How to get a 'Girlfriend'

Summary:

Dogday has a crush on Catnap, so he finds a certain book that might help him get closer to his one true love.

Chapter 1: Booked

Chapter Text

It was a nice day in Smiling valley, and Dogday was over at Bubba’s house, looking around in his library, searching for a particular book.

For the last few weeks or so, he’d been crushing on his best friend, the one and only Catnap, and he was wanting to ask him out, but didn’t really know how to go about it.

Normally he’d go to Bobby for love advice, but unfortunately, she was out of town for a few weeks to visit her parents, and where they lived, there was really bad internet and phone reception, so there was no way to talk to her until she got back…
(I mean the whole pizzaplex is covered in electronic stuff so-)

So he decided to settle for the next-best option, looking for a book about romance.

As he looks through the RE section, Dogday reads the titles aloud quietly.

“Lets see, reptiles, reticules for telescopes, reindeer- aha!”
He says. “Relationships.”

After looking through the relationship section, he pulls out a random pink colored book, titled ‘How to get a girlfriend in 5 easy steps.’

Dogday shrugs. “Eh, seems good enough.”

Taking the book, he walks over to Bubba, who was studying a book about engineering.

“Hey Bubba, can I borrow this book?”
He says.

Bubba nods. “Of course,” he says. “What book is it?”

Dogday blushes a bit, showing him.

Bubba gets a sly look on his face.
“Oooh, looking for love, are we~?”

Dogday blushes more, covering his face with the book. “S-shut up!”

Bubba giggles. “Alright, well, try not to damage it or get it dirty, and bring it back when you’re done.”
He says.

Dogday nods, still blushing.
“Thanks Bubba.”

When he was walking out, he heard Bubba say, “Good luck with your dream girl!”

Dogday grumbles as he walks out, closing the door behind him.

~Cupid style transition~

When Dogday was home, he sat on his couch, flipping open the book and reading the first page aloud.

“Hello reader! If you are reading this right now, you are probably single and sad for one of two reasons.

A. You’ve just been broken up with, in which case, my condolences, you were too good for her anyway.
B. You’ve always been single and are too afraid to just go for it, in which case, I get it, romance can be scary, but also, MAN UP!”

Dogday rolls his eyes and continues reading.

“Either way, this easy 5 step guide will have the girl of your dreams in your arms or help you find rebound romance in no time!”

Dogday smiles at the thought of embracing Catnap in slow motion, turning the page.

“Step 1. Compliment her

If there’s one thing any girl wants, it’s to be told they are beautiful.
Mention all the things you love about her. Her eyes, her hair, and her smile are all great starting points. But make sure to AVOID mentioning anything about her body, especially her chest and/or behind, or you’ll seem like a creep.”

Dogday nods. “Noted.”

“If you’ve already known her for a while, why not compliment things about her personality that you like? Is she funny? Shy? Cheerful? Anything about her that makes your heart beat will get hers going too if you tell her in a romantic way.”

Dogday nods. “Alright, what’s step 2?”

He turns the page again.

“Step 2. Buy her nice things to show you care

Girls love getting gifts, the more expensive the better. Anything gold, silver, even bronze will really tickle her fancy.”

Dogday gets a bit nervous. “I don’t have a lot of money…”

He continues reading.
“If you’re on a budget, maybe try getting things you know she’ll like. If she’s a bookworm, she’ll love it if you get her a new book. If she’s creative, why not some new stationary or watercolor paints? If she’s cool, get her new sunglasses and heels. Gifts can really show a girl how much you understand her.”

Dogday thinks.
“Hmm, maybe I can get him a new blanket or pillow.” he says. “Something that will make his naps better.”

He looks back at the book. “Alright, next step.”

“Step 3. Spend time with her

In order to get your dream girl to fall in love with you, you gotta make sure to get the idea of you in her head.
And in order to do that, you should spend time with her.”

Dogday smiles. “Well, we already spend a lot of time together, so that should be easy.”

He continues reading.
“When you spend time together, make sure to ask her about the things that she likes. What are her favorite hobbies? What are her favorite books and movies? What’s her favorite food?

Knowing more about your crush, and in turn telling her about yourself, will help you to grow closer.”

Dogday giggles. “1. Sleeping, dancing and reading. 2. Goodnight moon and Maleficent. 3. Sushi, but especially spicy tuna roll.”
He answers. “Got that one covered.”

He continues reading.

“Step 4. Go in for the kiss”

Dogday blushes.
“Oh wow, that seems a bit sudden…”
He says aloud.

He keeps reading.
“So you and your crush have gotten to know each other pretty well, good.

But if you still feel like you’re in the friendzone, now’s the time to try something bold.

Make sure you’re alone, then kiss her, making sure to be gentle if it’s her first time.
It’ll be the one way to show her how you truly feel inside, and get her heart pumping as well.

Guaranteed to work 100% of the time.”

Dogday rolls his eyes.
“Well, I don’t know about that…”

He turns to the last page.

“Step 5. Ask her to be your girlfriend.

So, the moment of truth has finally arrived.
If you’ve completed all 4 of the last steps, now it’s time to make things official.

Hold both of her hands, look deeply into her eyes, and tell her how you feel.

Make sure to speak from your heart, and use your own words.
Girls don’t like love confessions that seem rehearsed or pre-planned.”

Dogday gets a bit nervous.

“Do your best to try not to stutter, or trip up, because that’ll make things awkward. But if you can’t avoid it, try to smoothly recover.
(Okay that might take a bit of practice.)

