Shine Through The Darkness

Summary:

Haibara and Nanami have their sorcerer grade evaluation that quickly goes wrong. Can Haibara's shining optimism get them out of it unscathed??

Notes:

CW: Implied transphobia (nothing actively written describing it)

This is the only fic in this series where Nanami is trans, unless otherwise stated

Work Text:

Rank evaluations were typically done by staff, but when you have two recently graduated special grade sorcerers just sitting around, why not capitalize on that?? Although Yu knew that his classmate would’ve taken someone else in a heartbeat. This was their grade 1 evaluation, meaning if they passed, they’d officially become grade 1 sorcerers, even though Yu’s classmate technically should’ve already been upgraded to one. For some reason, Nanami had decided that he wanted to wait for Yu to be approved for his upgrade so that the two could advance together. And though it had taken the brunette an extra semester to get there due to being set back after a mission gone wrong, here they were standing in front of the site of their exam

“Look at how far our precious kouhais have come, Suguru. It seems like only yesterday they were newbie grade 3 sorcerers, and now they’re testing to be grade 1”

“Oh my god I hate you-”

The four of them stood outside an abandoned building that had become a gathering spot for local teens seeking to test their courage. Urban legend said it used to be a sanatorium and was now haunted by the spirits of patients who had been tortured to death, so teens dared each other to sneak onto the property at night. It’d often turn into nights of tragedy, adding to the overall negative energy of the building, turning it into a cesspool for cursed activity. It was the perfect place to host a sorcerer exam

“Come on Nanamin, they’re just here to make sure that nothing goes wrong and support us.” Yu smiled, clapping the blonde sorcerer on the back. “We don’t need their help or commentary.” Nanami sighed, likely just wanting to get this over with. “Or more specifically, Gojo’s commentary,” he added

“Oh come on Nanamin, I’m just being a good senpai!!” the sorcerer with white hair said, lowering his shades to bat his lashes at the blonde. That just served in making him more ticked off, but thankfully the other special-grade stepped in before things could get violent “Alright that’s enough from both of you” Getou sighed, putting himself in between the two “We shouldn’t be going into a place like this at each other’s throats” Nanami just muttered something to himself but backed down

“So what’re we looking at??” Yu asked, “How many curses of each grade??”

“Based on the report, 5 second grade and three first grade,” Getou answered, “Scattered throughout the whole building. Satoru and I will stay in the main atrium to keep an eye on things”

“Sounds like a plan,” Yu nodded before returning his attention to his classmate. “There're three floors, so do you and I each wanna take one of the upper ones and end together on the bottom??” he offered. Nanami nodded as he unsheathed his weapon “Do you want the second or third??” he asked as Yu shook out his hands “I think it’ll be a much safer bet for me to take the second” he said, tapping his forearm crutch against the ground- He’d made sure to store up enough cursed energy to last him the whole exam, though wasn’t yet strong enough to move without aid quite yet- “Good with me” the blonde confirmed “Well then, shall we??”

They didn’t know the distribution of curses throughout the building, but once they reconvened on the first floor, they’d update each other on what they managed to exercise and go from there. Yu made his way to the second floor, checking the main hall from the stairway for any residuals. He could see a small trail leading towards the reception desk, which he followed, catching a small second-grade off guard before it could get the jump on him. It was a quick exorcism, and Yu continued further down the hall, looking for the next residual trail to follow. 20 minutes later, he had exercised another second-grade curse just as he received a call from Nanami

How’s it going down there Yu??

“Going good so far. Exercised two second-grades”

The two had also planned to make check-ins with each other every 20 minutes, not just to check on each other but also to keep an eye on whether they were able to get any signal. It’d make it easy to notice if they somehow fell into a curse’s domain

I’ve exercised one first grade up here. That leaves 3 second grade and two first grade, ” Nanami said

“Alright, check in with you again in 20,” Yu replied before hanging up and stowing away his phone. If they continued at this rate, then they’d surely be done before an hour

20 minutes and one exorcism of a first-grade curse later, Yu was calling his classmate again for another check

“I got another first grade down here. That should leave one more left unless you got it”

No, just two small second grades. That leaves one of each

“Should we reconvene on the first floor then??”

