Summary
Simon Riley did his best to avoid feelings. He filled his nights with drinking and meaningless sex, too busy for something committal. Not that he could ever be committed to someone; he found those types of relationships were too confining. Any relationship was suffocating, romantic or not. He spent most of his time working, going on months-long missions, and poring over paperwork. Work associates did their best to avoid him, save for a few who put in the effort to see past the grump that Simon was.
But when Simon gets injured in the field and is sent back home to Manchester, he can't help but notice his new single-mother neighbor, living in the house buddying up to his. At first, her positive attitude and bright smile irritated him to no end, like most people do. They butt heads nearly every day, bickering and disagreeing at every turn. He hates how much he looks forward to poking at her; their interactions become a game. He hates how his stomach tightens whenever he sees her. And most of all, he hates how he starts to not hate her, not even a little bit. Not even at all.
