   Summary

   In the early 1900s, Japanese women would be sent to Hawai'i in arranged marriages to work on sugar cane plantations. Because they would be set up with their husbands by photo only, they were called "picture brides." Mariko is one of those brides, stuck in an unhappy arrangement.
