above them, Luci held the Chilton blazer to her chest like it was a promise — not just of a better education, but of something she’d quietly craved for years: a future she could shape for herself. She didn’t know what Chilton would bring, or how it might change her, but in that moment — wrapped in her dad’s hug, with the weight of a dream finally in her hands — she knew one thing for sure: this was just the beginning.
