Paint Me Yours

Summary:

The team helps JJ paint some rooms in her house. Little do they know that everything will change between two agents on the team, due to a paint war.

Work Text:

JJ’s Study — Late Afternoon
The paint war had started with a flick.
Just one innocent streak of blue across JJ’s collarbone — courtesy of Emily’s roller, delivered with a smirk and a shrug.
JJ had stared at her for a beat, wide-eyed in mock betrayal.
“You did not just do that.”
Emily just raised a brow, playful. “Do what?”
And then JJ, without a word, dipped her fingers into the tray and flicked a generous glob across Emily’s chest. From there, it was chaos.
Paint splashed across bare arms and cheeks, giggles echoing like they hadn’t sounded in JJ’s home in months. Their laughter was light, real — the kind that tugged at ribs and made everything else fall away.
Blue streaks covered their clothes, their faces, the tarp-covered floor. Emily was laughing so hard she could barely breathe.
And that’s when JJ tackled her.
It wasn’t aggressive — it was full of adrenaline and joy, like she couldn’t help it. She just needed to touch her. To be close.
Emily let out a surprised yelp as she hit the ground, back landing in a soft puddle of blue paint, tarp rustling beneath her. JJ landed on top of her, knees bracketing Emily’s hips, hands pinning her wrists gently but firmly above her head.
And then—
Everything went still.
The laughter died down like someone had turned the volume knob off life itself.
Emily blinked up at her, paint-splattered, breathless. Her heart was hammering — not from the play-fighting, but from this. JJ’s weight above her. JJ’s hands around her wrists. JJ’s eyes locked onto hers with a gaze so focused, so soft, it nearly unraveled her.
They were pressed so close. JJ’s nose just brushed hers, breath ghosting over her lips. Emily could feel the rapid thud of JJ’s heartbeat against her own chest.
Neither of them spoke.
The shift in the air was palpable. Heavy with things they’d never said. Things they’d buried and stepped over and ignored — for years, maybe.
And now it was here.
All of it.
Between them.
Pressed chest to chest, breath to breath.
JJ swallowed, her voice barely above a whisper. “I… didn’t mean to fall on you.”
Emily gave a half-laugh, trying to lighten the moment. “You’re very clumsy for a trained agent.”
But her voice was trembling. Not with fear — with feeling.
JJ didn’t move.
Her gaze dipped to Emily’s mouth. She blinked slowly, her breath catching. “Emily…”
Emily’s chest tightened. She knew what was coming. She’d imagined it before — dreamed it — but now? Here? In the middle of blue paint and chaos?
JJ’s voice broke through her spiraling thoughts. Gentle. Honest.
“I’ve been in love with you for so long I don’t remember not being.”
Emily’s lips parted, air catching in her throat.
She wanted to answer — to say something witty, something brave — but she couldn’t speak.
So she lifted her head, just a fraction, eyes wide and open.
JJ moved first.
Her hand released Emily’s wrist and instead cradled her face — careful, reverent — like she’d been aching to touch her this way. Her thumb brushed a smear of blue from Emily’s cheek, and then—
She kissed her.
Not in the way she’d kissed others — not in flirtation, or hunger, or routine.
This kiss was different.
It was soft. Trembling. Filled with the kind of love that only comes after years of silence and grief and secret glances when no one’s looking. It was the kiss of someone who had held back for too long — and was terrified she might lose her chance again.
Emily whimpered softly into it — a sound that broke JJ’s heart and healed it all at once.
Her fingers clutched JJ’s shirt as the kiss deepened, not with intensity but with desperation — the need to be felt, known, seen.
Tears blurred behind Emily’s eyes, but she smiled into it anyway.
JJ finally pulled back, just an inch, her forehead resting gently against Emily’s.
“You okay?” she whispered, breath shaking.
Emily let out a small laugh, blinking up at her. “Are you kidding? I’ve waited years for that.”
JJ smiled, cheeks flushed, eyes shining.
“Me too,” she whispered, voice cracking slightly. “I just… I didn’t think I’d ever be ready. Not after everything. But you… You’re still here.”
Emily reached up, paint-smeared fingers tucking a strand of blonde hair behind JJ’s ear. “Always.”
JJ leaned down and kissed her again. Slower this time. Longer. Like a promise.
And just outside the study door…

The Hallway
Garcia was crouched beside the door, face in her hands, shoulders shaking in silent excitement.
“Oh my God,” she whispered, voice trembling. “They’re kissing. They're kissing.”
Tara peeked through the crack, breath held, eyes wide. “JJ’s on top.”
Luke winced. “We should not be here.”
“No. We absolutely should,” Garcia countered.
Tyler was filming absolutely nothing, camera angled at the floor, just recording the audio of the kiss. “For… archival purposes.”
Rossi, leaning against the wall like he’d been expecting this for a decade, swirled his wine.
“Well. Took ‘em long enough,” he said with a small smile.
Another soft gasp floated from the study.
Garcia squealed into Tara’s shoulder, her voice barely above a whisper. “This is better than any rom-com.”
Tara blinked at her. “You realise we’re profiling them in real-time like a bunch of teenage girls, right?”
“Shut up,” Garcia said. “Let me have this.”

JJ and Emily lay tangled on the tarp, arms wrapped around each other, surrounded by the mess of paint and laughter and every unspoken word that had ever lingered between them.
The sunlight caught the blue on their cheeks, making it glow like warpaint and forgiveness all at once.
Emily’s voice was soft as she whispered, “So… are you gonna kiss me every time I mess up your paint job?”
JJ laughed, the sound warm and unburdened.
“Absolutely,” she said, nose brushing hers. “You’re going to be covered in it.”
Emily sighed, leaning into her. “Good.”
And for the first time in a very long time, JJ let herself believe that maybe — just maybe — the house didn’t feel haunted anymore.
Maybe it finally felt like home.
