Care Closet

Summary:

Nick is a school teacher and this is a few moments in his classroom, and at home, as he embraces a child coming into themselves.

This is a continuation in Jett's Birds of a Feather Universe, or at least the spin-off that I created when I wrote Playground Antics and introduced Veronica and Flick.

Notes:

Happiest of Happy birthdays, dearest Jett! I couldn't resist giving Flick a little more space to grow into their identity, and have a breakthrough. This started as one drabble and then Flick and Veronica both had words they wanted to say and now it's a triple-drabble, just for you. Have the most wonderful day, love!

Work Text:

“Mr. Nelson!”

“Veronica, why are you yelling, we’re indoors, are you alright?”

“Yes, I’m fine. Flick isn’t!”

“What’s wrong with Flick?”

“They won’t come out of the loos, they don’t feel comfortable.”

“Oh. Let me see what I can scrounge up, wait there and you can take something to them.”

Nick walked to the corner of the classroom, it was slim pickings, but he had a feeling even these oversized gym shorts were going to be better than what their mum had insisted on.

“Veronica, can you take these to Flick?”

🩳

“How was your day, darling?”

“Complicated.”

“Say more, hun?”

“I need to see if we can find a few more bits we can keep in the classroom for them to change into. Not sure their mum is quite ready to let go.”

“We can do that. It’s an adjustment for Mum.”

“She just keeps insisting on sending them to school in skirts. It’s like she thinks if she pushes the clothes Flick will just change their mind or see sense.”

“I know it’s frustrating, babe. I think a care closet is a great idea. Shall we go shopping this weekend?”

 🩳SOME TIME LATER🩳

“Mr. Nelson, Mr. Nelson!”

“What is it, Flick?”

“My mum! She used my name, she called me Flick!”

“That’s great! Did you do what we talked about?”

“I did. I gave her a huge hug and told her what it meant to me and …”

“You can tell me.”

“She’s going to take me, to get my hair cut again. Maybe that’s just because she doesn’t want Veronica to do it in the playground again, but she’s still going to do it.”

“How do you feel, little one?”

“I’m made up, I wasn’t sure she would ever…”

“This is great!”
