"Jace!" The wooden doors of the Poseidon cabin cracked open, carrying the sound throughout. It rang in the soft corners and breezy walls, the voice a breath of ocean air.
With a book spread before him, and an easy smile caressing his lips, Jason Grace looked up to meet his sea green eyes and olive tinted skin. "Hey baby." He whispered quietly, like Percy was still a treasure to be around.
Like he was in awe.
Percy positions himself on the bed beside his boyfriend, holding up two small boxes. "Want to help me dye my hair?" His eyes twinkle mischievously.
With a laugh he can't help but let escape, Jason eases one of the packages from his grip. "Where did you manage to get this?" He grins, adoring the color.
It's a shimmering blue, the reflecting sea caught in his hand. He can practically see the sunbeams filtering off of them, exposing gentle sands and the cold of water dripping off his sunburnt skin.
Looking up, he finds the same color in Percy's eyes.
It's not his fault for melting into them when he looks at Jason like that . So fond and careful and warm. Like he had personally hung every star in the sky.
He would've, if Percy had asked. He'd do anything as long as those sea green eyes were the ones commanding him.
"With enough bribery, the Hermes Cabin can get you anything." Percy states, legs swinging off the bed as if he couldn't contain his energy.
"Of course." Jason rolled his eyes, a soft scoff echoing from his lips. As he stands, his hand extends to his partner, leading him along to the side of the fountain that possessed most of the space in the room.
The sound of rushing waters caught in his ears, swirling in his brain obsessively, madly. Bright and wild and making every hair on his neck stand up straight. They sat facing each other, knees brushing, hands finding purchase on each other's skin.
Jason read over the box's instructions a few times, pulling out the bottle of bleach and feeling the smooth plastic beneath his fingers. "I think Piper would've been a better choice for this." He murmurs, slipping his hands through dark waves and relishing the texture.
"Maybe. But you're my first choice. Always." Percy states, like it was obvious. Like it had always been true. Sky and sea were never meant to part, only created to slip into each other again, and again, and again, sunset clashing against gentle waters.
He pretends his heart doesn't clench at the mention of being wanted, of being significant for something other than a leader, a strategist. He pretends his voice doesn't crack when he speaks. "Of course. Turn around, babe."
The next half hour is filled with the acidic tang of bleach perfuming the air and singeing their skin. Jason works rhythmically, brushing each section of hair back and carefully swiping the material through, his gloved hands gentle as they brush skin and silky curls. The boy in his hands relaxes into the motions, tilting his head for better access.
Percy's eyes flutter shut, and he releases an easy breath. For a moment, there were no monsters, no imminent threat, no Gods lording over them. For a moment, it was just them. Just two boyfriends, one carding through the other's hair, the second feeling every fleeting touch like a spark.
Tilting his head forward, Jason leans to press a lazy kiss on Percy's spine. "And now we wait."
~ * * * ~
Percy had washed his hair in the fountain, Jason scrubbing soap into his scalp. He looked odd as a blonde, but maybe only because neither was used to it. The wispy golden colour framed his face like a halo, adding to the suspicion that Percy truly was Jason’s angel.
"I'm Jason Grace, Praetor of the SPQR." Percy laughs as he mimics Jason, voice lowered in a poor attempt to match his boyfriend's.
With a snicker, Grace dots a kiss on his forehead. "Being blonde is not my only personality trait, darling." Sharp canines curl into a grin, nose brushing Percy's own. "Let's finish this, yeah?"
Soon enough, Percy's hair was a stunning teal. It was more green than the package had stated, but neither of them seemed to mind. By the end, Jason's hands were a stark blue, both of them laughing at the holes in the gloves.
"We've got half an hour until we need to wash this out. Great colour, Percy. You look gorgeous." Jason states, his eyes never have been softer. It was like looking at Percy surrounded his vision in a comforting light, a feeling so warm he never wanted to leave.
He didn't deserve him.
Scooping the rest of the dye onto his fingers, Jason separates a small fraction of his hair, a gentle curl that always seemed to make its way into his face. He plasters the dye onto his own blonde hair, rubbing at the grains to cement it on.
"What are you doing?" Percy laughed, rough and worn like a wave crashing against rocky shore. It nearly ripped Jason in half, that sound. Rocked his brain like a thunderstorm. That laugh was his. All his.
Jason pulls his boyfriend in for a careful kiss, careful not to smear any teal on his face. Their breath mingles, soft and tangible as it hangs in the air. For a moment, everything is still.
"I'm making sure that everyone knows I'm yours."
