Summary
In the 1990s, Gussie was a famous folk musician; she’s retired now and living in deep rural Appalachia, on her family’s ancestral land, off the dwindling income streams of her past successes.
Haunted throughout her life by strange dreams, flickers of memory, and deep-rooted feelings she can’t explain, one day while renovating her family's old homestead bathroom Gussie finds a very old diary that her mother’s mother—a homespun feminist folk witch and lifelong decrier of Christianity—left hidden inside the wall.
Inside, Gussie finds the fragmented story of her distant ancestor, a young Puritan woman stranded on her family's isolated homestead in 1632 Massachusetts.
The more Gussie reads, the more familiar the story becomes—until she’s not sure where Mehitabel’s life ends and where hers begins.
