Sirius Black was just recently disowned. Yes, it was more like he disowned himself, but nonetheless he was disowned and was left with no money from his wealthy family. As luck would have it, his best friend Remus Lupin was also poor. With no money and the boys having to share a flat (not that either one minded), they needed a job that would pay well.
