The Morning After

Summary:

After last night's "celebrations", there was an important task Thancred needed to see through.

He really should have known nothing is ever really a secret for long, especially towards a fellow Scion...

Notes:

Hi hello, been a little while. Life has been life-ing.

This is one of my little weekly shorts that I liked, so I cleaned it up a bit. I always had this running trait in my head that Y'shtola seems to just always know. She doesn't interfere but always knows. Anyway, if you're wondering about timelines, I would say this is a little bit before that last chapter of Bound by Fate but kinda running alongside the beginning of that chapter.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

After securing the table needed for the morning, he makes his way back into the Pendants. He takes in the silence that the early morning brings. Especially now.

As this was a morning truly free from the threat of Light consuming the land.

He knew there was much work to be done for the First and to them as well, now that said threat was dealt with. For now, though, they can all relish in the respite of the morning.

“I did not think I would see you so early this morning.”

His attention was focused on the familiar woman’s voice. There, at one of the side tables, was Y’shtola, a cup of morning tea in hand. They stared at each other for what seemed like hours. Her eyes narrowed in a scrutinizing stare. His hand idly went to the side of his neck, where the collar of his coat usually covered. Not even his Archon marks or his neckband could completely hide the kiss marks.

It was only fair after leaving so many kiss marks on his partner last night.

Somehow, he knows that Y’shtola knew.

With a careful sip from her cup, her expression turns sharp.

“I trust you, Thancred,” she began, “I would not speak to you so plainly if I did not. Ami admires you quite a lot. Has admired you for quite a long time. Only recently has she embraced her heart and what it yearns for. For her sake, whatever you decide, be direct and clear on how you feel towards her.”

Thancred knew of this all too well. Despite the directness, he knew the clear concern Y’shtola had for Ami and her emotions. Seemingly the first to pick up on it, even before Ami realized it herself. Normally, he would tease about treating their friend like a younger sister, had he not seen firsthand how detrimental such concealment was to Ami’s self-confidence in these matters.

And he still vividly remembers the “advice” she gave him during their time in Ishgard.

“I understand fully,” he said, “But rest assured I do not intend to do such a disservice to Ami. I was on my way back to offer her breakfast so we can talk.”

“Right, of course. I’ll leave you to your errand then.”

He quickly noted the relief in her voice.

With a nod, he continues on his walk back to the lodgings. He regretted leaving Ami while she slept. But he thinks she would appreciate the gesture of a morning meal as forgiveness. As he opened the door back to her room, he paused.

In the rays of the morning sun, Ami is clad in his coat.

Though it was a loose fit, it looked good on her frame. White looked good on her person. A rare sight indeed to see her in these moments.

A sight, he admits, he wouldn’t mind being a witness to more.

“If you wanted to be wrapped in me once more, you only needed to ask.”

Notes:

I totally headcanon Y'shtola knew Thancred slept with Ami because she smelled Ami's perfume lingering on him loooool.

Anyway if you feel inclined, feel free to leave a comment/kudos. Even if you decide not to, thanks for spending your time reading my works. If no one else tells you, I appreciate you 💙
