Work Text:
He had been planning it for weeks now.
Aziraphale and Crowley had set into a routine where they barely went outside to dinner or lunch since moving into the cottage. This wasn't bad at all, because, in fact, they would spend those times rather inside giggling with each other over a silly thing they did while eating or watching a movie or show in the living room.
And Aziraphale likes it that way. And he had been planning to make Crowley a little surprise. In said times where they would just stay in, the demon would usually cook if the food they were eating wasn't ordered and delivered to their doorstep. He had gotten incredibly good at it, as he preferred to center in making a thing for the angel to enjoy rather than to eat himself.
It wasn't strange. The demon had never been much of one to indulge in the habit of eating, and Aziraphale had noticed that from long ago. Maybe he would order himself a small something sometimes when the dinner they were planning on eating wasn't made by him, but a really small thing.
However, Aziraphale had noticed something changed in his habit since moving into the cottage. Since Crowley had now himself a full on garden and greenhouse to experiment with, he had started to plant fruit.
He would usually and frequently catch the demon snacking on small fruit pieces while doing stuff. Watching something, organising for the eighteenth time his god forsaken record collection that Aziraphale was surprised to discover scattered around through different boxes when they moved in...
It was something that made Aziraphale giggle. He liked the new habit, as it made Crowley just look silly eating small, perfectly cut apple slices while placing Queen's 'Hot Space' in the middle of a bunch of more records.
So Aziraphale had thought of making the demon a little surprise. He had been secretly saving some of the apples the demon had been collecting from one of his trees to make something out of it.
He had given it a bit of thought for a few days, not really getting an idea of what to make out of them for the demon. Until he did actually get one.
Caramel apples. It was a simple, yet sweet little surprise, wasn't it? It was what the demon would usually eat except for a little sweet touch to upgrade his everyday healthy snack into something not so healthy just for once. And Crowley would like it, wouldn't he?
The angel smiled as he got up from his armchair and made his way to the kitchen, pulling the apples outside of the spot where he had been hiding them from said demon. He could take advantage that Crowley wasn't at home currently to make his experiment.
The plan was the following: cut the apples into the small slices Crowley would usually snack on, bury them into a soft layer of caramel and let them freeze until dinner so he could surprise the demon with them. Happy demon, happy life. Aziraphale giggled at that one on his head.
He started slicing the apples carefully, trying to make them look as perfect as possible. He also placed a pan on the stove gently and waited until it was hot enough to add the sugar and melt it into what would be the star of the experiment. Everything seemed to go perfect.

Until it started slowly falling down. Maybe it was the angel's nervousness about what Crowley would think of the whole thing that made it all go slightly down, but things started to fall. Or maybe it was more the fact that Aziraphale was more used to enjoy the food rather than cook it, and he hadn't stopped to think about that.
First, as he was trying to cut the apple slices perfectly, he had a bit more than a few fails. Half of the slices came out looking weirdly chunky. He knew Crowley wouldn't care about that, but it made him be pissed slightly off with himself.
Then, after almost cutting himself with the knife while cutting the apples, he burned himself a CONSIDERABLE amount with the boiling sugar. A quarter of his palm, actually. The angel jumped as his hand came to touch with the hot caramel, instantly dropping the slice and the fork he was holding it with into the ground. He sighed.
It might have seemed a bit silly, but the fact that every little mistake he had made had been building up inside him, made the angel want to just stop right there and hide himself from the world ashamedly. It was literally just caramel apples. They weren't that hard to make, were they? Yet he had managed to ruin that.
He let out a long shaky breath and rested his arms against the countertops, burying his face in them. There was no way to fix it now. The apples had been cut like crap, the caramel had started to freeze as the angel's mood dropped and Crowley would just think he couldn't even do some simple task like caramel apples.
He stared at the few chunky little slices he had managed to submerge slightly properly in the caramel in their own plate, and sighed once again. He heard a noise coming from the front door.
"Angel, I'm homeeee. I got some-" Crowley interrupted himself over the sight of Aziraphale, tiredness and sadness filling his eyes as he leaned on the countertops in front of a mess of apple crust and spilled sugar.
"Hey, dear." Aziraphale tried to get out with the most of his strength, but it came out in a broken, quiet tone.
"What happened, angel? What's up?" Crowley said, ignoring the mess that was the kitchen as he automatically let the bag he was holding in the table and reached for Aziraphale's face.
"I kinda tried making you a little something. I couldn't even do that, turns out." The angel said, his voice breaking slowly. Crowley felt this as if it was a bullet into his chest, immediately reaching for Aziraphale's head and laying it on his own shoulder.
"Hey, don't ever ssssay that." The demon hissed, resting his nose on the top of Aziraphale's head as he wrapped his arms, still on his black coat from being outside, around Aziraphale.
"What went wrong?"
"I tried making you caramel apple slices. Because I've noticed that you have started to snack on them often and I wanted to try to give it a sweet touch. But I cut them badly. And I burned myself with the boiling candy." Aziraphale muttered with a small sob, wrapping his arms around Crowley tightly.
Crowley ran a hand through the angel's hair, bringing his own down to Aziraphale's. "Which one?" He whispered. Aziraphale lifted his left hand towards the demon's, letting him grab it gently. It wasn't as burning as a fresh burn, but it had left a red, big scar behind as it seemed like the angel had tried to do some healing on himself but failed.
Crowley brought the hand to his face gently, giving it a small kiss. "Oh, Aziraphale..." He whispered, stroking his hand. "Did you have any more accidents?" He muttered.
Aziraphale shook his head. "N-No, but I didn't even manage to make the slices come out properly." He said, looking down. Crowley glanced for a second at the plate between all the mess that their kitchen currently was.
"They look pretty good to me, if you ask." He said, letting go of Aziraphale and grabbing the plate gently. He took one of the slices and miracled it so it was a bit colder, before giving it a small bite.
It tasted good. Sweetly good. It didn't taste like those factory caramel apples where the caramel tasted like plastic and you could barely bite into it. Aziraphale's one had a soft, thin sweet layer instead, making it easy to eat and the overly chunky cut of the Aziraphale tries to prepare a little surprise for Crowley but his mood falls when things don't go the way he wants them to. Happy ending included. (re-upload from my old deleted account!!) Notes: I'm writing like in autopilot, what is THISSSSSS. I'm proud of myself for getting over 1000 words, that's sick to me. ~ bentleysradio on twt ~ (Also, yes, if you didn't notice the apples are an obvious reference to the forbidden fruit.) Plus, the flavour of freshly grown apples only helped. "Angel, this is fantastic. What do you mean you fucked it up?" He said, taking another bite from the slice and taking another one and making it slightly colder as well by miracle to offer to Aziraphale. Aziraphale's face softened a little as he grabbed the slice and took a careful bite out of it. Crowley smiled and kissed his forehead, looking into the angel's eyes. "Don't bother yourself, angel. These are amazing. Just like you, alright?" He said. Aziraphale smiled and took another bite, giving the demon a small kiss after. "Now let me get you some bandages and cream for the burn, angel. Also, check in the bag that's in the table. I got us some sushi but it may be cooold noooow." Crowley winked and smiled, saying it as he made his way upstairs. Aziraphale smiled. Maybe things don't always turn out the way you want them too... But, something would always save them. Something or someone. Or both.