But, once she knows how you really feel, if you’ve completed all the steps before, then she’ll fall right into your arms!”

Dogday smiles at that thought.

“And there you have it.
The 5 simple steps to getting the girl of your dreams.

Some final notes:
If you want your girl to stay with you,

DO:
Be caring, supportive, loving, and make her feel like she’s the only girl in the world to you.

DON’T:
Be creepy, pervy, or try to pressure her into doing anything she doesn’t want to do.

DO:
Be attentive to her needs, help her if she’s upset, and she’ll (Hopefully) do the same for you!

DON’T:
Act cold and distant, especially when she doesn’t want to explicitly roleplay as your favorite villain.”

Dogday tilts his head. “Wow, who would even do that…?”

He turns to the final page, reading it.

“And overall, just make sure she knows how much you love her, each and every day.

Welp, that’s it.
Good luck, and may your love last forever.”

Dogday smiles as he closes the book, feeling a lot more confident after reading it.

He stands up, pointing into the air with a large, self-assured grin.

“my sweet Catnap, I will make you mine!”

Chapter 2: Getting a 'Girlfriend'

Chapter Text

It was a new day in Smiling valley, and Dogday woke up with a start.

After a quick breakfast of waffles with parmesan cheese and peanut butter on toast, Dogday walks out his front door, repeating the steps he’d read in the book in his head.

He takes a short trip to the city, going to the bedding store and getting Catnap a lovely plush blanket with stars and moons on it, and a moon-shaped neck pillow to match.
He already had like 17 bedding sets, but what’s one more in the name of love?

Then, he goes home and wraps them up in an orange box with a pretty purple ribbon.

“I hope he likes them…”
He says softly.

Then, when he finally made it to the park, his target was right there.

Catnap was sitting almost cinematically on the park fountain, looking at the clouds, with his fur ever so slightly drifting in the gentle September breeze.

Dogday blushes, taking a deep breath, and walking over.

“Hi Catnap!”
He says, getting his attention.

Catnap looks over, smiling at him.
‘Oh Hi Dogday.’ He signs. ‘How are you?’

Dogday smiles. “I’m doing good!’
He says. “How are you?”

Catnap scoots closer.
‘I’m doing okay.’ He says.
‘So what are you up to today?’

Dogday scoots closer as well.

‘Step 1, compliments.’
He repeats in his head.

“I was just taking note of how cute you are today!”
He says. “The sunlight plays off your beautiful lavender fur and sparkles like a million amethysts.”

Catnap blushes.
‘Woah, thanks Dogday.’ He says, smiling nervously. ‘That’s very flattering.’

Dogday giggles. “Well it’s true.”
He says. “You’re a gorgeous gem.”

Catnap smiles softly.
‘Thank you.’

‘Step 2.’
Dd thinks.

“So, I got you something!”
He says, pulling the wrapped box out from behind his back.

Catnap gasps.
“For me?” He says quietly, taking it. “Aww, you shouldn’t have.”

Dogday giggles, smiling hopefully as Catnap undoes the ribbon, then opens the box.

His eyes sparkle as he sees the blanket and pillow, feeling how soft they were.
“Aww, Dogday, these are so lovely.”
He says, smiling happily. “I’ll definitely use these as I sleep tonight,”

Dogday’s tail wags. “Glad you like them!”

He starts to repeat the steps again.
‘Alright, step 3 was to spend time together, and we’ve been doing that a lot already, so…’

He gets nervous, his heart speeding up and his face turning pink.

‘I guess now it's time for step 4…’

“Hey Catnap…?”

Catnap looks at him. “Hmm?”

Dogday takes a deep breath.

He gently takes Catnap’s face in his hands, causing him to blush.

“Uh, Dogday…?”
Catnap asks. “What are you do-MPH?!”

He was cut off by Dogday kissing him firmly on the lips.

Catnap was stunned for a moment, then slowly kissed back, gently putting his hands on Dogday’s back.

It was a beautiful moment, the two locked in a wonderful state of pure bliss.

When Dogday eventually pulls back, he smiles, gently taking Catnap’s hands.

It was time for the big question.

“Catnap…?”

He says, smiling softly.

“Y-yeah?”
Catnap says quietly, still blushing.

Dogday takes a deep breath, looking deeply into his eyes.

“Will you be my girlfriend…?”

Catnap just stared at him.

“Um…”

Dogday waited for Catnap’s answer…

…Then realized what he had asked.

“Oh shoot, I meant BOYFRIEND!”
He says, blushing. “Will you be my boyfriend!”

Catnap laughs. “Ha!”
He says. “Yeah I was confused for a second.”

Dogday looks down. “Sorry, Nappy, I mixed up my words!”
He says, embarrassed. “I meant to say boyfriend…”

Catnap smiles, and leans forward to kiss him on the cheek.
“Well, my answer is yes, I will.”

Dogday smiles, his tail wagging.
“Really?”

Catnap nods, smiling softly.
“Of course, sunshine.”

Dogday squees in joy, jumping forward and tackle-kissing him.

The two happily made out for a few minutes, before Catnap leaned his head on Dogday’s soft shoulder, purring softly.
“I adore you, sunshine.”

Dogday giggles, kissing Catnap softly on the head.
“And I you, moonbeam.”

As he held his new lover in his arms, Dogday was happy, and mentally thanked whoever the author of that book was, for helping him catch the moon.