I think that’s the best option now. I’ll see you down there Yu

“See ya in a sec!!”

Yu began to make his way back to the first floor, but when he exited the stairwell, he was a bit confused to find that he was the only one in the atrium. He was sure Nanami would’ve gotten here before him since he could move down the stairs much faster, but even more concerning than that was the fact that neither Gojo nor Getou were there. He knew his senpai tended to warp around to get food whenever he wasn’t doing anything, but even Gojo was smart enough to not leave in the middle of overseeing an exam. Besides, Getou certainly wasn’t the type to engage in that behavior

“Hello??” Yu called “Senpais?? Nanamin??” He pursed his lips as he grabbed his phone, dialing Nanami’s number but not getting through. Shit… had he stumbled into a domain without realizing it??

His surroundings looked the same, though; maybe the signal was just down in the area. Yu put his phone away again, checking the area for residuals but still seeing nothing. Had Nanami already exercised the last curses and left with the others?? Yu checked the main doors but found them locked, confirming that he most likely was in some sort of domain. This had to be the work of the first-grade curse, which meant it was, in fact, on this floor. So, had the others also been caught in it, or was it just him??

Haibara

Yu looked over his shoulder and found himself face to face with Getou. “Oh, hey Getou-san!! I was wondering where everyone else went, have you seen them??” the brunette asked as he turned around fully

They left

“Huh?? Does that mean we’re done with the exam??” Yu asked, “But the door is locked”

I just came to say goodbye

Yu felt like his senpai’s voice was reverberating directly in his head and constricting his heart, and he gave the older student an odd look. “Goodbye??” he asked. “Where are you going??”

We can’t let you hold us back anymore

… huh??

His senpai would never say that

“Senpai, are you alright??” Yu asked, “Is this part of the test??”

You’re weak. Useless. You don’t belong at our side

Yu just pursed his lips. Whatever this thing was, it was undoubtedly not the Getou he knew. He would never say such cruel things

“I don’t know who you are or what you’ve done with the real Getou-senpai, but give him back!!” Yu called as he bunched his free hand into a fist

Are you that naive, Yu?? Have you really not heard what people say??

“No… but that’s because no one says anything. And now you’re starting to get on my nerves, I know you’re not Suguru!!” Yu allowed his cursed energy to flow through his fist, but it seemed the moment he did so, the thing that had been using Getou’s image sprang for him. “Hah!! Knew it,” Yu smirked proudly as he blocked the attack. “Time to get rid of you now”

Even though Yu knew he wasn’t actually hurting Getou, he still felt bad for punching his image in the stomach, especially when it caused him to cough up purplish blood. But that was just the final confirmation he needed to know that this was the curse responsible for trapping him in the domain

Yu shook out his hand as he watched the curse revert back to its normal form before dissipating

Well, that was easy

Hopefully, now he could find the others and they could get out of here

Except as he looked around, Yu realized that he was still alone in the atrium, and when he tried the doors, they were still locked

“What the-” he muttered to himself before pulling out his phone to check for a signal. “Still nothing?? But I could’ve sworn I exercised it,” he huffed. That should’ve broken the domain, so what the hell was going on?? Yu decided to do what he was going to do before the curse appeared- search for everyone else to see what the hell was going on and come up with a way to get out

“Senpais!! Nanamin!! Where are you guys?!”

Was it possible the others were having similar encounters to the one he’d just had?? But still, Yu knew he had exercised the curse, so even if they had been, they should be alright now. There were only two curses left in the building, and he doubted a second-grade could produce such an advanced technique

“Senpaiiiiiiiis!! Come on, this isn’t funny anymore!!”

