Operation Kaisagi

Summary:

Rin can’t handle it anymore. His otp is moving too slow so he decides to take matters into his own hands

Work Text:

Rin doesn’t care about romance. He’s said it so many times that he almost believes it himself.

But watching Isagi and Kaiser, arguing one minute, syncing perfectly on the field the next, brushing shoulders in hallways like it’s gravity instead of coincidence, something in Rin cracks.

It starts out as curiosity. Tactical. Clinical.

Then it becomes something else. A fixation.

He doesn’t even realize it until he’s several drafts deep into a document titled: “The Interpersonal Dynamics of Kaiser x Isagi: A Study in Rivalry-Based Affection.”

Rin also doesn’t believe in fate, but he does believe in planning.

So he writes a note.

Clear your schedule tomorrow and come to the west field gate at 3pm. Walk left toward the park. Look for the silver bench with a bag on it. There’s something you should see. Trust me.

 He doesn’t sign it.

He writes two copies. One goes under Isagi’s dorm door. The other, under Kaiser’s.

Then he waits.

The next day, Rin sits on a distant hill across from the park, binoculars pressed to his face, breathing through a plastic mustache that kept slipping off.

Disguised in sunglasses, a wide-brimmed fisherman’s hat, a trench coat (in July), and fake sideburns taped on with medical adhesive, he looked like the world’s worst spy. But Rin was too emotionally invested to care.

When Kaiser arrives first, Rin jots it down.

When Isagi shows up four minutes later, Rin underlines that twice.

They look at each other like they weren’t expecting the other to show. Then they both laugh a little. Then they follow the path Rin laid out.

It’s small things, really.

The way Isagi slows down until they’re walking in step.

The way Kaiser hands him a drink Rin left in the bag like it was his idea. The way Isagi actually takes it without suspicion.

Rin writes: “Shared rhythm established. Proximity: close. Smiling ration: Elevated. Confusion giving way to curiosity. Room for emotional growth present.

At the fountain, they sit.

Rin can’t hear what they’re saying. He isn’t that invasive. But he watches the way Kaiser leans in.

The way Isagi laughs and hides his mouth with his hand.

The way their knees almost touch and neither pulls away.

They stay there for a few minutes, talking, teasing and laughing, until it is time to leave. Kaiser, for the first time since Rin has known him, looks nervous as he grabs Isagi’s hand. Isagi is little shocked but his whole face turns red as he lets Kaiser drag him along to the next stop.

Rin tiptoed after them at a ten-meter distance, using a free-standing cardboard cutout of a ramen mascot to hide behind whenever they paused. Several pedestrians gave him concerned looks. He ignored them. They didn’t know the trails and hardships that came with being a hardcore shipper.

Next stop: a riverside park, the “sunset over water” clue.

A picnic blanket had already been laid out with a basket on top.

Kaiser raised a brow. “Okay, now it’s definitely premeditated. Who the hell—?”

Isagi looked uncertain. “Do we… sit?”

There were sandwiches. Drinks. Deserts. And a small note card: “Eat together. Talk. Stop being dumb and confess already

Kaiser cackled. “Wow. We’ve got a fan.”

Isagi flushed. “Who does something like this?”

Inside the picnic basket, there was a small laptop. Rin found it at a dump so he can use it for this specifically for this occasion. There was no way he was going to use his personal laptop which had over 5000 drafts for his future kiis fics.

When Kaiser opened the laptop, a slideshow started playing. Thanks to hiori, he was able to fill with over 100 pictures of them. Some where they were joking lightly. Some where they shared secret looks they thought the other didn’t notice. And even pics where it looked like they wanted to down right murder each other.

But in each pic, the tension between them was noticeable. Even just looking at it, anyone would think that there was something going on between them.

Isagi was breathless. “…Wow. This is all… Us. I don’t even remember some of these moments.”

“It’s also borderline stalking”

Isagi laughed at Kaiser. “Well yea but… don’t you think it’s kind of nice? That someone noticed us way before and planned this whole evening out? Did everyone notice this between us before we even did?”

“Before we? I’ve been tryna get with you since day 1! Didn’t you notice all the little hints I gave you” Kaiser said exasperated.

“Hints!? Oh you mean trying to murder me and break me apart on the field?” Isagi said.

Kaiser smirked. “Yea but you loved it”

Isagi opened his mouth to refute but closed it again. Kaiser was right after all…

Kaiser tossed a grape at Isagi’s face. “You’re not cute when you’re quiet. Curse me out.”

Isagi choked, swatted at him, laughed. “Shut up.”

“Make me.”

A beat of silence.

“I might,” Isagi said quietly, looking at him with flushed cheeks and reckless courage.

Rin’s hand shook, his nose started bleeds and he want to jump up and down He looked down right insane. “Yes. That’s it. That’s the tension. Kiss him, you cowards.”

A passing cyclist slowed down to stare at him. Rin ducked into the bush like a guilty raccoon.

He wiped sweat from his brow. The sun was setting, but the trench coat was not breathable. His sideburn tape was melting. His heart, however, was full of purpose.

After the picnic, another note card directed them to a rooftop garden nearby.

Isagi and Kaiser exchanged a glance but kept walking, curiosity outweighing suspicion.

Rin, meanwhile, was wheezing from exertion as he scaled the fire escape in his coat and floppy hat. His whole face was dripping with sweat and his tongue was sticking out. He was drooling now. Like he usually did when he was focused, in the zone, playing football. Shipping kiis was like a battle for him.

Hes never even trained this hard trying to beat Isagi or reach Sae.

The rooftop was strung with fairy lights. There was music. Soft jazz coming from a hidden Bluetooth speaker. The final note was taped to a lantern:

“The sky is clear, The timing is perfect. Just tell each other what you’ve been too scared to say.”

Isagi stared. Finally putting the pieces together, he whispered “I think this is Rin’s doing”

Kaiser blinked. “Rin?

“Yea. Hes the only one who does his I’s like this”

Behind a potted plant, Rin accidentally shuffled the leaves a bit froze like a deer in headlights.

“…Do we pretend we don’t see him?” Kaiser whispered, smiling.

Isagi bit his lip to keep from laughing. “Yeah. Let’s do the date part first.”

They stood under the lights.

Kaiser stepped closer. “You think Rin shipped us this hard the whole time?”

“I mean…” Isagi rubbed his neck. “We have been kinda… slow.”

“I was waiting on you,” Kaiser admitted. “Didn’t wanna ruin things if you weren’t sure.”

“I was sure. I just… got scared.”

Kaiser leaned in. “Still scared?”

Isagi smiled nervously. “A little.”

Kaiser kissed him anyway.

Under the lights, with soft jazz in the background, and a beet-red Rin choking on his own gasp twenty feet away.

Afterward, when they walked toward the fire escape, they paused next to the bush where Rin was definitely not hiding.

Kaiser called out, “Hey, Rin. Next time, maybe skip the wig.”

Rin bolted. His mustache flew off as he sprinted across the rooftop like a gremlin, his trench coat flapping.

Isagi laughed so hard he nearly collapsed.

Kaiser slung an arm over his shoulders.

“Wanna thank him with dinner sometime?”

Isagi grinned. “Only if we bring disguises too.”

That night, Rin updated his secret Kaisagi blog:

Operation Kaisagi Clear. Otp achieved. New goal: get them to hold hands in public.

Underneath, he attached a blurry photo he’d taken of the kiss, heart emojis edited in the corners.

He fell asleep smiling, dreaming of fairy lights and red strings and a world where people confessed when they should.
