Chapter 1: Chapter One

Chapter Text

There’s this urban legend in the Hale Bestiary that claims one day a magnificent mage will come along and rule the woods and forests and bring an overwhelming peace to all of the creatures and beings that reside in Beacon Hills. It’s buried deep in the back of the book, like a hindsight someone didn’t take seriously the first time, but it’s still there.

Now, Stiles is smart enough to know that whatever ‘magnificent mage’ the book speaks of has likely long since passed as the entry was written toward the end of the 17th century but the accompanying illustration stuck in between the pages bears a striking resemblance to him, almost 300 years later.

“Do you think it means something?” Stiles flips through the pages of the book trying to find more information on the matter. He’s sitting in the back room at Deaton’s veterinarian office while Scott checks up on various animals, administering shots and medicines when necessary and taking away the pain and anxieties of numerous small anxious dogs who won’t let him get near them with the needle.

Scott shrugs, sparing him a glance as he looks over Tilly the golden retriever’s ear infection. “I mean, with everything else that goes on in this town, maybe? It might just mean that some dude missed out on his destiny or whatever.”

“Yeah,” Stiles mumbles, still flipping through the book. His eyebrows furrowed in deep concentration,  “maybe.”

A few minutes pass before Stiles speaks up again, “What if it is me? What if that Spark thing Deaton said that one time is more than that? What if I have real magic?”

Scott sighs, placing the otoscope down before gently lifting Tilly off the examination table. “I dunno man. I mean, you said yourself that the whole thing was written like hundreds of years ago. Besides, don’t you think if you had real magic we would know that by now?” He leaves the room to put Tilly back in her kennel.

Stiles lets out a deep breath of his own, “I guess, it’s just, it looks so much like me, you know?”

“Well,” Scott says, coming back in to wash his hands, “Deaton will be back in a few days, you can ask him about it then. Now, I’m about to bring in a dog who’s had explosive diarrhea for the past few days and unless you wanna help me do the fecal smears…” he trails off.

Stiles doesn’t need to be told anymore, already packing the bestiary into his bag. “Alright, I get it, kicking me out.”

Scott rolls his eyes, “You’re more than welcome to stay, but I know you gag at the sight of wet dog shit, so I thought I’d do the nice thing and offer you an out.”

Stiles gags, “gross.” He heads toward the back door about to push it open before he stops and turns, “Is there a meeting tonight?”

Scott nods, wiping his hands dry with a paper towel, “Yeah; my place, eight o’clock. Derek’s bringing like a whole bunch of pizza so don’t eat dinner.”

“Hell yeah, Hale!” Stiles fist pumps the air before heading out to his jeep, missing the way Scott fondly rolls his eyes and shakes his head.