As Yu wandered around, he caught a trail of familiar residuals leading down one of the branching halls, and he stopped. “Getou-san!!” he called repeatedly as he followed the trail. Eventually, Yu was able to sense another source of cursed energy separate from Getou’s, and he paused. So there was another curse… but surely his senpai would’ve exercised it by now, right?? He heard what sounded like crashing, and Yu realized it was coming from one of the abandoned rooms, so he snuck over to take a look

The room was dark, but Yu could make out the form of someone wildly swinging at the air. Cursed energy poured from the figure, but it wasn’t directed at anything, and instead, it seemingly just vanished into the darkness. Yu risked a closer look, realizing that the person in the room was Getou, and his eyes widened

“Getou-san?!” He called, standing in the doorway of the room and looking for a light switch. The raven-haired sorcerer snapped his head in Yu’s direction, allowing him to see blacked-out eyes that made him shiver

“Get away from me!!” he cried, in a voice full of fear that Yu had never heard from him before. “Haven’t you done enough?!”

“Huh?? Senpai, it’s me,” Yu called. “It’s Yu, can you not see me??”

“Stop it!! Stop showing it to me!!” Getou tugged at his hair anxiously, pulling it from its neat bun. His cursed energy began to leak out in increasing volume, and Yu began to get a sense of what was going on. He could work through the details later; right now, he just needed his senpai back

“I’m sorry, Getou-san,” he said, “But it’s for the best.” Yu dashed into the room, dodging Getou’s wild attempts to claw at the air. He ducked under Getou’s arms, one hand going to grab his shoulder and the other using his crutch as a brace to keep him from backing up. “Sorry again!!” he said before bringing his head forward in a strong headbutt that had his brain rattling around in his skull. Getou let out a choked gasp, eyes clearing as a curse let out a horrid screech. It dropped dead to the floor in between the two, a large wound in its head oozing blood until it vanished

“What… Yu-chan??” Getou asked, his eyes back to normal and violet irises shining with worry, “Are you alright?? What happened??”

“Don’t worry, I’m all good,” Yu said with a bright smile. “What about you??”

“My head hurts like a bitch, but other than that, I think I’m ok,” he said, stepping back to rub his forehead. “What the hell happened?? Where are we even?”

“I’m not 100% sure yet, but I think there’s an unregistered curse that’s got us all trapped within a domain,” Yu explained. “I think it’s trying to get into our heads and force us to drain our cursed energy. Did you see something or someone??”

“Yeah… that bastard that killed Riko… I don’t know what came over me, just hearing his voice made me freeze up.” Getou sighed, “Kept seeing her too”

“So that means I’m probably right then,” Yu nodded. “Sorry you had to go through all that again”

“It’s alright,” Getou said, “But what about you?? How are you here??”

“Oh, it tried showing me a vision of you saying that you and the others didn’t need me anymore. It was pretty easy to see through it,” Yu laughed. “I trust you guys and know you’d never actually say that”

“Well, I’m glad you saw through that,” Getou replied. “So I’m guessing Satoru and Nanami are stuck in a similar situation??”

“Most likely,” Yu confirmed, “We need to find and free them”

“Satoru will most likely be able to handle himself, so I’ll look for Nanami while you find Satoru,” Getou said. “Is there any service??”

“Unfortunately not,” Yu answered. “Should we meet up in the main atrium in say… 10 minutes??”

“Sounds good to me,” Getou nodded. “Good luck, Yu, though I doubt you’ll need it”

“Same to you, Senpai,” Yu smiled before leaving the room to search for the other special-grade sorcerer

Yu found Gojo in another abandoned room, staring blankly ahead at a wall, an arm outstretched and a hand positioned as if he were about to attack something. The room was filled with his cursed energy, freezing Yu in the doorway. It’d be bad if the curse were absorbing the cursed energy they were leaking, especially with how much Gojo had

“Gojo-senpai??” Haibara called, “Can you hear me??”

Gojo just kept staring ahead, and when Yu tried to enter the room, he ran into the sorcerer’s infinity. “Gojo-san!!” he called again, “Please, can you hear me?!”

He still got no response, and Yu tried beating on the barrier keeping him out. He needed a way to snap his senpai out of it long enough for him to get in and kill the curse that was manipulating him

“Oh no, Gojo-san!!” Haibara called, “Getou-senpai is in danger!!”

