Chapter 1: Preface

Chapter Text

It was Pansy’s idea to go to the bar. She wanted to spend some time with her old friend from school, Draco. It was just meant to be a catchup between two good friends. She’s a lesbian, for Salazar’s sake, and she didn’t even like him like that. And he was married. He loved his wife.

But the alcohol had different ideas.

She had the baby nine months later, on the 7th of June, 2005. Pansy never told anyone who the father was, not even the father himself. She named her baby Seren Aster Parkinson.

Despite everything, she loved her child, and growing up in Pansy’s glamorous studio apartment in London, Pansy never went a day without telling Seren anything different.

Love couldn’t save her, though.

On a holiday in North Wales, disaster struck the small family. Seren was just four years old when it happened. A werewolf tore into the cottage they rented late in the night, biting Pansy’s child on the right side of her abdomen, leaving the little girl screaming on blood soaked sheets.

The wolf was caught soon after, but Pansy knew she couldn’t keep her werewolf daughter in London. So, ironically, they moved to Wales.

It was quiet, secluded, with a long coast and a fire that crackled in the heath of their sea-side house. Little Seren grew up running with their dog, Jesper, along the beach, reading books on the constant, listening to muggle music from a record player they had found in an old muggle shop.

Seren developed a love of rock music - any type, wore doc martins, and always had a book in hand. She loved to swim, and draw, sleep and write. Under Pansy’s instruction, she learnt the piano, and under her own love of music, acoustic, electric and even bass guitar. She also sings. Seren loves the rain, and iced coffee, and short nails covered in dark nail polish. She likes to ballroom dance, and won’t come out of her room without looking completely composed.

Growing up, Pansy thought her daughter naught me a Griffindoor, but as she neared eleven, it was clear she was a Slytherin. The way she uses sarcasm and dark humour, giving you withering looks over the tops of books, and dressing upon mood.

It wasn’t long before Pansy started to get worried.

Seren looked like Pansy, yes, the same short, stature, though Seren had a slightly more muscular frame due to her werewolf tendencies. She had her mother’s plump lips and proud cheekbones, the same button nose and crinkly eyelids. However. Seren was blonde. Golden, a mix of Pansy’s dark hair and her Father’s platinum. Her eyes were a deep blue, again, a mix of her Mother’s dark eyes and Father’s sky blue ones. She had slender hands, and some of her mannerisms - a role of the eyes, a wicked smirk, the inability to properly wake up before 10am, definitely did not come from her Mother.

This wasn’t the only thing, though.

Seren’s werewolf traits only got more apparent. Wandless magic and being able to draw from magic in highly populated magical places, wandless apparation, untraceable magic, an immunity to weak potions and alcohol, a great liking of rare red meat, extremely heightened senses, heightened strength, and emotional legilemency. Seren also has a lot of scars - though most are on her torso and upper limbs, she has a few she can’t hide so easily.

When Seren got her Hogwarts acceptance letter, they were not surprised. They went straight to diagon alley.

At first, Seren was unwilling to get a wand, as she liked her magic, and did not want it controlled. However, she quickly realised that her magic as a witch and as a werewolf were separate, and was even able to combine the two.

While in Diagon Alley, Seren sees a person around her age, being picked on by some older students. She knows what that feels like.

From where she stood, she drew magic from the air around her - it was thick with it, what with the amount of wizards milling around - and promptly made those boys piss themselves. They hurried away in shame.

Quickly, Seren went over to this kid, asking where their parents are and introducing herself.

“Um. Hi. My names Sage, and I’m with the Lily Evans foundation? I can’t find my guide though…”They answered, hair turning a light shade of red, somehow encompassing their embarrassment perfectly.

After this, Seren and Sage exchanged addresses, and decided to keep in touch, after finding they were in the same year.

Over the rest of the summer, they exchanged frequent letters, bonding over  a shared love of Queen and Bowie, and over the fact they are both queer. Seren recently had a bisexual crisis, and had known from a young age that their pronouns were she/they. Sage used all pronouns. Though some days favoured some over others. They don’t label themselves, mainly because they never know what really fits, and are just attracted to who they’re attracted to.

Sage is extremely kind and easy, with bright green eyes and ghost pale skin. They’re a metamorphus, and their hair changes colour upon their mood, which can be extremely embarrassing. They can be dense, but also exceeding out smart, and it becomes clear they’ll be in different houses from the start, but neither mind.

The last three days, Sage spends at Seren’s house, their Mum thinking it would be a good idea to spend time with ‘you know…… others like you.’

Sage quickly finds that Seren is a werewolf, and is scared at first, then soon after wants to see how quiet she can play the record player with Seren still being able to hear.

It becomes clear they’ll be best friends for a very long time, and, three days later, step through the barrier hand in hand, and onto Platform nine and three quarters.
