    Bette Porter didn't believe in fairy tales.

    Every recalled memory felt like a mocking echo, reminding her how easily she’d fallen for a storybook ending. Of all the certainties she’d held onto: career, friends, her carefully compartmentalised heart, romance was the one she thought she’d mastered. And yet she’d allowed herself to dream, to believe in something fragile and rare. Now that dream was gone, and she was once again reminded that romance was for the movies, not for her. Yet, here she was, clutching her knees to her chest with a head full of “what ifs.”