He immediately felt infinity dissipating as the special-grade sorcerer gasped. Yu took the moment to dash in, focusing on the foreign cursed energy that was on his shoulder. He grabbed at the space, hand closing around a bulbous mass which he tore off and flung into the wall. Gojo shuddered, pushing his shades up onto his forehead

“Huh?? What-”

“You ok senpai??” Yu asked before making sure the curse was actually dead

“Haibara?? What happened?? Where’s Suguru??” Gojo asked worriedly, eyes darting around the room

“Oh, he’s ok,” Yu answered as he watched the curse disappear. “He’s looking for Nanamin right now. I just said that to try to snap you out of it. I’m glad it worked, though”

“Oh, thank god,” Gojo sighed as he adjusted his sunglasses. “Do you know how long I was out for??”

“Not really,” Yu admitted with a shrug. “I first noticed we were stuck in some weird domain when I tried meeting back up with Kento. It’s been about 5 minutes since I found Getou-senpai. We made a plan to try to meet in the atrium in 10”

“Should we head there and wait for them??” Gojo asked before checking his phone, “Oh wait, I have a signal”

“Wait, really??” Yu asked, “That means Getou-san probably got rid of the main curse. I’m sure he and Nanamin are waiting for us then”

“Let me call him,” Gojo said as he dialed the sorcerer’s number

The phone continued ringing before going to voicemail, and Gojo pursed his lips before trying again. This time, the call went through, and Getou’s worried voice came through

Satoru?? Are you and Yu-chan ok??

“Yeah, we’re all good, heading for the main atrium. I’m guessing Nanamin is with you??” Gojo responded as he and Haibara began walking

Yes, but we have a problem. I must’ve been too late finding him, he’s unconscious and burning up

“He’s what??” Gojo asked, and Yu gave his senior a worried look as he hadn’t heard what Getou had said

I don’t know, but we need to get him to Shoko. Although I worry that this isn’t something RCT can easily fix since the curse used psychological attacks meant to drain cursed energy

“Shit- we’re on our way,” Gojo replied, signaling to Yu to hurry up

“What’s going on??” he asked as the two sped up a bit, with Haibara doing his best with his crutch. “Nanami’s not doing too well, apparently. Suguru thinks the curse really got to him.” Gojo replied

“What?!” Yu asked worriedly. He tried thinking of something that would affect the blonde so much, but it was hard to get an accurate read of just how dark the curse could go. He should’ve gone after Nanami first, considering he’d gotten himself and Getou to safety

No time to dwell on the “what-ifs” now, though. The most important thing was finding out how to get Nanami back to normal

The two burst into the atrium to find Getou carrying Nanami bridal-style. Haibara made a beeline for them to check on his classmate, “Nanamin?? Can you hear me??” he put his hand on his forehead, immediately drawing it back when he felt how warm the blonde was. “You weren’t kidding, Getou-san”

“Do you think it’ll be safe for him to warp??” Gojo asked, “It’ll be the fastest way to get back.”

“I think so,” Getou replied. “But do you feel up for it, Satoru?”

“I’ll be fine,” he said, “I can just take a power nap once we get Nanamin situated with Shoko”

With that, the three linked up, with Nanami still in Getou’s arms, and warped through time and space to the infirmary at Jujutsu Tech

“GAH-!! Jesus Christ… I can’t believe I haven’t gotten used to that”

“Sorry Shoko, it was important though,” Getou apologized

Yu took his classmate from Getou, knowing that he was more susceptible to Gojo’s warping. The raven-haired sorcerer gave him a quiet thanks before finding a place to sit. Shoko took the lollipop stick she’d been chewing on and tossed it into the trash, eyeing the two students

“So what’s up??”

