Chapter 1: wait...you're not Adrien

Chapter Text

In hindsight, it made sense that Kagami and Adrien decided to break up. With Kagami finally standing up to her mother, and Adrien unwilling to string her on, they’d shook on it after their last (and somehow only second) date, and called it a day.

And of course Marinette was happy her two friends had managed to end things so amicably, but maybe she was slightly more glad that Adrien was back on the market. She had to let him know how she felt. Now. She got lucky that Kagami and Adrien didnt last (did it make her a bad person to be glad her friends broke up?), but there was no way she was risking losing him to someone else again.

And one girls sleepover later, that left her here; Outside the gym on a Wednesday afternoon, holding a note behind her back, watching the fencers from behind the doorway.

She had one singular foolproof mission today, a plan she and the girls had spent all week on, one that was certain to work.

If she couldn’t get her words out around Adrien, she’d just have to write it down instead. It was genius! Foolproof even-

“-and thats it for today, don't forget to sign up for the tournament next month-“

The coach’s dismissal shocked her out of her thoughts, and she rushed into position, stealing a quick glance at Alya, who'd masterfully hid in the bushes. She flashed her a nervous smile, which the girl met with a grin and two exaggerated thumbs up, before crouching back down out of sight.

She closed her eyes, clenched her fists, and took a deep breath. It was now or never.

The fencers started walking out, and overtook by a moment of courage, she ran out to them, holding out her note to Adrien as he left the room.

He stopped in his tracks, slightly taken aback, silently watching the note as she rambled “just wanted- ask about- date- this time- like you- if you want- ” Marinette kept floundering, tripping over her words, feeling her face heat up, and gosh she couldn't do this, what if he hated her forever and filed a restraining order and-

He took the letter from her hand, looking it once over, and Marinette held her breath, waiting in baited silence for his reaction. Giving her a curt nod, he took off his mask and Kagami looked back at her. Huh?

She turned immediately to look at Alya for any assistance, just to see the same look of confusion reflected on her face, so she could do nothing but stare in horror as Kagami read the love note. Damn it, how was she going to explain this one? She didn't want Kagami to think Marinette was trying to steal Adrien right from under her nose, and with the tension of their recent breakup as well? Would she think of her as a traitor? Would this destroy their friendship?

“Marinette...”, she paused her spiral for a moment, looking at her instead,”About this …note. I had not realised you felt this way. Uh…thank you I suppose.” she turned to leave for a second, before turning back again “and I will see you on Saturday? I will pick you up from your house if that's acceptable? I look forward to our date!” She wasnt mad? Hell she even seemed happy. That was….unexpected? Wait did she say-?

Now that she thought back to it, she supposed she hadn't really included any identifying details in the note, and considering she was going to hand it to Adrien herself, she felt a ‘Dear Adrien’ tacky, and… oh god, Kagami thought the note was to her….and she’d accepted her date?

Marinette stood frozen as Kagami gave her a small smile and went to the changing rooms to change back, and Alya walked over dumbfounded.

“girl what just happened?”

“...i dont know”

“Did you just ask Kagami on a date?”

“...i think so”

“...this is impossible. How did you even manage that? ...” Alya seemed even more exasperated than her, which was slightly unfair if you asked her.

Marinette was sure she looked as shell shocked as she felt.

“I’ll have to go. I can’t stand her up, she's one of my best friends” Kagami was a lovely girl, but she was a lot like Adrien, in that she had few friends. Marinette was honoured to be one of them. The same honour that was going to make sure she saw this date through.

And how different could it be to their normal hangouts? Between shopping for new clothes (Kagami, you cant just let your maid shop for you!), and ticking off experiences from their teenage bucket lists, they’d visited half of Paris by now. Surely this ‘date’ wouldnt be any different right?

“Youre on your own, girl,”Alya started, ”like why do we even try? This is impossible! it's like the universe is conspiring-....” She kept talking but Marinette had stopped listening. She’d gone through all stages of grief and settled on acceptance, she decided.

So she barely moved as Kagami gave her a hug before entering her car, flashing a small smile and an excited wave before taking off. She barely spoke as she went home, answering her parents questions about her day with non committal grunts. She barely noticed Tikki's excited squeals as she asked about what she’d wear to her newly and unexpectedly acquired date. and she barely slept as she laid staring at the ceiling all night, noting how the universe really did work in mysterious ways.

She was going on a date with Kagami. huh. Just how had she managed to do that?
