Wardrobe Problems

Summary:

The plan was to change HUNTR/X’s image to reflect everyone’s patterns, but they hadn’t yet found a good way to break the news to Bobby. So, until a solid plan was in place, they all agreed to hide their patterns whenever they went outside the house.

This is why today is their first time trying to go outside. Except every single outfit Mira or Zoey came up with had some flaw that caused Rumi to send them back and try again for one reason or another.

They were supposed to leave three hours ago.

Notes:

The start of many short one-shots about these three and I am READY. I had so many cute and fun ideas when I was working on Patterns Patterns. Though if you have any scenarios you want to see in this canon divergent world, let me know and I might write them!

Work Text:

Rumi, Mira, and Zoey spent most of last week discussing a wide range of topics, including but not limited to: repressed feelings, traumatic experiences, and Celine. Once Mira learned about what Celine told Rumi while growing up, it took both Rumi and Zoey working together to prevent their girlfriend from leaving to confront their mentor in a rather violent way. While Rumi was touched by the gesture, she begged Mira not to hurt Celine since Celine was still her guardian. A few kisses from Zoey calmed most of Mira’s anger, but Mira gave no promises the next time she saw Celine.

When they weren't having overdue talks, the trio slept together on the couch or in Rumi’s bed, which was the largest of the three. Mira was the first to fully recover from the final battle, with Zoey regaining her energy the next day. Rumi took another four days before she confidently said she was feeling back to normal. Once everyone felt at peak condition, they all knew what their first task was.

Get out of the penthouse.

They hadn’t left their home in over two weeks, and even Mira was eager to get out for a couple of hours. But there was a major problem.

Clothing.

Mira and Zoey struggled to find a coherent outfit that hid all their patterns.

Rumi sat on the couch, finishing her makeup and double-checking that her patterns were hidden. Despite numerous reassurances from Mira and Zoey that her patterns were beautiful and didn’t need to be concealed around them, Rumi felt a sense of irony as she sat there, ensuring they were hidden correctly.

Rumi heard her name called, causing her to look up from her compact. She saw Mira and Zoey standing side by side. Mira wore a black tank top, a matching black leather jacket, and dark blue ankle-length jeans. Zoey had a yellow cropped hoodie on with black baggy pants. Rumi looked the duo over and gestured for them to turn around, looking for any visible patterns. Eyes narrowed when she caught sight of the familiar dark maroon colored skin barely peeking through parts of their wardrobe. “Mira, you need concealer on the back of your neck and on your shoulders. Zoey either needs to put concealer on the lower part of your stomach or put a tank top on.”

"Wait, where!? I swore I didn’t see any patterns before I came out!” Mira protested as she looked over her outfit for what felt like the twentieth time today.

“If anyone is looking up my hoodie, I think we have bigger problems!” Zoey crossed her arms, pouting.

Rumi shook her head as she shut her compact. “I told you that wearing your training clothes would be the easiest.” Standing up from the couch, she walked over to where Mira and Zoey were. Starting with Mira, Rumi brushed some of her hair away and traced the pattern peeking out from underneath Mira’s shirt. “Your hair hid it, but you can see it as soon as you move around.”

“First HUNTR/X spotting since our supposed breakup, and you propose that we wear training clothes in public? Absolutely not," Mira replied, sounding offended that Rumi would suggest such a terrible idea. However, Mira’s anger eased when she felt the gentle touch of Rumi’s fingers tracing the patterns on her neck. “Alright, you win. What do you recommend?” A content smile appeared on Mira’s face, as she was incredibly weak to feeling someone tracing patterns on her skin.

Satisfaction sparkled in Rumi’s eyes at her victory. “Concealer for your neck today, since it’s only a small section and your hair is down. If you feel like getting concealer over your jacket, try putting some on; otherwise, switch to a t-shirt. If people catch you at the wrong angle, they can see some patterns. When we go out, you should buy a couple of turtlenecks to hold you over until we figure this out with Bobby.”  Rumi explained, as she readjusted Mira’s jacket ever so slightly, and the maroon patterns came into view to illustrate her point.

Mira let out a soft sigh, of course, Rumi would find the small imperfections in her choices. Despite that, Mira understood this was important. They were taking a big risk going out like this before talking to Bobby. However, Mira was desperate to get out of HUNTR/X Tower and into the city for a much-needed change of pace. “I’ll go put the shirt on then, I like this jacket.” Mira quickly kissed Rumi’s forehead before returning to her room.

With Mira taken care of, Rumi returned her attention to Zoey. “I know you are right, but people have cameras, babe. We will attract attention since we want to show the fans that we didn’t break up. Wind blowing simultaneously, someone snaps a picture of us, and all this work would be for nothing.” To further prove her point, Rumi barely tugs Zoey’s hoodie up, and the patterns on her side become visible. “Any color tank top would work, just to be safe.”

The wind wasn't something Zoey thought about when she chose her cropped hoodie—pressing a kiss to Rumi’s cheek before walking away. “If the master says so. I’ll go put on a tank top.”

Rumi was the expert when it came to covering up. Thanks to Celine, she had years of experience, so she knew how to spot any potential threats in her wardrobe. Her issue was exposing herself. Rumi kept covering all her patterns out of habit when they were at home. It took Mira and Zoey throwing tank tops, short-sleeved shirts, or tugging at her hoodie to remind her that she didn’t need to keep covering up. She was grateful that the other two were so patient with her and helped her get over her insecurities about her patterns.

Waiting for Mira and Zoey to fix their outfits, Rumi pulled her phone out and started mindlessly scrolling social media. The main thing on her feed was the drama surrounding the Saja Boys’ sudden disappearance and impromptu concert.

“Fixed it.” Mira called out, drawing Rumi’s attention. Mira had her hair held up, showing off her spotless neck.

Moments later, Zoey walked out sporting a black tank top underneath her hoodie. “Same.”

Nodding at them, Rumi pocketed her phone and walked over to her partners. “Alright, who’s ready to finally leave the house?”

“Finallllyyyy.”

“ME!”