“We’re not a hundred percent sure,” Yu admitted. “There was a curse that used psychological attacks to get us to drain our cursed energy. By the time we found Nanamin, he was already unconscious. He’s burning up, too”

“Hopefully it’s just CT exhaustion,” Shoko replied, nodding her head for Yu to follow her as she moved to help support the unconscious blonde. “Suguru, if you’re steady, can you make sure Satoru doesn’t pass out?? Lord knows what’s been on this floor”

Suguru stood with a nod, catching the white-haired man with an arm around his waist just as his knees buckled. “You two rest up, I’ll call if anything happens!!” Haibara called before letting the healer lead them

“So, define psychological attacks,” she asked as she led them to the examination room. “It was different for all four of us,” Yu explained. “It showed me Getou-senpai trying to say he and the others were gonna leave me. And he saw the girl from Okinawa and her killer”

“So not fun,” Shoko replied, and Yu nodded, “Not fun,” he confirmed

Eventually, they arrived at the examination room, and Yu carefully laid his classmate down with the help of Shoko. The blonde was breathing shallowly, and Shoko grabbed a nearby towel to mop up his brow. “He definitely is low on CT,” she said. “Were any of you physically attacked??”

“I was cause I engaged the curse,” Yu said. “But I wasn’t hurt,” he quickly added when the healer looked at him. “Well, for now it’s best if he rests,” she said, “Hopefully his fever will go down soon too”

“That’s good to hear,” Yu sighed with relief. “Can you let me know if his condition changes and I’m not here??”

“Yeah, no problem,” Shoko agreed. “I’ll let you know”

It was just supposed to be a regular rank evaluation… But now Yu’s classmate was unconscious, and they didn’t know when he’d wake up. He just hoped that everything would be ok when he woke up, and that they could both be upgraded to grade 1 sorcerers

“Gojo-san?? Is everything ok??”

Yu-chan, are you still on your mission??

“Uhh yeah… but I’m pretty much done. Is everything ok??”

Before Haibara could hear back from his senior, the man appeared in front of him, and he jumped. “Senpai?!” He asked

“I’ll explain when we get back,” the special-grade said before putting a hand on his kouhai. Yu shut his mouth when he felt his body warping through time, taking a moment once they’d arrived at their destination to gather himself again. “Senpai, you’re worrying me,” Yu said, realizing that he was in the infirmary again. Not only that, but Getou was there, and it looked like he’d been nervously pacing. He looked up when he heard the brunette, taking over to let his partner rest after warping

“Sorry for the suddenness,” he said, putting a hand on Yu’s back to guide him somewhere. “But Nanami woke up, and we have a situation”

“What happened??” Yu asked, “Is he ok??”

“I wish I could say so,” the raven-haired sorcerer replied. “Satoru and I went to see him when Ieiri told us he’d woken up. But he panicked as soon as he saw us. Shoko tried getting him to speak, but apparently he just went catatonic after we left”

“What??” Yu’s eyes widened in shock and worry. “Yeah,” Getou sighed. “We figured if anyone could get him to talk, it’d be you. We think it has to do with the curse from yesterday”

“Of course I’ll try.” Yu nodded, stopping with his senior right outside the room where he’d left Nanami the day before. “I’ll let you know what’s up,” he added

“Thanks, Yu-chan.” Getou nodded. “And just let Nanami know that we’re ok and want him to be as well”

With that, the special-grade left, and Yu took a deep breath before softly knocking on the door, “Nanamin??” He called as he cracked the door open, “You in there??”

He chanced a peek into the room, finding the blonde curled into himself on the bed, arms wrapped tightly around his knees and clutching a blanket that had been draped over him in place. Yu’s heart ached when he saw the state Nanami was in, quickly entering the room and shutting the door silently behind him

“Nanamin?? It’s me,” he called, and this time the other boy looked up. His olive-colored eyes were flat and red from crying, and it just twisted Yu’s heart even more. “Kento… what happened??”

“Y-Yu…” the blonde choked out, opening his arms in an invitation which Haibara immediately took. He climbed onto the rickety infirmary bed, wrapping Nanami up in his arms and holding him close, not caring that his crutch clattered to the floor. Nanami immediately clung to the brunette, trying not to hyperventilate as he buried his face in his chest

“Hey hey…” Yu cooed, “It’s ok, I’ve got you.” he threaded his fingers through his blonde hair to massage his scalp. “Do you remember what happened yesterday??”

