Chapter Text

“We’re out of beers, Joe.” Chandler said as he closed the fridge door.

“Go to Monica’s and see if she has some,” Joey replied, his eyes not leaving the TV. “Oh and it’ll be the perfect moment to make your move,” he added.

Chandler stared at the back of his chair, “what?”

“You know, she’s finally gotten over Richard.” Joey responded, turning to face him. “It’s time you finally make a move with the woman you've been in love with since forever!”

Chandler’s been crazily in love with his best friend ever since his old roommate, Kip, moved out. For the first six months when he first found out he was in love with Monica, he freaked out so much he was dangerously dehydrated.

However after four years of being in love with her, watching her go on dates with other guys. He’s gotten used to it, and accepted the fact that he will forever and always only be her best friend.

“Oh sure because I’m definitely a tall mustache guy Monica would like.” Chandler replied.

“Look Chandler, you’re not as bad as you think. But can you please go get me some beer, I’m thirsty.” Joey said as he turned his attention back to the TV.

Chandler rolled his eyes and headed across the hall.

Monica was lying on her couch, her head against the arm rest. Only the lamp by the couch was switched on and she was humming along the slow music playing from her mix tape.

She sat up when the door of her apartment swung open.

“Here for some beers.” Chandler explained as she returned to her previous position.

“Woah, is this a new way of looking through sperm donor papers with slow romantic music playing?” Chandler asked playfully as he bent down to reach two beers from the fridge.

“No, this is my way of escaping reality,” she replied. “I’ve given up on sperm donors.”

Chandler got up, placed the glass of beers on the kitchen table and headed over the couch.

“How come?” He asked, sitting beside her feet.

“I’ve realised how ridiculous it was, I mean I don’t even have a boyfriend yet.” Monica responded, with her eyes shut. “And I realised this is not the way I want to have a baby. I want a baby with a guy who wants one as well, and build a family with them. But I can’t even find a boyfriend who wants the same thing as me.”

“Sure you will, I mean you’re beautiful, kind, caring. Who wouldn’t want you?”

Monica opened her eyes and smiled, “Do you remember you’ve said something similar four years ago when you’re here for a beer as well.”

Of course he remembered. He remembered every moment with Monica, let alone that night. It was when Monica found out Phoebe moved out. Chandler went into her apartment for some beers and noticed Monica was upset. Chandler went over to comfort her and they ended up hugging each other for five minutes.

Although it was only five minutes, it felt like a dream to Chandler. Not because Monica was in a towel, although her petite body did feel nice against his. He would give anything to be around Monica Geller.

“Well it’s true, and once you’ve met him, he’s going to give you everything you deserve.” Chandler replied.

“Like what?” Monica scoffed.

“Uh well,” Chandler paused and got up. “On your first date he’s going to open the car door for you and bring you to a fancy restaurant.” He continued, “on your second date, he’s going to start falling in love with you. On your third date, he’s going to learn what a freak you are, but he won’t mind because he’s already in love with you.”

Monica rolled her eyes.

“And for your first valentine,” Chandler paused and reached out his hand for Monica.

“What are you doing?” Monica asked curiously but couldn’t help but smile.

“I’m building you a picture of your future man!” He replied as Monica placed her soft hand in his and he pulled her up.

“And for your first valentine,” he continued. “He’s going to bring you a bouquet of flowers and you two will dance around this living room.”

Chandler kept on going but Monica couldn’t help but laugh at how cute he is while babbling.

“And on your…” Chandler paused, suddenly realising that he’s swaying with Monica in her dimmed living room to the slow music playing in the background. His right hand still intertwined with her left hand, his other hand against Monica’s waist and hers wrapped around his neck.

“And on your anniversary” Chandler struggled to continue as Monica’s ocean blue eyes looked up at him. His heart started to pound faster and faster, he wondered if she could feel it with her body against his.

“You’re so beautiful.” Chandler whispered softly as that’s the only thing that would come out. Monica looked at him surprisingly and smiled back. Then they stopped swaying. Yet their bodies still intertwined with each other, and their eyes not leaving each other’s gaze.

Somewhere, the tape clicked off. But neither of them moved. Neither of them even noticed.

They had no idea how long they were in each other’s arms, but it felt like the world had paused.

“Uhm,” Rachel coughed that brought them back to reality. They saw Ross and Rachel standing in the doorway and quickly untangled themselves.

“What were you guys doing?” Ross asked accusingly, his arms around Rachel.

“I, uh, we uh-“ Monica stuttered while looking at the floor.

“I was teaching Monica some of my dance moves I learnt in my dance class!” Chandler blurted briskly.

“Since when did you take dance classes?” Rachel asked.

“Since today!” Chandler exclaimed.

“Yes! Boy those were some pretty challenging moves.” Monica responded.

“Yea you're way out of time, you’re a pretty bad dancer Mon.”

Before Monica could give a reaction, he walked towards the kitchen table to retrieve the two beers and headed out.

“Good night!” He added and went into his apartment.

As soon as he entered, he placed the beers on the kitchen counter and put his hands on his face.

What was all that! Telling Monica she looks beautiful? Chandler Bing, what the hell!

“Oh hey you’re back.” Joey said casually as he got up and headed for the glass of beer. “What happened?” Joey said as soon as he saw Chandler.

“Well, I think- I think! Monica might now know I’m in love with her.”

Joey froze mid-sip, lowering his beer. “Wait what? How did that happen?”

“Well I may have just slow-danced with her, then told her out of nowhere ‘You’re so beautiful’ like some kind of rom-com lead who doesn’t understand personal boundaries.”

Joey’s eyes widened. “Dude!”

“Oh and yea, Ross and Rachel walked in so naturally I told them I was teaching her dance moves from a class I just started today. Because right, that's totally believable!” Chandler yelled hopelessly.

“Dude I told you to tell her how you feel, not to be her lover.”

Chandler gave him a ‘not helping Joe’ look and headed to his bedroom.

“Well I call that a night.” He called and disappeared into his bedroom.

If only I could be her future man...
