Ruler Of My Heart

Summary:

She wasn't where she was supposed to be in the Resting Grounds. She wound up somewhere else, somewhere nearby... and hearing her sing as a reward for finding her is always worth the search.

Or the Radiance is singing on her own time and Hollow listens to her before the two wind up dancing together lol
I like Sunspot

Notes:

Hey hey! I hope yall enjoy this silly little canon divergence thing post Void Given Focus! For context, the Radiance was given a mortal body and a chance to fix her mistakes, and this is early EARLY on into that journey where the only one giving her a genuine chance so far is Hollow.

Song used is specifically Amalee's cover of Ruler Of My Heart as I feel her voice captures how I hear the Radiance the best, so feel free to listen along with that cover going!

Work Text:

Where is she? It wasn't like her to simply vanish like this, for her to be nowhere near the graves that she so diligently tended to. Hollow had planned to speak with her the moment they had returned to the Resting Grounds, to discuss things further than they had left them... but she was nowhere to be seen. She wasn't in the Seer's old room resting, she wasn't taking a break by the stag station, the graves were unattended, even the lower path was empty of her usual place when she needed to be alone. Nowhere in sight... where could she have gone?

Surely not far, Hollow may have addressed her lies about being entirely powerless, but her display the other day proved she was far weaker than they had even known her. The loss of her ever boiling anger had weakened her considerably, that much was clear. Surely she wouldn't chance going anywhere far... and that left only one path. She wouldn't dare go into the city, and there was only one other path that would be easy for her to get to.

A familiar straight shot... past the long outdated grave of the Dreamers, and many others whom held great importance to the kingdom... all the way down to an almost timeless lake of the purest blue. And sure enough, she was there. Although, she wasn't resting like they had expected her to be. She was... dancing. It wasn't the first time she had gone off to dance, but it certainly was the first time they had seen her wander this far to do so... so they stayed put. They waited. They didn't wish to interrupt. And then she began to sing, and their breathing almost stopped. This... wasn't a song they knew. One she sang endlessly during their time together once she ran out. Her voice echoed through the cavern walls as she spun in place, the beauty of her voice only amplified as she continued. And then...

You can hide from the light

Turn your back on the sky

There's no sun like my star

See the world shining bright

Through the tears in your eyes

Such a fine work of art

Her voice... it was softer than before. Softer than they ever remembered it capable of being. It still held its commanding volume, something that she had long come to terms with of losing. But... she could soften it. She could soften it for a song, like she always wanted to do again after screaming at the world for so long... oh wow.

My savior, oh, what a beautiful soul

I don't believe you, you're a liar

Your darkness and mine

A storm I can't disobey

Come to take me away

Now those types of lyrics sounded familiar for her. A sort of defiance, yet affection of her own hidden in the hostility. A woven web of contradictions that felt so much like her, and it made their chest warm considerably as they watched on... she had gotten better at dancing in her time alone. She had learned so much about dancing without a partner now that she had a body to practice with in the waking world.

Ruler of my heart

Ruler of my heart

Ruler of my heart

Eternally beautiful

Their breath caught in their throat.

Ruler of my heart

Ruler of my heart

Ruler of my heart

Her dancing slowed, her steps abandoning the shore and instead stepping into the shallows of the lake in front of her. While their initial panicked reaction made them almost react instantly, they stopped the moment she didn't go too far down the rapids... interesting. Seemed she just wanted to dance in the water. A shame, the sound would drown out her si- oh. Oooooh. Had this been how she was hiding her practice when she wasn't proud of something just yet? They didn't have time to think about it, she was already singing more.

The endless walls you're building

They fall to the ground

In a single moment crashing down

She leaned forward into the water, and when she splashed the water up and around her Hollow felt as if they had lost any ability to breathe they had left.

I could go blind and deaf

Til I have nothing left

Collapsing my world

Her shoulders tensed just slightly, almost in familiarity. They noticed, and held their stance as still as they could. They didn't want her to stop, and surely she would if she noticed them watching her. They wanted to hear more of her singing... to hear more of her voice like this. In a way they hadn't in so long. Thankfully, they got their wish. She kept going.

My savior, there is no beauty like yours

Make me your God, I can give you everything

She turned, a knowing smile on her face. She knew they were there. She wasn't stopping.

Your darkness and mine

She stepped forward to the shore, holding out her hand to them. They knew the gesture, an invitation to dance.

A storm I can't disobey

They should say no.

Let me take you away

They took her hand anyway. She pulled them into the water with her, and even though they towered over her like this... she lead the way. Just as she always did.

Ruler of my heart

Ruler of my heart

Ruler of my heart

Eternally beautiful

They certainly grew breathless that time, with how intensely she was staring at them.

Ruler of my heart

Ruler of my heart

Ruler of my heart

They weren't sure how much of this instance was staying in the waking world, and how much was beginning to weave into the weak daydreams she was capable of crafting together. And in the moment, they didn't care. They just wanted to dance with her, to fall into a rhythm they had missed for so long since the two were separated... since she was abruptly ripped from their chest with little explanation.

She was humming again, her voice echoing off the walls. And while the way the two of them danced in the water would keep most bugs from hearing her beautiful voice, it was enough for Hollow to feel it reverberating through their shell. It was so... strong. So beautiful, so ethereal, so her in every sense of the word. No wonder her voice could compel so many once they heard it.

Ruler of my heart

Ruler of my heart

Ruler of my heart

Their dancing slowed, their hand moving to her waist as her hands went to the sides of her mask. A familiar warm touch they had begun to get used to now that she was here... now that they were visiting her, the initial distrust and apprehension faded just enough to allow her this close.

Ruler of my heart

Ruler of my heart

Ruler of my heart

She had them. She had them in that moment, and yet she did nothing more than pull them close to rest their mask against her face. A quiet moment... a song ended, a dance come to a close... a tranquil moment for many others, they would assume. But for them? Their heart was beating so fast, they could barely breathe. If anything, they were more confused on what they were supposed to do than ever.

But then again, when was anything simple with the Radiance?