“I-I remember the evaluation… but all of a sudden I saw… I-I saw… I can’t,” Nanami gasped. “I-I know it was probably just a curse… b-but it was so real”

“It’s ok, take your time,” Yu soothed. “It was rough for everyone”

“N-No, you don’t understand!!” the blonde interrupted, tears beginning to well up in his eyes again

“Kento what did you see??” Yu asked “Did you see one of us??”

“I-It… It was Gojo and Getou-senpai… th-they found out about… about me and… they started…” Nanami whimpered, unable to finish his sentence, but Yu was able to get an idea of what he’d seen. “Oh, Kento… I think I understand.” Yu cooed, holding the blonde as tightly as he could

Despite identifying as male, Nanami had been born female, and only a very select few knew. Haibara had known since their first year, and Shoko found out because she had access to the medical files of all Tokyo sorcerers. She hadn’t meant to snoop; it just naturally happened when she was looking through his file while treating him. That meant that of their friends, Gojo and Getou were the only ones who hadn’t been explicitly told. Nanami had been trying to find a time to bring it up, but with everyone being busy, they just didn’t have the time. It seems the curse had conjured an image of their seniors harassing Nanami because of his sex, which explained why he’d freaked out when he saw them when he woke up

“I-It’s just not fair…” the blonde stammered. “I had finally gotten the courage to come out to them after our exam, but then this happened and-” Yu could tell Nanami was beginning to panic again, so he just silently tucked the other boy’s head under his chin and held him close

“I’m really sorry you had to see that Kento… and I know it probably felt so real to you, but it was just a curse. Gojo and Getou-senpai would never do anything like that”

“But how can you be so sure?!” Nanami asked, balling up his fist against the brunette’s chest

“Because they’re good people,” Yu replied. “They were supportive of us when we told them we were together, so I’m sure they’ll understand if you came out to them. I think it could actually help you feel better”

“What?!” Nanami asked, sitting up to stare at Yu with wide, fearful eyes. Yu had never seen Nanami so frazzled before, and as he thought about what to say, he realized something. “Kento… when Getou-senpai found you, you had already passed out. But he never mentioned seeing any cursed spirit”

“What’s that got to do with any of this?!” Nanami was getting more and more worked up, and Yu’s suspicions were confirmed as he could feel his partner’s cursed energy thrumming around him. The curse was never exercised, and it was going to continue leeching off of Nanami’s cursed energy. The only problem was that Yu couldn’t sense the curse itself anywhere

“Kento, you just have to trust me on this,” Yu said, putting his hands on the other boy’s shoulders. “Somehow, the curse is still affecting you, and I don’t think I’ll be able to find it unless you get past this fear”

For a moment, Haibara saw a flash of rationality in Nanami’s eyes, and he knew that deep down, the logical part of his brain was still there and agreed with him. “I promise, nothing bad is going to happen. And on the very, very slim chance that it does, I’ll be right here with you. I know it seems impossible, but hey, we live in a world of impossible. This is nothing compared to what we do on a day-to-day basis”

Nanami was silent as he thought through Yu’s words, and though he was still terrified deep down, he knew his partner was right. “O-Ok,” he eventually sighed, “I trust you… J-Just, promise me that you’ll be here with me”

“Of course I will,” Yu said with a comforting smile. “I’ll always be here”

Not wanting to leave Nanami’s side, he instead texted Getou, telling him to come with Gojo as there was something important they needed to say. Nanami nuzzled against the brunette again, closing his eyes as he tried to steady his breathing. Yu just continued soothing him with a gentle smile, whispering assurances to his partner until they heard a knock at the door

Nanami stiffened up again with a choked whimper, and Yu kissed the top of his head to comfort him before calling for his senpais to enter. Getou entered first, with Gojo right behind him, though both seemed a bit apprehensive still. They must’ve been worried about setting off their kouhai again

“Hey senpais,” Yu called. “Hey, you feeling better, Nanamin??” Gojo asked, “Sorry about earlier.” he added

“It’s fine,” Nanami sighed shakily, “It wasn’t your fault”

“Why’d you call us here?? You said you had something important to say??” Getou asked. Yu gently nudged Nanami, prompting him to speak. Nanami sat up fully, taking Yu’s hand for assurance before sighing

“I… I need to explain something to you two,” he said, and the two special-grade sorcerers nodded, though Yu took note of their looks of worry. “The reason I freaked out when I saw you two was because of what the curse had shown me,” Nanami explained

“We sorta figured,” Gojo shrugged. “Again, we don’t blame you at all”

“That’s not all,” Nanami sighed. “Yu thinks that I’m still being affected by the curse, and the only way to exercise it is to get over the fear brought about by what I saw”

Gojo pushed his shades up, pursing his lips as he scanned the blonde, who shrank under his gaze. “Yeah, your cursed energy is certainly off,” he confirmed before lowering his shades

“Wait, you said get over a fear. You’re not scared of us, are you??” Getou asked worriedly, “Not exactly.” Nanami sighed, “More so, I’m scared of how you’ll react…” Yu squeezed his partner’s hand, giving him a warm smile to encourage him, “You got this,” he whispered. That seemed to relax the blonde, who nodded before turning his attention back to their senpais

“The truth is… I’m transgender”

Getou visibly relaxed, eyes softening as he digested what his kouhai had said. He got a sense of what Nanami had possibly seen and understood why he’d been so scared of them. He just felt awful that the blonde had had to see something so triggering. He hoped that by giving him their assurance and support, it’d help him relax. Plus, he’d be lying if he said he hadn’t entertained the thought of his kouhai being trans before, so he wasn't entirely surprised

“Wait… so does that mean you’re a girl now??” Gojo asked, and his fellow special-grade sorcerer turned to him with wide eyes

“Satoru- No, you can’t say that,” he said while Yu rewrapped his arms around his partner, ready to give him more comfort

“Huh?? But Nanamin’s a guy, so wouldn’t that mean he’s transitioning to be female??” Gojo asked. Everyone in the room stared at the white-haired sorcerer with varying expressions. Getou still looked mortified while Nanami just looked incredibly annoyed

“No, you idiot,” he huffed, “I was born female, and am transitioning to be male”

It took Gojo a moment to register what had been said, and his eyes widened. “Oh!! Oh fuck, I’m so sorry, Nanamin. I genuinely didn’t realize. Wow I feel dumb”

“You are” Nanami rolled his eyes, and Yu couldn’t help but chuckle softly. “It just means that you’re already passing pretty well,” he smiled. “I’d take that as a win”

Nanami sighed heavily, but he had to admit that the brunette was right. “Baring Satoru’s reaction,” Getou began, though Gojo interrupted with another apology. “We’re really honored that you trust us enough to tell us.” The raven-haired sorcerer finished, “You’re not… upset or mad??” Nanami asked

“No, of course not,” Getou replied. “I can only imagine how difficult it must’ve been to do this, especially after whatever it was you saw yesterday”

“What Suguru said,” Gojo agreed. “There was never a chance that we wouldn’t understand or be supportive”

Nanami visibly relaxed, and Yu sensed his cursed energy returning to normal. He smiled, kissing his partner on his cheek, “You did it, Kento. I think the curse is gone”

“Thank god…” he sighed with relief, and Gojo again raised his shades to check. “Yep, can confirm. Your cursed energy is already shifting back to normal”

“That’s a relief,” Getou sighed. “I’m glad we were able to put an end to that. It also means that your evaluation is complete”

“Really??” Yu asked “So does that mean we pass??”

“You probably, I dunno about me,” Nanami sighed

“I’d beg to differ,” Getou answered. “After all, you’re the one who broke free from that unregistered curse. And with Yu cleaning up the Sanatorium, that means all of the curses from the exam itself have been exercised”

“I’d call it a pass,” Gojo added with a smile. “We’ll make sure the higher-ups get the note, and before you know it, you two will officially be grade-one sorcerers”

Nanami was a bit skeptical about his senior’s ability to get the correct paperwork finished in a timely manner, but one look at Yu and the sparkle in his eyes had him forgetting all of his anxiety. He knew how long the brunette had been waiting for this and was just glad to be able to achieve this with him before they graduated. Not only that, but he’d successfully come out to their seniors.
